Kimberly Ann Pawlowski

April 13, 1972 – March 8, 2022

Kimberly gained her angel wings on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at the age of 49.

Kim was born in Port Jefferson, N.Y., the daughter of Stanley Pawlowski Jr. and Margaret Read Pawlowski. She was a beloved older sister to her five siblings, Margaret “Peggy” Byrnes (Robert Byrnes), Stanley Pawlowski III, Ellen Pawlowski, Kristine Pawlowski Rodriguez (Eduardo Rodriguez) and Paul Pawlowski (Anne Meister).

Kim graduated from Mattituck High School in 1991, and was friend to all. She cultivated lifelong friendships with those she met at St. Isidore’s Catholic School in her early years, Mattituck High School, work colleagues and many others along the way. She was dedicated to her friends and family, and cherished the strong bonds they had.

Kim was a talented athlete and grew up with a tennis racket in her hand. When the Pawlowski family moved from Rocky Point to Cutchogue in 1987, they constructed a tennis court in their backyard that enabled Kim to excel in the sport. She was named First Team All-Conference and played Division I tennis in college.

After earning several degrees and licenses in various professions, she worked as a phlebotomist. She showed love and kindness to her patients and was a trusted partner of the medical teams with which she served patients. Kim then went on to work in property management at Riverhead Landings for Related Management and Fairfield Properties. She managed a large team and over 50 properties on the East End. Kim had an unwavering work ethic. She was organized and on top of everything she did, yet led with compassion. She made her residents and colleagues feel special, forging friendships with them, as well as their extended families.

Kim had a heart of gold, and held a special place for those in need and those struggling with addiction. Kim regularly volunteered at homeless shelters and community outreach programs. Through her work at the shelters she forged relationships with individuals in need, often bringing food, clothes and necessities. Most importantly, Kim saw people for who they were and made them feel worthy. Kim loved random acts of kindness and paying it forward, and would regularly pay for the coffee of the people behind her at Starbucks and or surprise her loved ones at dinner with a paid bill. Beyond her generosity of time and service, in October 2020, Kim gave the gift of life to a friend’s brother and donated her kidney to him. Kim said that she never gave birth to children of her own, but she did give life.

Kim was a proud aunt and shared her life with her nieces and nephews, Elizabeth-Anne, Bryson, Madelyn, Brynn and Desmond. She showered them with love, gifts, treats and special notes and cards for every single important day, birthday or holiday, always making them feel special and important.

Kim showed the depths of her heart over and over, but never more than the way she cared for and attended to her Babci (Adele Pawlowski) for many years toward the end of her life. Kim carried out every whim or wish she had. Kim was Babci’s girl, and we are comforted knowing Babci met Kim with open arms and a “Hey, babe” when she left this world for the next.

Brian Stewart was the love of her life, and she was heartbroken to lose him in December 2019. Kim’s love for Brian was vast and wide, as well as the love she had for Brian’s daughter, Ashley, and his family. We are again comforted knowing Brian met her with a giant hug and his signature fireworks for her arrival in Heaven.

Kim loved traditions, organizing parties and just being together. In 2016, she decided upon a new family tradition. She purchased matching pajamas for every family member and forced everyone to wear them on Christmas. It has been a loved family tradition ever since.

Kim will be dearly missed every day by her family and many friends, and her beloved puppy, Mylo. She will be remembered for her loving spirit and kindness. She could always be counted on. She never forgot a birthday or missed a family event, she remembered upcoming surgeries for third cousins once removed, and she was always first in line to offer her support. Kim loved big and hard and if you were her friend, you were her family and you were in. Forever.

Please join us to celebrate the life and beautiful spirit of Kimberly Ann Pawlowski by being generous, kind and loving.

The family received visitors March 12 at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead, N.Y., followed by a funeral service at Old Steeple Community Church in Aquebogue, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, to honor Kim’s memory and dedication to serving others, please consider donating to National Kidney Foundation or Maureen’s Haven Homeless Outreach.

This is a paid notice.

Southold resident Dorothy Pfalzer passed away peacefully on March 11, 2022, at the age of 94 years.

Dorothy was born on Jan. 14, 1928, in Manhattan, N.Y., to William and Thelma Lupton.

She was predeceased in 1991 by her husband, W. Edward Pfalzer, whom she married in 1948. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Cheryl Boeckman, in 2013. She is survived by her sister, Jean Rieger; her son, Thomas Pfalzer, and his wife, Suzanne Breitenbach; her grandson, Keith Lutz, and his wife, Debra Lutz; and her great-grandchildren, Jaclyn, Ashley and Ryan.

Table tennis was something Dorothy excelled at, and even in her later years she would head down to the Southold Town Recreation Center for a game or three with the other ping-pong players there.

Lois Pike Eyre

Lois Pike Eyre — a wonderfully creative woman who met the love of her life through music — passed away peacefully on March 8, 2022, after valiantly battling multiple illnesses for many years. She was 74.

Lois was born on Feb. 25, 1948, in Nyack, N.Y. She was the first child of Doris Orth Pike, a teacher, and Otis G. Pike, a future congressman. They moved back to the Pike family home in Riverhead later that year, on Election Night, when Harry Truman famously defeated Thomas Dewey.

Growing up in Riverhead, Lois inherited the family’s love of the sea. For her entire life, she enjoyed boating and had a deep love for Peconic Bay, the Long Island Sound, Block Island and the family bungalow on the bay.

Above all, Lois was blessed with creativity in the arts. She was gifted in painting, drawing, acting and, especially, music. In addition to singing in church choirs, she studied piano for 12 years.

