Dr. Constantino Economos

Constantino Economos, a scientist at the Brookhaven National Laboratory and former U.S. Marine, died Monday at the Hampton Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Southampton, N.Y. Dr Economos was 90 and passed away peacefully of natural causes.

He was born in New York City in 1930, in the shadows of the Polo Grounds. He graduated in 1947 from Brooklyn Technical High School. He subsequently graduated from Polytechnical Institute in 1958, summa cum laude, with a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering degree. In 1960 he was awarded a Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematics, and a Ph.D. as a Doctor of Philosophy in Aeronautics, also from NYU Polytechnical Institute.

He began his professional career at General Applied Science Laboratory under the Italian aeronautical genius, Dr. Antonio Ferri. Dr. Economos was fond of saying Dr. Ferri was as important to America during the Cold War as Wernher von Braun was to the U.S. space program. He had recalled how Applied Science Lab had figured out hypersonic travel in the early ’60s. However, the U.S. government at the time was more focused on the space program.

Dr. Economos also worked at Princeton University’s Combustible Labs, working on interior ballistics. In 1976 he joined Brookhaven Lab as a fluid dynamics engineer until his retirement in 1999. He held a “Q” clearance, the highest civilian clearance for accessing top secret information from the U.S. government.

He was a published scientist, having written numerous papers on a variety of topics involving “Hypersonic Wind Theories” and “Combustion Chemical Boundaries,” published in periodicals at both MIT and the AIAA.

Connie, as he was known to friends and family, was a passionate Giants Baseball fan, long after they left New York to play in San Francisco. He was always keen to enter any debate with anyone over Willie Mays being the best player of all time. He loved a good margarita, and anything on the planet that had anything to do with ducks (most notably Daffy and Donald). He also enjoyed a good laugh — which he always seemed to carry with him daily. He loved wearing his goofy “I’m a Rocket Scientist” tee-shirt (complete with a Flash Gordon Rocket) and trying to convince all the bartenders that he really was one. He took his first sky dive at the age of 70, and was a member of the over-70 ski club near his resort home in Liberty, N.Y.

Dr. Economos was a resident of Riverhead, N.Y., and was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth, and his son, Michael. He is survived by his wife Agnes, his brother, Stephen (Carol); stepdaughters Karen (Robert) Bocksel and Cathy (Michael) Caruccio; daughter-in-law Christine; six grandchildren, Richard, Emily, Rebecca, Brad, Nick and Lexi; and two great-grandchildren, Max and Milo.

A wake will be held Friday, Nov. 13, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead, followed by a Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Burial, with full military honors, will be at Calverton National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital (stjude.org) or Center for Therapeutic Riding of the East End (ctreeny.org).

This is a paid notice.

Joseph Conrad Bobinski

Joseph Conrad Bobinski died peacefully in his sleep at the Westhampton (N.Y.) Care Center on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020. He was 85 years old.

He was born Jan. 21, 1935, in Riverhead, N.Y., to Bronislaw Bobinski and Althea Ruszkowski. When he was 14 his parents purchased a farm in Yaphank, N.Y. and his family eventually relocated there, in 1949. In 1953 he graduated from Port Jefferson High School, where he played football and basketball. In addition to sports, Joseph also had a unique passion for flying, which led to him becoming a pilot and serving in the Civil Air Patrol on Long Island throughout the 1950s.

In 1962 he married the love of his life, Veronica Buchak, and they settled in Riverhead, N.Y., to raise a family. As his life was centered around various occupations in the agricultural community, Joseph would eventually accept a sales position at the Sears, Roebuck and Co. department store in Riverhead. He eventually worked his way up to the rank of store manager and would end up managing the Sears satellite store in Bridgehampton for over 20 years. To this date, no satellite store in the history of Sears, Roebuck and Co. has outperformed the store in Bridgehampton when it was under his management.

The work ethic that he always displayed was not only reflected at his place of employment but also at his home as well. Their residence on Newton Avenue in Riverhead was known to have one of the most meticulously manicured lawns in the neighborhood, with strict attention to detail. There was never a weed in any of the flower beds, the shrubs were pruned to immaculate perfection and the only color the lawn ever exhibited was green.

On his days off his farming roots would often lead him back to one of his favorite recreational pastimes, golf, where the green fairways and open spaces would resonate with his younger years on the farm. When he was not on the golf course, he was either cheering on the New York Yankees, criticizing the New York Jets or rooting for his two grandchildren at their youth hockey games.

Over the years his fascination with aviation was endless, second only to his love for his family. He will always be remembered as a caring and honorable man and with the warmest, most genuine smile you ever saw.

Joseph was predeceased by his siblings, Edith, of Highland, N.Y.; Theodora, of Southold, N.Y.; Bertha of Dover, Del.; Bruno, of Yaphank; and George, of Loveland, Ohio. He is survived by his wife, Veronica Bobinski (née Buchak) of Riverhead; his son Bernard Bobinski and daughter-in-law, Melinda (Suspenski) Bobinski, of Baiting Hollow, N.Y.; his son Christian Bobinski of Riverhead; and his two beloved grandchildren, Connor and Colson.

Mass and visitation services were held Nov. 16 at St. Isidore’s R.C. Church in Riverhead.

