George F. Klatt

George F. Klatt of South Jamesport died Aug. 8 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. He was 87. 

He was born June 21, 1927, in Manhattan to Hertha (Borrman) and Hans Klatt and received his high school diploma. Mr. Klatt served in the Merchant Marines from 1945 to 1948 and after that, served in the New York State Army National Guard. He was the owner of Hans Klatt and Son Sheet Metal Work in Aquebogue.

Mr. Klatt was a chief for Jamesport Fire Department. Family members said he enjoyed fishing, sailing and woodworking.

Mr. Klatt is survived by his wife, Mary (née Young); his sons, Frederick of South Jamesport and William of Jamesport; his daughter, Christine Stevens of South Jamesport; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. Cremation will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to Jamesport Fire Department or Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps.


Evan J. Berry

Evan J. Berry of Riverhead died Aug. 10. He was 28. 

He was born March 19, 1986, to Eric and Dale (Birkmier) Berry, attended Riverhead schools and graduated from Riverhead High School in 2004. While in high school, Evan was a member of the Riverhead Blue Waves football team. He attended Iona College and worked as a service technician for Peconic Propane in Calverton.

Evan is survived by his father, Eric; his mother, Dale; his sisters, Lauren and Kaitlyn; his brothers, Colin and Justin; his grandparents, Jack and Gail Birkmier and his fianceé, Sarah Szczygiel.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, Aug. 13, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place Thursday, Aug. 14, at 9:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will take place at the church cemetery.

Harold Hansen Jr.

Harold Hansen Jr. of Riverhead died Aug. 6 at his home. He was 86. 

He was born June 14, 1928, in Riverhead to Harold and Helen Hansen and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Most recently, he worked as a salesman for Consolidated Cigar Corp in Long Island City.

Mr. Hansen’s son Dan said his father was very active in the Moose Lodge, receiving the Pilgrim Degree of Merit, the highest honor awarded to a member of Moose International. Dan also spoke about his father being an avid New York Mets fan.

Mr. Hansen was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Patricia, in 2010 and is survived by his sons, Ron and Dan, both of Riverhead and Tim of West Islip; his brother, Robert of North Carolina; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family received visitors Aug. 8 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service took place Aug. 9 at St. John the Evangelist Church in Riverhead, officiated by Father Larry Duncklee. Interment took place at the church cemetery.

Mary T. Geller

Mary T. Geller of Greenport died Aug. 7, 2014 at Peconic Bay Medical Center Skilled Nursing Facility. She was 89. 

She was born June 7, 1925, to Florence (Cashman) and Louis Thode and was a graduate of St. Agnes High School and Empire College.

On Sept. 3, 1949, she married George C. Geller and together they made their home in Aquebogue from 1964 until his passing in 1996. The following year she moved to Greenport.

Surviving are her children Eileen Szczepanik of Riverhead, Susan Deerkoski of Greenport and Georgia Geller (Edward Brandow) of Mattituck; four grandchildren, Michael Scott, Suzanne McLaughlin, Jilian Deerkoski and Evan Brandow and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, George C. Geller in 1996 and a daughter Virginia Bossung in 1989.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Aug. 15, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 16, at 9 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead, with Father Larry Duncklee officiating. Interment will be at St. John’s R.C. Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Veterans Administration.

Antoinette Normoyle

Longtime Flanders resident Antoinette Normoyle died at her home Aug. 15, 2014 from lung cancer. She was 77.

She was born Aug. 14, 1937, in Queens to Tom and Wilhelmina Murray and married Stanley Normoyle April 8, 1972. For 30 years she worked for Suffolk County Real Service Tax Agency.

Ms. Normoyle was an active member St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead, volunteering for Parish Outreach and receiving the church’s Woman of the Year award in 2004.

Family members said was a fan and supporter of Normoyle Racing and enjoyed the New York Yankees, New York Liberty and auto racing .

Ms. Normoyle was predeceased by her uncle, Ernie Mikanek and is survived by her husband, Stanley; her son and daughter-in-law, James and Roxane Normoyle Sr.; her grandchildren, James Jr., Kyle and Courtney Normoyle and Erica, Michael and Joseph Manglaviti; and her great-grandchild, Tanner James.