Her true artistic passion, however, was the flute. She had about six months of lessons from the nationally prominent flutist Mark Thomas while in the eighth grade. From then on, she was self-taught. She joined the Riverhead Monday Night Band and Summer Band around age 13. For many years, she was their principal flutist, appearing often as a soloist. Her final solo appearance was under the musical direction of her husband, John Eyre.

While excelling at Riverhead High School, Lois performed with several honors ensembles. As a sophomore and junior, she was principal second flute and, as a senior, she was principal flutist with the Suffolk All-County Band. She was a member of the first flute section of the winter 1965 All-State Band. On Jan. 16, 1965, Lois won the woodwind division of the South Shore Symphony (Bay Shore) Concerto Competition. She also met her future husband, whom she beat in the competition. At that time, she rebuffed his romantic interest. Seventeen years later, he asked her to go on a date and Lois (after praying) finally said yes.

After graduating from Riverhead High School in 1966, Lois went to Radcliffe College, the women’s college affiliated with Harvard, in Cambridge, Mass. She graduated in 1970 with a Harvard A.B. degree in social relations.

While in college, she performed with the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra, as well as with numerous smaller ensembles and pit orchestras for shows, including Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Yeomen of the Guard.” She also developed her interest in acting and performed in many plays during college and for years after.

After graduation, she spent another five years in Cambridge, working in a wide variety of jobs.

In 1975, needing a change of lifestyle, she returned to Riverhead and became vice president for public relations at Central Suffolk Hospital (now Peconic Bay Medical Center). Her increasing interest in the visual arts led her to working in graphic art during her spare time. In early 1980, she took the courageous step of leaving her job and starting her own business, Lois Pike Graphics. She had notable success for almost 30 years before retiring for health reasons. She did any work that had to do with print — primarily posters, brochures, catalogs and concert programs. Some of her most prominent work was to design and produce the concert programs for all Suffolk County honors music groups (NYSCAME and SCMEA) for many years, as well as hundreds of brochures for South Oaks Hospital.

Like her parents and siblings, Lois was an accomplished public speaker. During the past four decades, she gave many speeches and introductions, mostly for arts organizations.

In 2019, Lois and John were honored by the Friends of Riverhead Free Library for their more than 30 years of service to the Piano Plus Concert Series.

Lois was predeceased by her parents and her brother Robert. She is survived by her loving husband, John; brother Douglas; sister-in-law Carol F. Pike; niece Julia McGann; nephew Otis Pike; brother-in-law Dr. Robert Eyre; sister-in-law Katherine Eyre; nephews Peter (Rebecca) Eyre, Dr. Stephen Eyre (Dr. Catherine Sumner) and Dr. Andrew (Lisa) Eyre; four grand-nieces; and two grand-nephews. Many other loved ones in faraway places ranging from Denmark to Cambodia are mourning Lois’ passing.

The family will receive visitors Friday, March 25, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, at Living Water Full Gospel Church in Riverhead.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Lois’ memory to any of the following would be deeply appreciated: Monday Night Band (c/o René Suprina, president, 81 Rabbit Run, Riverhead, NY 11901); the Sound Symphony Orchestra (soundsymphony.org); Living Water Full Gospel Church (livingwater.online); and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church (754 Montauk Highway, Islip, NY 11751).

Dorothy Joan Horton

Joan Horton of Peconic died peacefully at home on March 24, 2022, surrounded by family. She was 86 years old.

Joan was born Jan. 23, 1936, in Greenport, N.Y., to Dorothy (Corke) and Ottomar Gerhardt. She was raised in Cutchogue, N.Y., alongside her sister, Elizabeth (Betsy) Tyler.

She attended Mattituck High School, where she was involved in the music program. She was famously known for her participation in the “Mattituck Octet,” which spurred her love of singing.

She sang with Cutchogue Presbyterian Church’s choir, and it was there that she met her true love, Phil. She married Philip Goldsmith Horton on Nov. 26, 1955. They started their life together at the Horton family farmhouse in Peconic, where all of her children were born, later moving into their permanent home on Peconic Bay.

Joan was a constant fixture in her children’s lives, becoming a Girl Scout and 4-H leader, attending her children’s sporting events and performances, and teaching swimming lessons in the summer.

Once her children were grown she became involved with East End Hospice, working and volunteering with them for over 20 years. In addition, she volunteered with RSVP, participated in the North Fork Chorale, and was a 60-year member of the Cutchogue Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

After becoming a grandmother, she remained faithful to nurturing her family. Over time she became known as “Gramma Joan” to everyone she met. Her home, which was always open to guests, was lovingly deemed the “Horton Hotel,” known for its extravagant holiday parties, Fourth of July weekends and revelry of all kinds! She was a true matriarch, keeping friends and family, both near and far, connected through her home — a place that has been a sanctuary and a haven for many, due largely to the sense of community Joan created over the years.

Predeceased by her husband and their infant son, Philip Gary Horton, she is survived by her sister; children Jeffrey (Andrea) Horton of Exeter, Pa., Deborah (Chuck) VanDuzer of Peconic, N.Y., and Donna (Nol) Horton-Batist of Peconic; grandchildren Adam Horton, Sara Campa, Jesse VanDuzer, Amanda (Val) Ramnarine and Carly and Pamela Batist; as well as great-grandchildren Avery, Cole, Ben and Ellie.

The family will receive visitors Monday, March 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where funeral services will be held at 6 p.m., with the Rev. Peter J. Kelley officiating. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, at Cutchogue Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband and son.

Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice or the Christopher Brandle Joy of Life Foundation.

This is a paid notice.
