Vincent Louis Tirelli

Vincent Louis Tirelli of Southold died peacefully at his home with his loving family surrounding him May 23, 2016. He was 84 years old.

He was born on Oct. 25, 1931, in Bronx, N.Y., to Michael and Irene (Garzilli) Tirelli. He married his beloved wife of 63 years, Louise (LaFalcia), on April 11, 1953.

Vincent served as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Buckner from 1951 to 1955. Upon his discharge, he returned to New York and worked as a Union Marble setter, helping put the marble facades on many buildings in and around Manhattan. He joined the Fire Department of New York in 1962, serving with Engine 88 and as an inspector in District Office 7, both in the Bronx, until his retirement.

After his retirement in 1976, Vinny and his family moved to Southold, where he began a 30-year career as owner/operator of Vincent Tirelli Marble and Tile Company. He was an active member of the Southold Kiwanis, rising to the role of president. He was a lifelong New York Yankees and New York Giants fan.

In addition to his wife, Vinny is survived by his sister, Marie Bernasconi (Bruce) of West Nyack; two daughters, Laura Witek (Tony) of Ridgefield, Conn., and Valerie Tirelli Hallock of Southold; two sons, Vincent (Kristin) of Mattituck and Robert (Sherry) of Middleton, Mass. Also surviving are his nine beloved grandchildren, Katelyn Ettenger (Will), Evan Witek (Maggie), Vincent M. Tirelli (Sara), Sarah, Matthew and Brian Hallock, Olivia and Samantha Tirelli and Nicole Seay; and four great-grandchildren, Sean and Hanna Tirelli, Sydney Ettenger and Jordan Poole; as well as many loving nieces, nephews and cousins in the United States, Italy and Belgium. In addition to his parents, Michael and Irene, he was predeceased by two brothers, Anthony and Angelo.

He was much loved by many and will be remembered for his engaging nature, zest for life, witty repartee and the endless love and devotion he had for his family.

The family will be receiving visitors Thursday, May 26, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. A Mass of Christian Burial with military and fire department honors will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 27, at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold, with interment to follow at the church cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice or Southold Fire Department Rescue Squad.

Richard X. Park

Richard X. Park, 80, formerly of Aquebogue, passed April 7, 2016, at his home in Fair Play, S.C. after his battle with cancer. 

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary (Rolle) Park; his daughters, Mary Clare Park, Ann M. Park and Patricia E. Wagner; his son, Richard A. Park; five grandchildren; nieces and nephews; many close friends and his beloved dog, Turk.

He was born in 1935 to Robert and Claire Park of Philadelphia. Richard completed West Catholic Boy High School in 1952 and then honorably served his country in the U.S. Air Force and then later in the Air Force Reserves.

Richard met the love of his life, Mary Rolle while on military leave on the east end of Long Island. The two married on April 12, 1958, and later settled in Mary’s home town of Riverhead to raise their children in the home he built with his own two hands. He retired from LILCO, after over 30 years as a line supervisor. He was a CPR instructor and a former local volunteer fireman. He also served on the Riverhead Town Assessors board for several years.

Richard had a passion for sports, photography and cooking. He was a basketball referee and the secretary-treasure for and life member of IABBO board 40 and was one of the founding members of the annual IABBO Holiday Classic basketball tournament in Southampton. He dabbled in golf; was a BBQ chef for St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead; a Riverhead Little League baseball coach for the Rotary and an honorary Riverhead varsity football coach/photographer/pre-game spaghetti dinner chef.

A funeral Mass was conducted in South Carolina April 18. A local memorial Mass will be held for him June 11, 2016 at 9:30am, at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead for his northern friends and family pay their respects.

Stephen James Punda Jr.

Former Riverhead resident Stephen James Punda Jr. of Tallahassee, Fla. died  May 23, at Big Bend Hospice House in Tallahassee. He was 66. 

A son of Stephen James Punda Sr. and Mary Krukowski Punda, he was born April 21, 1950, in Riverhead.

Mr. Punda worked at the North Florida Fairgrounds for many years and also enjoyed ringing the bell for the Salvation Army for many years during the Christmas season. Family members said he was a faithful parishoner at St. Louis Catholic Church and was a 4th degree Knight with Knights of Columbus.

Predeceased by his father and his brother, David Alan Punda, Mr. Punda is survived by his mother; his brothers, Joseph and Thomas, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial visitation will take place Thursday, June 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 3, at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church Cemetery in Riverhead.

Memorial donations may be made to Big Bend Hospice or the Salvation Army.

Joseph B. Moisa

Joseph B. Moisa of Mattituck died Saturday, May 28, at the Hampton Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Southampton. He was 91 years old. 

He was born in East Marion, Feb. 3, 1925, to John and Apolonia Moisa and attended Mattituck High School.

Joe later served in the U.S. Army. Upon his return, he enjoyed a long career as the owner of Hansen’s Garage in Mattituck.

He was a past member of the Mattituck Fire Department and Mattituck Lions Club.

In his spare time, he enjoyed racing, working on the race car owned by Ernie Wilsberg of Mattituck.

