John J. Herbst

John J. “Jack” Herbst, 72, of Riverhead died Dec. 13 at his home.

The son of Elizabeth (Minogue) and William Herbst, he was born Oct. 28, 1943, in Brooklyn.

John served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964, achieving the rank of private first class. He retired as a detective sergeant with the New York City Transit Police.

John was the beloved husband of Laraine (née Guerra); the dear father of Michelle (David), Dina Hannon (David) and John (Genelle); the brother of William Herbst OFM and Michael and the loving grandfather of five.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, Dec. 16, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner in Riverhead. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, at Saint John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead.

In lieu of flowers donations to the Lucille A. Fennessy Pulmonary Research Fund in Mount Sinai Hospital would be appreciated.

Shirley J. Scordato

Shirley J. Scordato of Riverhead died Dec. 11 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She was 88. 

The daughter of Angelina (Puniccio) and John Dellosso, she was born March 28, 1927.

Ms. Scordato was a high school graduate and a homemaker. She was a member of the Red Hat Society at Saddle Lakes in Riverhead.

Predeceased by her husband, Angelo, in 2010, she is survived by her sons Steven, John and Salvatore; four grandchildren and one sister.

The family received visitors Dec. 13 at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral mass took place Dec. 14 at Saint John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead, officiated by the Rev. Larry Duncklee. Burial took place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Patricia V. Linton Young

Former Riverhead resident Patricia V. Linton Young of East Hampton died Dec. 8 at Good Shepherd Hospice in Port Jefferson. She was 59. 

The daughter of George and Trudy Linton, she was born May 14, 1956, in Riverhead.

Ms. Young attended Riverhead High School and worked as a postal clerk in East Hampton. Family members said she loved animals.

Predeceased by her parents, she is survived by her children, Brandon and Lisa and her sister Doris (Dan) Griffin.

A graveside service will take place at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, at Jamesport Cemetery. Pastor Bell will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton.

Arrangements were entrusted to Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Edward J. Powers

Former Aquebogue resident Edward J. Powers of Calverton died Dec. 15 at Stony Brook University Medical Center. He was 84. 

The son of Patrick and Rose Powers, he was born Nov. 23, 1931, in Brooklyn. He graduated from Southampton College in 1972.

Mr. Powers served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1954. He worked as a land management specialist for the Suffolk County Department of Real Estate.

He was past president of the Riverhead Republican Club and was a past member of the Knights of Columbus. Family members said he loved golf, boating and collecting lighthouses and enjoyed Riverhead High School and Riverhead PAL football.

Predeceased by his sister Veronica Cinquegrana, Mr. Powers is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (née Fuller); his children, Maura Frankman of Riverhead, Edward, of Jamesport and Maribeth Vail of Riverhead; his sisters Marion Murnane of Tennessee and Joan Reese of Southold; and 11 grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, Dec. 20, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 21, at Saint John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Robert G. Rowehl

Robert G. Rowehl of Mattituck died at his home Dec. 15, 2015. He was 86.

He was born in Hicksville Feb. 25, 1929, to Diedrick and Beatrice (Wetterau) Rowehl. On May 20, 1950, he married Bertha M. (née James) in Hicksville.

Formerly of Middle Island, he was an ex-chief (1966 to 1967) and former commissioner of Middle Island Fire Department and a member of Mattituck Fire Department.

He served on the Long Island Farm Bureau board of directors and was the 1991 Long Island Farm Bureau-Farmer “Citizen of the Year.” He also served on the New York Farm Bureau Committee and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service.

Predeceased by his wife Bertha M. Rowehl on Feb. 6, 2008, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Jean and Bill Roberson, James and Rebecca Rowehl, John and Jane Rowehl, Susan and Carl Krieg, Marie and Serge Desjardins and Karen Rowehl and Pete Raynor; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandsons.

The family received visitors Dec. 17 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where firematic and funeral services took place. Interment was private and took place at the Rowehl Family Plot at Plain Lawn Cemetery in Hicksville.

Diane R. Miller

Diane R. (Rolle) Miller of Aquebogue died suddenly Dec. 16 at the age of 62. 

She was born Feb. 18, 1953, in Riverhead and attended St. John’s Elementary and Mercy High School in Riverhead. She received an associate degree from Virginia Intermont College in fashion merchandising.

After college she began working for Saks Fifth Avenue in Southampton as a seamstress and worked her way through the ranks to become the operations manager for many different stores throughout the United States including Cleveland, Dallas and Stamford, Conn., to name a few.