A funeral service will take place Tuesday, Aug. 19, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to McLaughlin-Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Mattie Langhorne

Mattie Langhorne of Riverhead died Aug. 13 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. She was 94. 

She was born June 7, 1920, in Rice, Va. to Harrison and Evangerlean Johnson and was a homemaker who loved cooking and playing bingo.

Ms. Langhorne was predeceased by her husband, Melvin and her son John in 2010 and is survived by her children, Rita Ross, Dorothy Langhorne, Ellen Coles, Elvane Langhorne and Richard Langhorne; her sisters, Pearline Hawkins and Lula Johnson; her brother, Richard Johnson; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 31 great-great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-great grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, Aug. 19, from 9-11 a.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead, with a funeral service taking place at 10 a.m. Cremation will be private.

 

James E. Cooper Jr.

Former Mattituck resident James E. Cooper Jr. of Marina, Calif. died Aug. 12 after a long battle with cancer. He was 58. 

Mr. Cooper is survived by his wife, Donna; his mother, Julie Cooper; his sister, Judy Doroski and niece, Julie.

All services will take place in Marina, Calif. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Elizabeth Lokkeberg

Elizabeth “Betty” Lokkeberg of Jamesport died Aug. 15, 2014, at the age of 84. 

Ms. Lokkeberg was the beloved wife of Kenneth; the loving mother of Mary Meagher, Judy Schoemmell, Andrew (Jo), Phillip (Silvana), Arne and Michael Lokkeberg, and the late Mary “Stella” Petty and Christopher Anderson. She was the the cherished grandmother of Shannon Walker, Kimberly Michiels, John Meagher, Kevin Petty, Melissa Petty, Tara Powers, Robert Schoemmell, Victoria Piecey, Kelly Cox, David Schoemmell, Lena Hallock, and Mary, Jammie Lee, Joseph and Maria Lokkeberg; and great-grandmother of 18.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, Aug. 19, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Burial will take place at the church cemetery.

George W. Wurtz

George W. Wurtz of Calverton died Aug. 18 in East Atlantic Beach, N.Y. He was 84. 

Mr. Wurtz was born July 15, 1930, in Franklin Square to George and Mary Wurtz and worked as a cable splicer for Long Island Lighting Company for 42 years. Family members said he enjoyed golfing and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred, of Calverton; his children, Kevin, George, Richard, Kathleen and Thomas; his sister, Marie Brandenstein; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Aug. 22, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral mass will take place Saturday, Aug. 23, at noon at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead, officiated by Father Robert Kuznik. Cremation was private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lustgarten Foundation.

Herodotus ‘Dr. Dan’ Damianos, Pindar Vineyards founder, dies at 82

Herodotus Damianos, a medical doctor, North Fork wine pioneer and the founder of Pindar Vineyards, Long Island’s biggest wine producer, died Monday, according to a family spokesman. He was 82.

Gerard Meade

Gerard Meade of Calverton died Aug. 23. He was 63. 

He was born July 18, 1951, in Brooklyn to Catherine (Reilly) and Anthony P. Meade. After attending college, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving from 1975 to 1983. Most recently, he worked as a technician at Brookhaven National Lab.

Family members said he enjoyed NASCAR.

Mr. Meade is survived by his wife, Susan; his mother, Catherine; his sisters, Katherine Quartararo of Vero Beach, Fla., and Eileen Rothmeier of Oakdale; and his brother, James, of Commack. He was an uncle of 8 and a great-uncle of 25.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery.

James Klein

James E. Klein of Mattituck passed away at State University of New York Stony Brook Medical Center Aug. 25, 2014. He was 70.  

He was born September 16, 1943, in Jamaica, N.Y. and was the son of Kathryn and Edward J. Klein. He was raised in Bound Brook, N.J. and spent summers in Mattituck where he built a home in 1992 and lived full time.

