Joseph W. Zuhoski

Joseph W. “Bunny” Zuhoski of Mattituck died April 23, 2015. He was 72. 

Bunny was born July 19, 1942, in Greenport to Joseph Bruno and Rose (Bialeski) Zuhoski. and June 26, 1965, “fifty wonderful years ago,” he married the former Carolyn Grodski.

Always a farmer, Bunny had been a correction officer with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department.

He enjoyed fishing, farming, cutting cauliflower and playing softball.

Bunny loved to travel, especially to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun casinos. He also loved polka music and polka dancing and was a loyal Red Sox fan.

Surviving are his wife, Carol; two children, Wendy Zuhoski (Danny Okeefe) and Greg Zuhoski (Melanie McEvoy) and three sisters, RoseMarie Haupt, Christine Pumillo and Cindy Zuhoski.

The family received visitors April 26 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 27, at 11 a.m., officiated by Father Robert Kuznik.

Maryanna Ekster

Maryanna Ekster of New Suffolk died at her home April 25, 2015. She was 86. 

She was born in Greenport on March 27, 1929, to Michael and Stefania (Baraczewski) Sawicki and was a graduate of Mattituck High School.

On Sept. 25, 1949, she married Frank Ekster at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue.

Mary had been a school bus driver and custodian for New Suffolk School for over 40 years.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Ostrabrama Parish, a former Columbiette and a member of Cutchogue Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Predeceased by her husband, Frank and a son Ronald; she is survived by a daughter, Diane Surozenski of Cutchogue and a son Lawrence Ekster of Cutchogue; a brother Edward Sawicki; two sisters Eugenia Beebe and Stella Hughes; seven grandchildren, Michael Ekster of Gray, Maine, Christopher Ekster of Southold, Timothy Ekster of Cutchogue, Michelle Ekster of Cutchogue, Teri Schusteritsch of Cutchogue, Lori Surozenski of Laurel and Joseph Ekster of Laurel and three great-grandchildren. She was also predeceased by siblings Stanley Sawicki, Helen Lech and Richard Sawicki.

The family received visitors April 27 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold where parish prayer services were conducted that evening. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated April 28 at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church, officiated by Father Piotr Narkiewicz. Interment took place at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

George P. Chimenti of Aquebogue died at his home April 24, 2015. He was 92.

The family received visitors April 27, with hours continuing Tuesday, April 28, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, at Grace Episcopal Church in Riverhead, where the Rev. Mary Garde will officiate. Interment with U.S. Marine Corps honors will take place at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury.

Memorial donations in Mr. Chimenti’s name may be made to Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Elbert Jefferson

Elbert “Tommy” Jefferson was born in Riverhead March 4, 1956, to Alice Jefferson and the late James Hughly. He graduated from Bellport High School in 1974. Tommy enjoyed baseball, football, and a host of other sports, but basketball was his passion. He took pride in his appearance and was a very neat and clean individual.

For many years Tommy was battling many illnesses and was called home April 20, 2015. He leaves behind his mother and stepfather, Alice Jefferson and Ernie Boatwright of Alabama

He was predeceased by his brother, Rudy and is survived by his sons, Sean of Riverhead and Elbert of South Carolina; his daughter-in-law Kawana, also of South Carolina; his grandchildren Dazjuan, Darrin, Christian and Taylor Jefferson; his aunts, Vivian Holmes of Bellport and Patsy Downing of Riverhead; his dear friend, Barbara Jamison and a host of nieces and nephews, who will all miss Tommy dearly.

The family received visitors April 28 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead, where eulogies were delivered by family and friends. Burial took place at Washington Memorial Park in Coram.

Stephanie Gates

Former longtime Wading River resident Stephanie Gates of Rock Hill, S.C. went to be with the Lord April 18, 2015. Stephanie was born May 10, 1921, to John and Mary Bonk. She married George H. Gates Jr. in 1938 and they made their home in Wading River. George passed away in 1983.

Steffie, as she was known to family and friends, was a kind and gracious lady with a beautiful spirit. She loved her home and was well known for her beautiful gardens, fabulous Christmas cookies, and award winning cheesecake and jams.

Stephanie was devoted to her family, raising two daughters, Virginia Nosal of North Carolina and Phyllis Waski of Wading River; and a son, George Gates III, who predeceased her in 2013. She also leaves behind two sons-in-law, Matthew Nosal, and Stephen Waski. She also adored her grandchildren, Edward, Geoffrey, Andrew and Sandra and her five great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Matthew, Collin, Meghan and Nathaniel.