She met her husband Kenneth Miller in Dallas in 1986. They met at Addison Airport in Texas while Diane was flying with her brother, Mark Rolle. Diane learned to fly at the age of 17 and received her student pilot license while in high school. Diane and Mark got their love of flying from their father, Walter Rolle. Ken is also a pilot and certified aircraft mechanic. Diane and Ken owned an airplane that they built and flew throughout the United States to visit friends and family as far away as California. So aviation was an important part of her life.

Diane left Saks Fifth Avenue when new ownership took over in 1993 and returned to Riverhead to work in the family business. She kept her father and brother in line until Rolle Brothers closed in 2005. Diane went back into the aviation business and worked at Mattituck Aviation until it closed in 2010. In addition Diane worked part-time at East End Sporting Goods. Diane then went back to work into the retail business and after volunteering for East End Hospice for many years, became manager of the hospice thrift shop, where she worked until her death.

Diane always had a love for cats. From the time she was a child, she was never without one or two cats in her home. Diane also spent many years in the flower gardens around her house.

Predeceased by her mother Jean (Hutchinson) Rolle in 1981 and her father, Walter Rolle in 2009; Diane will be missed by her husband; her brother Mark and his wife, Kay; her nephews, Matthew and Mark Rolle and all her friends.

The family will receive visitors Monday, Dec. 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Saint John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will take place at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Gasper J. “Gabby” Pisacano of Riverhead, formerly of Jamesport and Huntington, died Dec. 18. He was 85.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, Dec. 22, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23. Interment with U.S. Marine Corps honors will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Janet Luce

Janet (Manitta) Luce of Riverhead passed away Dec. 17 at Brookhaven Hospital. She was 64.

Janet was born to Peter Manitta and Edith Budzich in Port Jefferson Sept. 4, 1951. She attended Newfield High School and married John Luce in 1968.

Mrs. Luce was an employee of Riverhead Central School District for 34 years, where she took pride in cooking and serving school lunches to hundreds of children.

Mrs. Luce will be remembered by her loved ones for her love of cooking.

Predeceased by her parents, Mrs. Luce is survived by her husband, John and sister Joyce Boone of Westhampton Beach. Mrs. Luce is also survived by her son, Keith and his wife Marta (née Marosz) and their two children, Christopher and Elisabeth; her daughter, Sarah Conrad (née Luce) and her husband Marc Conrad and their two children, Ava and Reid; and her youngest daughter; Katelyn and her fiance Taylor Knapp.

A memorial will take place as a later date.

Arrangements were entrusted to Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Hedwig Kozak

Hedwig Kozak of Riverhead died Dec. 18 at Peconic Bay Skilled Nursing Facility in Riverhead. She was 88. 

She was the daughter of Frank and Justina (Ruskowski) Doroski.

Ms. Kozak was a farmer for Kozak Farms in Riverhead. Family said she loved to maintain her yard, keeping it in perfect condition.

Predeceased by her husband, Frank, in 2013, Ms. Kozak is survived by her sons, Robert and Thomas, of Riverhead, Frank, of Fairfield, Conn., and Mark of Wading River; her siblings, Bertha Wilcenski of Riverhead, Konrad Doroski of Aquebogue, Irene Zlatniski of Aquebogue and Albina Sujecki of Calverton; and eight grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, Dec. 22 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will take place at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Cemetery in Riverhead.

Charles D. Sidorowicz

Charles D. Sidorowicz, a long time resident of Mattituck, passed away peacefully at home on Dec. 17, 2015 with his wife at his side. He was 71.

He served his country during the Vietnam War in the Armed Services. In 1974 he moved to Mattituck and opened American Furniture Stripping in Laurel. After selling that business he became a commercial fisherman. Throughout the years he plied the waters of Long Island Sound for lobsters and Peconic Bay for scallops. After 26 years of commercial fishing, he spent the following 13 years as the boat captain on a 60 foot DeFever trawler, which he rebuilt.

Charles was an avid Alpine and Nordic skier, snowboarder and golfer. He also enjoyed snowshoeing, sailing and the companionship of his many golden retrievers over his lifetime. He shared his passion of the outdoors with his wife of 41 years, Charle.

The family will receive friends on Monday, Dec. 21, from 9 to 10 a.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Funeral services will follow at 10 a.m. Interment with U.S. Army honors, will immediately follow the service at St. Patrick’s R.C. Cemetery in Huntington.

Memorial donations to East End Hospice or North Fork Animal Welfare League would be appreciated.