Jim received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Rutgers University where he was on the wrestling team. He worked at Fiduciary Trust International in Manhattan for 35 years, retiring in 2000 as senior vice president of Human Resources. He helped to plan and design the firm’s space as the World Trade Centers were being constructed.

Jim was an avid sailor, boater, fisherman, reader, and photographer. His favorite photography subjects were family and nature. Jim enjoyed spending time at their second home on Man O’ War Cay, Abacos, Bahamas and traveling, particularly in the Caribbean and Italy. Two accomplishments he was proud to check off his “bucket list” were sailing transatlantic to deliver a boat to the Cowes race in England and flying in a glider. He was a connoisseur of cheeseburgers but did not care for blueberries. Jim was a true renaissance man, and was loved by all who knew him.

Jim leaves his loving wife, Fran, of 35 years and four children and their spouses, Tom and Kimberly Marcus, Scott and Kathy Marcus, Jennifer and Ray Moore, and Kimberly and Kevin Mulvehill. He also leaves two beautiful granddaughters, Grace and Lindsay Mulvehill.

Albert Randolph Boergesson

Al was born Aug. 17, 1922 in Southold to Margaret (Jones) and Carl G. Boergesson and attended local schools.

On Aug. 7, 1943, he married Gloria Ruth (Jacobs) and together they made their home in Greenport Village from 1960 to 1997. He had also lived in Churchville, N.Y. and more recently in Colonial Village in Southold.

Al had been a farmer for Judge Hill’s property, a carpenter for Goldsmith Construction and a maintenance man for Mattituck Shopping Center.

Predeceased by his wife Gloria on Sept. 27, 1996, he is survived by his companion, Joan Corbett of Southold; a son, Kevin (Karen) Boergesson of Southold; a granddaughter, Amy Melissa Boergesson; an adopted daughter, Corinne Bednoski of Peconic; three adopted grandsons, Kevin, Joel and Jayme Bednoski and extended family at Mattituck Shopping Center including the entire Cardinale Family; James and Brian McKinnon; Jillian Stahler; and Barbara and Tony.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Sept. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Services will be held at 7 p.m., officiated by the Rev. Dr. Peter J. Kelley. Interment will take place at Southold Presbyterian Cemetery.

Alexander E. Horton Jr. of Manorville died Sept. 2. He was 78.

Marianne Perrone

Longtime Riverhead resident Marianne Perrone died Sept. 2 at her home. She was 56. 

She was born April 7, 1958, in Riverhead to Frederick Bauer and Louise Listeman and was employed as an animal rescuer for Kent Animal Shelter.

Ms. Perrone’s husband, Joseph said that she loved people and animals, and was a proud, new grandmother. He also said that they loved taking their annual trip to Atlantic City.

She was predeceased by her parents, and is survived by her husband, Joseph; her daughter, Michelle Toscano of New Jersey; her brother, Fred Bauer of Texas; her sister, Nancy Knight of Calverton and her granddaughter.

The family will receive visitors for a memorial service, Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. Cremation was private.

Memorial donations may be made to Kent Animal Shelter.


Linda Sylvia Baker

Linda Sylvia Baker of Cutchogue died at her home Sept. 5, 2014. She was 55.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 10 and 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Rite of Committal will be private.

Memorial donations made to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, 100 Nichols Road, Stony Brook, NY 11794 would be appreciated.

Anastacia Smith

Lifelong Riverhead resident Anastacia (Berezny) Smith died Sept. 6 at Riverhead Care Center from complications of a stroke. She was 89. 

Born April 24, 1925, to John and Anastasia (Shepish) Berezny, Ms. Smith grew up on the family farm on Mill Road and was the last survivor of ten siblings.

She was a homemaker who loved taking care of her house and family. Ms. Smith enjoyed sewing, cooking, and canning and took great pleasure and pride over the years in her many flower gardens.

Ms. Smith loved all animals: domestic and wild, especially Schöne, Heidi, Fritz and Simba. She also enjoyed and took delight in watching the many birds and squirrels who shared her backyard feeders.

After her husband retired in 1982, they spent many winter seasons in their Florida condo. Ms. Smith enjoyed traveling and going to casinos as well as seeing plays and concerts.