In the community, Stephanie loved working for more than 40 years for Little Flower Children’s Services in Wading River and had been an active member of Wading River Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

She will truly be missed by all who knew her.

A memorial service will take place at at time and date to be announced.

Gisele C. Costello of Riverhead died April 22 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. She was 86. 

She was born April 29, 1928, in Quebec, Canada and was a homemaker.

Predeceased by her husband, Henry in 2011, Ms. Costello is survived by her daughters, Carol Harbeson, Cathy Guthlein and Jean Finnegan; and two grandchildren.

The family received visitors April 27 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral Mass took place April 28 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment took place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Leonard Mastro

Leonard Mastro of Holtsville and Southold died suddenly April 22, 2015. He was 53. 

Born Oct. 11, 1961, in Manhasset to Louis and Helen (Podstupka) Mastro, he was a postal carrier for United States Postal Service.

He was the beloved son of Louis and Helen; loving brother of Madalyn (Curtis) Cooper, Louis (Elizabeth) and Karen Mastro; adoring uncle of Brian, Evan, Lauren, Kaitlyn, Aidan and Olivia; lifelong partner of Mary and stepfather of Damien.

The family received visitors April 26 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Religious services were held April 27 at the funeral home with the Rev. Kenneth Hand officiating. Interment was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Southold.

Margaret Bell Flattery

Former Riverhead and Moriches resident Margaret Bell Flattery of New Canaan, Conn. died April 19. 

She was born Oct. 6, 1928, in Riverhead to Ulick and Winifred Bell.

Ms. Flattery graduated from The College of Mount St Vincent in Riverdale, N.Y. in 1950 with a baccalaureate degree in nursing. She later received a master of science in administration and supervision from Long Island University.

Ms. Flattery worked as a nursing supervisor and instructor at Southampton Hospital in Southampton until her marriage in 1955. She returned to nursing in 1968 as an instructor of licensed practical nurses, and later an administrator at Harry B. Ward Technical and Academic Center, part of Board of Cooperative Educational Services in Riverhead. She retired from that position in 1993 and enjoyed many years of world travel, and according to her estimate, visited 86 countries.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Flattery, DDS. and  is survived by her four children, Michael of Redlands, Calif., Maureen of Richmond, Va., Kathleen Abrams of Wilmington, N.C. and Meghan Allen of New Canaan, Conn. as well as five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family received visitors April 24 at Hoyt Funeral Home in New Canaan.  A Mass of Christian Burial was held April 25 at St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan.

Joseph S. Forgione

Joseph S. Forgione died April 27 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 80.

He was born June 22, 1934, in Manhattan. He married Rose (née Caira) April 28, 1956, in Bayside, N.Y.

Mr. Forgione served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1958. He was a patrolman with New York Police Department and worked as an U.S. Postal Service administrator.

He was a member of the the American Legion in Queens, Riverhead Knights of Columbus, Riverhead Veterans of Foreign Wars and North Fork Italian American Club.

Family members said Mr. Forgione was a history buff, a coin collector a movie critic/buff who also enjoyed playing bocce ball.

He is survived by his wife, Rose, of Riverhead; his children, Joseph, of Massapequa Park, Jana Kolsen of Garden City, and John, of East Setauket; his sister, Dolores Dellapina; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, April 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday, April 30, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 1, at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery.

William A. Forte

William A. Forte of Calverton, formerly of Cutchogue and West Babylon passed on April 28, 2015 at the age of 84. 

Bill was born Sept. 10, 1930, in the Bronx to Anthony and Wilhemina Forte.

He was the beloved husband of Eleanor (née Strubel) for 55 years; the loving father of Krista (Patrick), David (Maria) and Stephen (Nancy); and the proud grandpa of seven, Daniel, Stephen, Alex, Matthew, Vincent, Sebastian and Guiliana. He was the brother of Richard, of Lombard, Ill. and brother-in-law of Norma and Walter Strubel.

Bill graduated from City College of New York and served in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps. from 1953 to 1955 as a 2nd lieutenant in Korea. He worked as a chemist for Polytex in the Bronx.

Bill was a member of Peconic Masonic Lodge 349 and Southold American Legion post 803.

Family members said Bill enjoyed classical music, boating, dancing and horseshoes.

The family will receive visitors Saturday, May 2, from to 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m Monday, May 4, at St Peter Lutheran Church in Greenport. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Harold Goodale, Riverhead Building Supply co-founder, dies at 92

HaroldGoodaleHarold E. Goodale, one of the co-founders of Riverhead Building Supply, died Thursday at the age of 92.

Mr. Goodale founded the company in 1948 along with his brother, Jesse Goodale II, and his uncle, Peter Ketcham, on Ostrander Avenue.