Memorial donations may be sent to the St. Isidore’s R.C. Church Food Pantry, 622 Pulaski St., Riverhead, NY 11901.

This is a paid notice.

Fred Moore Carter II

Dr. Fred Moore Carter II of Mattituck, N.Y., devoted husband to Martha Carter, cherished father to Fred M. Carter III and his wife, Chelsea, of Glenview, Ill., Sarah A. Carter of Detroit, Mich., and Matthew C. Carter of Royal Oak, Mich., passed unexpectedly on Nov. 19, 2020, at the age of 60.

Fred was a lifelong Long Islander. He was born April 9, 1960, in Mineola, the only child of Fred M. Carter Sr. and Mildred Carter (Cornell). He was raised in Garden City and attended Garden City High School. He graduated from Cornell University in 1982 with a double major in biology and physiology. He received his medical education from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. After earning his medical degree, Dr. Carter completed an internship in surgery at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital and a residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He went on to complete a fellowship in sports medicine at the Emory Orthopaedic and Spine Center as well as an orthopedic research fellowship at the George L. Schultz Laboratories for Orthopaedic Research. He would have liked more stories to be shared from those years, but there are too many to list.

In 1987 Fred married Martha Clarke in an intimate Lloyd Harbor ceremony hosted by Martha’s sister Ann and her husband, Chris. Fred began his career as an orthopedic surgeon on Long Island at South Shore Orthopedic Associates. During his time with South Shore, he made lifelong friends. In 2001, Fred and his family moved to the North Fork, where he established his practice, North Fork Orthopedic & Sports Medicine P.L.L.C., and the Carters established their lives.

The North Fork community is one Fred was proud to not only be a part of, but also to serve. His passions in life were his family and his profession, and he approached both with enthusiasm and a smile on his face. One will never know how he found the time to be both a devoted physician, an incredibly involved father and a loving husband. As a family, we are still convinced that he managed to find more than 24 hours in his days.

Fred will be remembered among many things as a master storyteller, a lifelong soccer coach and a fishing enthusiast. There was not a soccer game that went unwatched and unanalyzed or a summer that passed without taking his family out with Captain John on the Sundowner to fish.

Fred was proud of his three children, and was arguably most excited when they finally went to schools within the Power Five conferences (real) he could root for. Quickly thereafter, he established a tradition of flying the family once a year to each school, to watch a game and spend quality time with each other.

A private service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greenport, with the Rev. Garret Johnson officiating. The service will be live-streamed; a link for the virtual service can be found at horton-mathie.com (click on Dr. Fred Carter II and scroll down for live streaming). Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport assisted the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions are made to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital Operating Room Renovation Fund established in memory of Dr. Fred M. Carter II.

Donations may also be made to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital at 201 Manor Place, Greenport, NY 11944. Please include “ATTN: Linda Sweeney” on the recipient line and your name with a return address.

This is a paid notice.

Committed family man, business leader, and role model to generations Douglas Alan Smith Sr. passed away on Saturday, Nov. 28, at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, Fla., due to underlying complications of COVID-19. He was 87 years old.

Doug was born to and raised by Charles and Viola Smith on their family farm in Calverton, N.Y. He attended Riverhead High School, earned an ROTC scholarship and went on to graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y. He then served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy and Navy Reserve from 1955 to 1967. His service included four Arctic and two Antarctic cruises aboard the ice breaker USS Atka in support of scientific research. He also served as an assistant professor of navigation and naval engineering at the University of Washington.

After the U.S. Navy he went on to a long and highly successful business career in photographic film manufacturing, beginning at Dupont de Nemours in Rochester and culminating as executive vice president at Powers Chemco Technologies and Konica Imaging, USA in Glen Cove, N.Y., where he was widely respected as a tough, straight shooter who wanted the unvarnished facts but was always quick with the necessary support and guidance to help others succeed.

Over a long and productive lifetime, Doug made his homes in Seattle, Wash.; Rochester; Lincroft, N.J., Oyster Bay and Baiting Hollow, Long Island, N.Y.; as well as Jensen Beach and Fort Myers, Fla.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Maureen (Mahoney) Smith of Fort Myers; sons, Doug Jr. (Kathy), Scott and Terence (Yasemin); daughters, Sharon (Matthew) and Heather (Gonzalo); grandchildren, Matt, Doug, Kate, Emily, Sarah, Terence and Hannah; sister Doris Scudder; brothers Gilbert and Richard (Dolores); in-laws Shirley Smith Simon and Francis Mahoney; and a lifetime collection of treasured friends and colleagues, both old and new. He will now be joining our dearly departed, Herbert (Shirley), Laurence (Doris), Dorothy (Gilbert), Ellen (Francis), and John Simon (Shirley).

Doug was a man of steadfast loyalty and good will. Always with a “glass half full” attitude, he had a mischievous, wry sense of humor and could, on occasion, spin a yarn. He was a man who loved deeply, and was deeply loved in return by his large family, including several nieces and nephews, friends and colleagues alike. He was a guidepost, a role model, and provided the perfect example of a life truly well lived. He will be dearly missed and emulated by all who have come after. He will never be forgotten.

There is an online memorial for Doug at fortmyersmemorial.com, where photos and comments can be shared by all.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice in memory of Doug. The family will be planning a celebration of his life at a later date due to COVID-19.