Henry F. Grodski

Riverhead resident Henry F. Grodski, formerly of Cutchogue,  died Dec. 17, 2015. He was 94.

He was born in Brooklyn April 16, 1921, to Lucjan and Stanislawa (Mankiewicz) Grodski.

Mr. Grodski later married Ida (née Zazecki) and together they made their home in Cutchogue and Gardners, Pa., for many years. They returned to the North Fork and settled in Riverhead. Ida died March 13, 2011.

Mr. Grodski had been a farmer with Joseph Krupski Farms in Cutchogue.

Surviving are five children: Stella Manna of Brooklyn, Henry, of Pennsylvania, Thomas, of Nevada, David, of East Quogue and Dennis, of North Carolina; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Interment will be at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Funeral arrangements were in the care of DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.

Catherine Mary Schlick

Catherine Mary Schlick of Greenport died Dec. 9, 2015 in Greenport. The former longtime Hicksville resident was 94.

She was the aunt of Joseph Schlick and loving cousin of her godson, William Ryan, Kathleen DiPierro, Peggy Dykes, Eileen Finter, Rosemary Ryan, Patricia Caporale and Dorothy Stengele.

The family received visitors Dec. 11 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial followed at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church in Wading River. The Reverend John J. Barrett officiated. Interment was at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury with prayers by Deacon Fred Finter.

Former Aquebogue resident Donald P. Zlatniski of Center Moriches died Dec. 21 in Center Moriches. He was 55.

Thomas D’Eletto

Thomas D’Eletto, 57, died at approximately 5:30 a.m. on December 23, 2015 from injuries sustained in a head-on collision on Sunrise Highway. He was on his way to work. 

Thomas D’Eletto was born in Huntington Hospital May 3, 1958, to Ida and Attilio D’Eletto of Northport. He worked as a civil engineering inspector for Dvirka & Bartilucci, an engineering firm located in Woodbury.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Kathleen; his son, Michael D’Eletto and daughter, Christina Wesnofske; father, Attilio D’Eletto and mother, Ida D’Eletto; brothers, Steven and Robert D’Eletto, and sister, Donna Condon, and one granddaughter, Grace Wesnofske. He is preceded in death by his second son, Daniel D’Eletto, who passed at the age of 13.

Thomas is remembered as a man who would always put the needs of his family members before his own. He recognized the value of spending time with those he loved; he understood that life is precious and that we should not waste a single moment.

Services will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, at McLaughlin-Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29,  at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Burial services will be continued at the St. Isidore’s Cemetery immediately following the mass.

Anne M. Griffin of Riverhead died Dec. 28 at Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern, N.C. She was 100. 

The daughter of Martha (Kaun) and John Stravinskas, she was born Feb. 26, 1915, in Mattituck.

Family members said she had worked as a secretary.

Predeceased by her husband, Russell Griffin in 1998, Anne is survived by her daughters, Maureen Seaman of Riverhead and Lorraine Griffin of North Carolina; her grandchildren, Cheryl (Brian) Mullins and Jeffrey (Diahann) Seaman and her great-grandchildren, Jake and Anna Mullins and Daniel Seaman.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Jan. 1, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, at Saint John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will take place at Jamesport Cemetery.

Patricia Ann Vories, also known as “Trish,”of Shirley, New York was born June 21, 1954. Patricia returned to her heavenly home Dec. 17, 2015, after a valiant battle with heart disease. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace. 

Born and raised on Long Island, Patricia attended Greenport High School in Greenport. After graduation she moved to New York City where she met and married Will Roger Vories in 1979. She attended Medgar Evers College, and then went on to enroll in Wilfred Beauty Academy where she received a license in cosmetology. Patricia was later on employed by Estée Lauder as a line coordinator where she worked until her retirement.

Patricia was loving, caring, determined, and just a go-getter at heart. Anyone who know her would say “Trish don’t play”. She was a devoted daughter, mother, grandmother and sister. She will be greatly missed.

She leaves to cherish her memory; her mother Earline Hepburn of Greenport; her five daughters and two sons, Celeste Vories of Mastic, Antionette Brown of Coram, Natasha Brown of Shirley, Justin and Tramell Shelby of Centereach; six grandchildren Lauryn Vories, Zaria Alston, Zyaire Jenkins, Haiden Brown, Roy Whitfield Jr. III and Maki Haynes, Jr. She was redeceased by her sister Darlene Jackson and is survived by five sisters, Sarah Hill, Geraldine Carter, Sabrina Crenshaw, Christine and Mary Shelby; five brothers, Hanson and James Postwaite, Larry Shelby, Nathaniel Beckwith, Charles Shelby, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Homegoing services were held Dec. 28 at Clinton Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church in Greenport. Interment was in Calverton National Cemetery. The Rev. Nathaniel Heyward Sr. officiated.

DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold assisted the family.

Richard W. Lash

Richard W. Lash of Jamesport died at Peconic Bay Medical Center Dec. 27, 2015. He was 60. 

Mr. Lash was born in Bay Shore Nov. 5, 1955, to Richard M. and Caroline (Chapin) Lash.

Following graduation from West Islip High School and New York State Maritime College, he was a tug boat captain for various employers for seventeen years and a member of Local 333- United Marine Division and the International Longshoremen’s Association.

He is survived by his siblings, Debora Masso, Amy Mahaffey and Andrew, Bill, Brian and Don Lash.

DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck assisted the family.

Carl Andrew Christianson

Carl Andrew Christianson, 91, died Dec. 31, 2015 at Kendal-Crosslands, Kennett Square, Pa. where he and his wife Marjorie have resided since 2003.

He was born Feb. 18, 1924, in Bronx, NY, the son of Philip A. and Gladys Sophie (Nilson) Christianson and graduated from Brooklyn Polytechnic High School. He was married Feb. 4, 1945 to Marjorie Louise Hellstom, the love of his life, at Christ Church in Oyster Bay, NY.

At the time of their wedding, Carl was serving in the U.S. Navy and deployed soon after their marriage. Shortly after his return to New York after World War II, Carl and Marjorie made their home in Clifton, NJ., with their son Carl and celebrated the addition of sons, Robert Andrew, Thomas Edward and Ernest Philip to their family.

Carl was employed by Federal Telecommunications Labs, while living in New Jersey. The family moved to Chester, Conn., in 1955 where they created a home along the Connecticut River. While there, Carl worked at Pratt Reed in Ivoryton, Conn., designing piano actions which were patented as well.

In 1960, Carl and family moved to Southold, where they enjoyed family life on Cedar Beach. Carl was employed by Brookhaven National Lab until his retirement in 1989. At the pinnacle of his work life, Carl was heavily involved with the Isabel Project, traveling both nationally and internationally, often accompanied by Marjorie.

Carl and Marjorie enjoyed a rich retirement together, traveling and exploring much of the country and visiting friends and family along the way. Carl and Marjorie particularly enjoyed providing child care for all their grandchildren. They visited their college student grandchildren at their various campuses, enjoying all the details over a great meal. Carl enjoyed many hobbies, some of which were sailing and maintaining his old wooden sailboat, model railroading, working on cars and just about any type of woodworking project. In recent years Carl and Marjorie enjoyed country-line dancing and Scottish dancing.

Carl is survived by his wife of nearly 71 years, Marjorie; three sons Robert, and wife, Joan of Greenville, N.C., Thomas, and his wife Beverly of New Suffolk, Ernest, and his wife Kathleen of Essex Junction, Vt., and daughter-in-law Michaela Christianson of Woodland Park, Colo. He was predeceased by his son, Carl Arthur Christianson. He was the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren, Andrew, Arthur, Heidi (Jordan), David, Damon, Shawn and Kyle Christianson. He delighted in his great grandchildren Bethany and Natalie Jordan and Carl David, Oscar and Margaret Christianson. Carl was predeceased by sisters, Alma Beaman, Phyllis (Pratt) Koepke and Joan Matz and their spouses. Carl is survived by many cousins.

The family will receive visitors beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Remembrances will be shared at noon. Interment, with U.S. Navy honors, will follow at First Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Southold

Memorial donations may be made in Carl’s memory to the American Cancer Society.

Arnold A. Anderson Jr.

Former Riverhead resident Arnold A. Anderson Jr., 67, of Land O’ Lakes, Fla. passed away Dec. 29, 2015. 

He was born in Brooklyn and moved to Florida in 1971. He worked for UPS and retired with ABF Freight.

Arnold enjoyed showing his 1957 Ford at car shows and fishing. He was an avid Bucs fan.

He is survived by his son, Keith and his wife, Tina; his daughters, Debra Armstrong and her husband, Jay, and Kimberly Ford and her husband, George; his brother, Stewart Anderson and his wife, Laura; four grandchildren, Katie, Jayson, Mason, and George; and one great-grandson, Cayden.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at Loyless Funeral Home in Land O’ Lakes.