The Goodales had been a farming family up until then and originally planned to farm the Ostrander Avenue site before deciding instead to build a hardware store there.

That store later blossomed into Riverhead Building Supply, which now has 11 locations on Long Island and Rhode Island and is one of the area’s biggest employers and most charitable companies.

Harold’s brother Jesse died on Dec. 20, 2014.

A wake for Mr. Goodale will be at Tuthill Funeral home in Riverhead on Monday from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00pm. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Old Steeple Church on Main Road in Aquebogue.

Nancy Doris deLoiselle

Lifelong Cutchogue resident Nancy Doris deLoiselle died April 18, 2015 in Framingham, Mass. She was born Oct. 17, 1937, in Lynbrook to Henry and Lura (née Abrams) Krueger and was a graduate of Southold High School

On Nov. 22, 1969, she married Kenneth C. deLoiselle in Southold.

She had been a manager for New York Telephone Company.

Nancy was a lifetime member of The Order of the Eastern Star. She loved to travel with her husband spending winters at their second home on St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

An avid gardener, she was an especially talented knitter who made sweaters for her entire family.

She will forever be remembered as a devoted and loving wife and aunt.

Predeceased by her husband, Kenneth C. deLoiselle and her sister, Carole Ann Scholl; she is survived by two nephews, Thomas (Terri) Scholl of Westbourough, Mass. and Donald (Cynthia) Scholl of Cornwall, N.Y. and her much loved grandnieces and grandnephews, Lauren, Claire, Matthew and Jake.

The family will receive visitors Friday, May 8, from 9 to 10 a.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. A private family ceremony will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

George P. Chimenti

George P. Chimenti of Aquebogue died at his home April 24, 2015. He was 92.

He was born Feb. 5, 1923, in Inwood, N.Y., to Isabelle (Bobik) and Vincent L. Chimenti, who in 1925 became one of Nassau County’s first police detectives. George grew up in New Hyde Park and graduated from Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park. He continued his education at Nassau Community College and C.W. Post, Adelphi and Virginia universities. He then pursued a doctorate at the University of Maryland.

During World War II, George served for three years as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps, in the Pacific battles of Saipan, Tinian and Tarawa. For his honorable service, he was awarded the Purple Heart.

On May 16, 1949, George was appointed to the Nassau County Police Department and served as a patrolman, detective, sergeant, detective sergeant, lieutenant, detective lieutenant, captain, deputy inspector and inspector. He held assignments in the Division of Education and Training; 1st, 7th and 4th precincts; Detective Division; main office; 8th, 1st and 6th squads; precinct squads; and Highway Patrol Bureau.

In 1970, headlines read: “The Mystery of the Missing Churchill Painting/Roslyn’s Finest of Sixth Precinct Raise Pinkies with British Lady.” Art gallery owner Lawrence Shandell rode off with a borrowed oil painting on his vehicle’s roof. It fell off a few blocks from his home. Lady Audley, Churchill’s daughter and owner of the painting, arrived in this country soon after to participate in the sleuthing effort. On Feb. 25, 1970, Lt. George P. Chimenti, chief of detectives, and Det. Joseph Olehausen took Lady Audley and her attorney on a tour of East Hills, N.Y., in her chauffeured limousine to inspect the scene of the crime.

He was also involved with the New York State DWI program, developed with Gov. Nelson Rockefeller, and the police pursuit program. After 32 years of service, he retired Jan. 1, 1980.

George began a new career as a teacher at Piedmont (Virginia) Community College, where he was responsible for developing the criminal justice program, and later taught at Suffolk County Community College’s Riverhead and Selden campuses.

He lived in Massapequa from 1950 to 1973 and in Greenlawn from 1973 to 1980 before moving to Charlottesville, Va. He relocated to Shelter Island in 1986 and moved to Aquebogue in 1989.

He served as Shelter Island Town councilman from 1993 to 1995. He worked hard for affordable housing and the dredging of Ram Island causeway, was a member of the Shelter Island school board and was involved in the school’s expansion. George also served as vestryman at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and Grace Episcopal Church in Riverhead.

Professionally, he was a member of the Police Benevolent Association, Superior Officers Association and Detectives Association Inc.

Surviving are George’s wife, Karen E. (née Voorhes), whom he married Oct. 19, 1968, in Hempstead; his six children, Jack, of Florida, Catherine Ford of Sayville, George Jr., of New Portland, Maine, Christopher, of Lindenhurst, Janice Schiano of Farmingville and Gina Zarowin of Westhampton Beach; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, William, and three brothers, Vincent, Anthony and Daniel.