Ms. Smith was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Harry in Nov. 2013 and is survived by her daughter, Carolyn; her sister-in-law, Anna Berezny and many nieces and nephews.

The family received visitors Sept. 8 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Sept. 9 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Burial took place at the church cemetery.

Kaitlyn Doré Doorhy

Kaitlyn Doré Doorhy of Mattituck died suddenly Aug. 22, 2014, at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, Conn. She was 20.

She was born June 12, 1994, at Southampton Hospital to Joseph M. and Darla A. (Nankervis) Doorhy and was a National Honor Society graduate of Mattituck High School’s Class of 2012. She had been attending Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., and was a member of the National Political Science Honor Society, Dean’s List and Kappa Delta Sorority.

In addition, she had been a Girl Scout ambassador, a member of Distributive Education Club of America, a cheerleader, soccer player, blood drive committee member and donor, 5K run participant, a member of the MHS Booster Club, Parent Teacher Student Association fashion show, concert band and jazz band, was a New York State School Music Association soloist, played four instruments and participated in Music in the Parks and the National Youth Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., in 2009.

Kaitlyn was also a member of Sacred Heart Parish (Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck), where she had been an altar server and was involved in Maureen’s Haven, the religious education program and the annual Christmas tea event.

At the age of 17, she was the manager of aMano Restaurant in Mattituck and also worked at ALure Restaurant in Southold and Michael Kors at Tanger Outlets in Riverhead.

In 2011, she was Mattituck Lions’ Strawberry Queen and attained the rank of chief in the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC).

She is survived by her parents; her sister, Carly Anne Doorhy of Mattituck; two sets of grandparents; aunts; uncles; cousins; great-aunts; and great-uncles.

The family received friends Aug. 28 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where prayer services were conducted by Sister Anne Lynch, RSM. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 29 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church by Monsignor Joseph Staudt, Father David Buckley of Sacred Heart University and Father Peter Garry of St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold.

Interment followed at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Memorial donations in Kaitlyn’s memory may be made payable to Kappa Delta Sorority at Sacred Heart University and should be forwarded to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Doorhy, 1125 Ole Jule Lane, Mattituck, NY 11952.

Linda Sylvia Baker

She was born in Oceanside April 8, 1959, to Louis Alfred and Concettina Norma (née Gigliotti) Sylvia. Raised in Montauk, she was a graduate of East Hampton High School Class of 1978.

In earlier years, Linda Baker worked for Viking Fleet in Montauk and more recently was a homemaker and artist of pencil drawings depicting nature scenes.

She loved the water and enjoyed boating, traveling, NASCAR (driver Jeff Gordon) and the Pocono Raceway and was fond of cats.

Cooking, which she excelled at, was important to her recalled family members.

Left to mourn her passing are her husband Paul W. Baker whom she married in 1993; two sons, Eric and Paul III; two sisters, Louann Sylvia and Maria Sylvia; a half-sister, Dorothy Schlegel and a half-brother, James Sylvia.  She was predeceased by a brother Louis Sylvia, Jr.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday-Thursday, Sept. 10 and 11, from 7 to 9 p.m. at  DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.

Former Riverhead resident Montaigne Lamont Henderson of Virginia Beach, Va. died at his home Aug 31. He was 41. 

He was predeceased by his father, Melvin Henderson and is survived by his mother, Joan Lamb of Riverhead; his fianceé, Jovana Alamo his grandmother, Annie Lamb of Elizabeth City, N.C.; his three daughters, Alexis and Ashley Henderson of Queens and Kaylie Clark of Hertford, N.C.; two sons, Montaigne Henderson of Riverhead and Nicholas Henderson of Bronx; one sister, Isha Henderson of Center Moriches; four brothers, Damian Henderson and Kevin Pollard Jr. of Riverhead, Shawn Henderson of Center Moriches and Melvin Henderson Jr. of Connecticut and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family received visitors Sept. 4 at Walson Funeral Home in Elizabeth City. A funeral service took place Sept. 5 at New Sawyer’s Creek Baptist Church in Camden, N.C. Interment took place at the Church Cemetery.