The family received visitors April 27 and 28 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. A funeral service was held April 29 at Grace Episcopal Church in Riverhead, Mother Mary Garde officiating. Interment, with U.S. Marine Corps honors, was at Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury.

Julia Margo Ambrose Praino

Julia Margo Ambrose Praino passed away April 30, 2015, at Riverhead Care Center.Julia was born Jan. 17, 1921, in New Suffolk to Pauline (Gallo) and John Ambrose.

Julia is survived by her devoted husband of 53 years, John; her best friend and sister, Rose “Rosie” DiMarco of Riverhead and godchildren, Robert A. Sikora M.D. of Fredricksburg, Va. and Ashley Sikora Pamer, Esq. of Baltimore, Md. She also leaves behind her tender caretakers, Rainey, Sharon, Angela, Linda and Theresa, who loved and cared for Julia, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Julia was predeceased by eight siblings, Mary Irene, Mildred, Margaret, Frank, Ralph, Joseph and John.

Julia and Rosie were owners of Modern Beauty Salon on Griffin Avenue in Riverhead for 61 years. They were not only business partners, but were inseparable, spending their time shopping, eating out and being happy in each others company.

The family received visitors May 3 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead, where parish prayer services were conducted that evening. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated May 4 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead, officiated by Father Larry Duncklee. Interment took place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Constance Ann Burrows

Constance “Connie” Ann Burrows was born Dec. 29, 1942, to Zelotes and Dorothy Howard Toliver in Greenport. She attended Greenport schools, where she participated in track and field, played the clarinet in the band, and sang in the chorus, carrying on the traditions of her musical family. She was known by her classmates to be “shy, sweet and reserved.” She graduated from Greenport High School in 1961. 

After high school, she attended business trade school in Manhattan to study accounting. After receiving her certificate she worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance. After moving to Riverhead, she worked at Riverhead Savings Bank.

While shopping for a gift in Riverhead at Carl and Bob’s, Constance met Martin, and the rest is history. Connie was married to Martin V. Burrows Sr. of Eleuthera, Bahamas, on Aug. 29, 1964. From this union came two children, Martin V. Burrows Jr. and Carla Burrows.

Connie’s life was centered around her husband of 50 years and her children and family. She visited her children quite often and loved to play the lottery, shop and keep up with the news.

Constance dealt with diabetes and complications from it for most of her life. However, that never stopped her from living a full and productive life. The casual observer would never suspect that she was not well. Connie loved to go out to various events around town with Martin. She loved to travel and was a joy to have around. Her demeanor was firm, loving, and her attitude was to stay moving even when you are down. Her laugh was infectious and could be heard from across the room.

She leaves to cherish her memories her husband, Martin V. Burrows Sr.; son, Martin V. Burrows Jr. of Fiji and daughter, Carla Burrows of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Irving Toliver (Beatrice) of Huntington and Edmund (Sabina) Toliver of Dortmund, Germany; one granddaughter, Femi Burrows of California; two aunts, Addie (Alvin) Pace of Peconic and Viola Howard of Texas; two uncles, George Toliver of Amityville and Conway Toliver of Providence, R.I.; two brothers-in-law, John and James (Rhonda) Burrows of Nassau, Bahamas; many sisters-in-law, Shirley Burrows, Marion (Derrick) Sands, Lilly Burrows, Cathy Burrows, Bessie Saunders, Joyce Colebrooke, Rosemary (Godfrey) Newry and Audrey Burrows, all of Nassau, Bahamas; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Always in touch with her extended family and friends, Connie will be greatly missed by all.

The family will receive visitors Friday, May 8, from 2 to 7 p.m. at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Westhampton Beach. Interment will take place at Riverhead Cemetery.

Hope S. Hergrueter

Hope S. Hergrueter of Mattituck passed away peacefully April 23, 2015, at the Riverhead Care Center. She was 95 years old. Hope was born on Jan. 20, 1920, to Alan F. Sawyer and Myra (Dutcher) Sawyer in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The family later moved to Mount Vernon, N.Y., where she graduated from A.B. Davis High School. She attended nursing school in Yonkers, N.Y., at St. John’s Riverside Hospital (later named The Cochran School of Nursing) and graduated with the Class of 1940. This began Hope’s long career of service to others. After becoming the school nurse teacher at Mattituck High School, she returned to college and graduated with a B.S. from Adelphi University. She retired from Mattituck-Cutchogue School in 1982 after 23 years of teaching.

She was involved as a leader of the Girls’ Sea Scouts and the East End Lions. Hope began her religious journey at Church of the Redeemer in Mattituck. She attended Greenport United Methodist Church with her husband, Otis M. Burt. Later, she joined Mattituck Presbyterian Church, where she was active as a Stephen Ministry Leader. Hope was also a deacon and an elder at MPC. At MPC, she was a member of the Women’s Association and the Lunch Bunch group.

Hope was an avid traveler. She enjoyed cruising throughout the world with her friends and family. Hope’s greatest joy was knitting. She has gifted many of her friends and family with handmade items.

Hope was predeceased by husbands Dr. Harlan B. Phillips, Otis M. Burt and Carl Hergrueter. She was also predeceased by a son, Harlan B. Phillips II, and a sister, Joan Fuchs, and by two stepdaughters, Sally Hergrueter and Rubina Burt Shephard.

She is survived by a sister, Gail Faircloth of Mattituck; three daughters, Leslie P. Tuthill (David) of Mattituck, Sherrill P. Kugler (Edward) of Mattituck and Kathie P. Brodeur (Patrick) of Jewett City, Conn.; four stepchildren, Robert M. Burt (Joan) of Webster, N.Y., Charles R. Burt (Carol) of Palm Springs, Calif., Dr. Charles Hergrueter (Megan) of Shelter Island and Wendy Murphy of Huntington; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were entrusted to DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.

Margaret Ingrassia of Calverton died May 8 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She was 72. She was born June 4, 1942, to Mildred (Miller) and John Van Houten. Family members said she was a homemaker.

Ms. Ingrassia is survived by her husband, William; her three children, Debra Smith of Medford, Lisa Gobrick of Riverhead and Gregory, of Edison, N.J.; her siblings, George and Raymond Van Houten of Medford and Millie Assa of Haskell, N.J.; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, May 12, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead, with a funeral service taking place at 8 p.m. The funeral procession will meet at the funeral home at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 13, to drive to Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Center Moriches.

Joseph Edgar of Riverhead died April 27. He was 83. 

He was born July 24, 1931, in Riverhead and was the son of Joseph A. Edgar.

Mr. Edgar received his master’s degree and was a teacher in the Riverhead Central School District.

Predeceased by his wife, Helen, in 1994, Mr. Edgar is survived by friends and a few cousins.

A funeral service was held May 4 at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment took place at the church cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Pontifical Mission Societies, 70 W. 36th St., 8th Floor, NY, NY 10018.

Funeral arrangements were in the care of McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Former longtime Glen Cove resident Edward A. Geleski of Riverhead, died May 9 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 78. 

He was born Aug. 25, 1936, in Glen Cove to Stephanna (Januszewiski) and Walter Geleski and attended Glen Cove High School. He married Mary Ellen (Nolan) in 1959 in Solon, Maine.

Mr. Geleski served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962, serving on the regimental combat team El (P).

For 29 years, he worked as a tree cutter for the City of Glen Cove.

Family members said Mr. Geleski enjoyed fishing, golf, travel, spending time at the pool and spending time with family.

Mr. Geleski is survived by his wife; his sons, Edward, of Verona, N.J. and Gary,of the Bronx; his daughters, Pamela Ryan of Berkeley Springs, W. Va. and Diana Duncan of Iowa City, Iowa and three grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors tThursday, May 14, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m., Friday, May 15, at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Marie Wells Remer

Marie W. Remer of Shelby Township, Mich. passed away April 12, 2015. 

Marie grew up on the family potato farm (est. 1661), located on the East End of Long Island. It is there she met Maynard Remer who was stationed on Long Island during World War II. She graduated from Russell Sage College in Troy, N.Y. and taught home economics for Rochester High School in Rochester, Mich.

Marie guided countless school groups through Remer’s Woods for nature walks. She was a member of Macomb Audubon Society, The Michigan Nature Association and Hallockville Museum Farm. She was an active lifetime member of the Congregational Church.

Marie worked with Michigan State University Cooperative Extension as a 4-H youth agent, creating programs for special needs youth. She was also invited to Belize to work with youth programs.

Marie was the loving wife of the late Maynard and beloved mother of Deborah J. Remer and William H. (Donna) Remer. Marie is also survived by her grandchildren John Abernathy, Margaret Farenger, Mark Abernathy; great grandchildren Dylan Farenger, Daniel Wood, James Thomas Abernathy, and Ella Abernathy and by her brother, Vernon F. Wells.

A funeral service was held April 16 at First Congregational of Rochester in Michigan with burial at Utica Cemetery in Shelby Charter Township, Mich.

Memorial donations can be made to Hallockville Museum Farm.