Surviving is his wife Constance (née Hansen); a son Joseph B. Moisa, Jr. (Catherine) of Mattituck; two sisters Helen Filla and Sophie Tyte of Riverhead; four grandchildren Heather, Casey, David (Katelynn) and Joseph Moisa, III and four great-grandchildren Chloe Brown, twins Jacob and Tyler Malkash and Jackson Moisa.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, May 31, from 3 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, officiated by Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Nellie Truskolaski

Nellie Truskolaski of Aquebogue died at her home May 24, 2016, at the age of 83. 

She was born Nov. 9, 1932, and was raised by her grandparents in Aquebogue.

Nellie later married Edward Truskolaski at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue. For 27 years, she was a school bus driver for the Riverhead Central School District.

She attended St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead and was a member of the RPIC Ladies Auxiliary. In her free time she enjoyed crocheting.

Predeceased by her husband Edward Truskolaski, she is survived by her son Edward (Irene) Truskolaski of Westhampton.

Friends may call Tuesday, May 31, from 4 to 8 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church, officiated by Father Mariusz Gorazd.

Anita J. Fiore of Mattituck died Saturday, May 28, at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue. She was 69 years old.

She was born in New York City Oct. 23, 1946, to Rosaria J. (née Buttitta) and Domenico Cosolito and raised in Greenwich Village. The family moved to Long Island when Anita was a teenager and settled in West Babylon.

A graduate of West Babylon High School, Anita moved to Mattituck in 1971.
For many years, she worked at the 7-Eleven stores in Cutchogue and Southold. In more recent years, she was a home health aide with East End Hospice.

In her leisure time, she enjoyed celebrity gossip and was an avid reader of the Star and Enquirer. She also enjoyed cooking, especially Italian food.

She is survived by two daughters, Sheryl Ann Fiore of Patchogue and Danielle (Ned) Grathwohl of Mattituck; two granddaughters, Skyler and Macie Grathwohl and her fiancé, Richard Gibbs. She was predeceased by her brother, Dennis Cosolito.

Family members said her granddaughters were everything.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 1, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m.Thursday, June 2, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Cutchogue Cemetery.

Memorial donations to East End Hospice would be appreciated.

Robert W. Lehmann

Robert W. Lehmann

Robert W. Lehmann of Baiting Hollow passed away May 22 at the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook. He was 92 years old.

Mr. Lehmann was born in Queens County, N.Y. to Frederick and Dorothy (Kunzer) Lehmann on March 18, 1924.

He served honorably in the U.S. Army in North Africa and Italy during World War II. Reported MIA during the Battle of Anzio, a year later he was later identified as a POW by the Red Cross.

A decorated policeman and detective with the New York City Police Department he retired after 21 years. He then worked as an insurance investigator. In his leisure time, he enjoyed surf fishing, landscaping, painting, the theater and listening to jazz music.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years Irma (née Morley) Lehmann and three children, Robert of Baiting Hollow, James of Maryland, Marlene of Florida; his brother Frederick; a niece Lori; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service and inurnment with U.S. Army honors will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, at Calverton National Cemetery.

Longtime Riverhead resident Margret Ried died May 27 at her home. She was 76. 

The daughter of Karl and Adele Klocker, she was born April 19, 1940, in Germany.

Ms. Ried worked as a bookkeeper for Cheshire Electric. Her husband Walter, who predeceased her in 2001, previously worked for Times Review Media Group.

Family members said she enjoyed gardening and painting.

In addition to her husband, Ms. Ried was also predeceased by her daughter, Charlotte “Lottie” in 2008. She is survived by her son, Michael, of East Quogue and one grandchild.

Cremation was private.

Arrangements were in the care of McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.


Betty Jane Kalin

Betty Jane Kalin, a former resident of Greenport, died at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Mattituck on May 30, 2016. She was 89 years old. 

She was born Nov. 16, 1926, to James and Emily Albin in Mattituck and was graduated from Mattituck High School in 1945 and attended Brown’s Business School.

Betty worked for the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Riverhead before her marriage to Herbert Kalin of Greenport on June 18, 1950. After her husband’s death, she worked for Greenport Village as a secretary and at Holy Trinity Church as a teacher’s aide.

She resided in Greenport from 1950 to 2009 when she moved in to the home of her daughter and son-in-law. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles and oil painting until she was diagnosed with macular degeneration in the late 1980s.

Betty was a member of Greenport United Methodist Church. In later years, she enjoyed meeting with the Blind and Sighted Group in Aquebogue and the VIP Group in Peconic.

Predeceased by her husband Herb who was murdered in 1981; she is survived by her children: Jim (Carol) of Greenport, Lew (Irene) Kalin of Milan, Ohio, Susan Zaborowski of Riverhead and Betsy (Rich) Perkins of Mattituck. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, June 2, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 3, at Mattituck Presbyterian Church. Caren Heacock, Pastoral Associate will officiate. Interment will be in the Sterling Cemetery in Greenport.

Gwendolyn M. Branch of Riverhead died June 1 at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. She was 69. 

The daughter of Bernice (Holmes) and Roy Mack Sr., she was born Feb. 17, 1947, in Glennville, Ga. and had earned a master’s degree.

Ms. Branch was a professor at Suffolk County Community College in Riverhead. She was instrumental in implementing the Harry Project, to provide housing for Harry Lewis, a Greenport resident and SCCC student with cerebral palsy.

Ms. Branch is survived by her husband, James Otis Branch; her sons, Dwayne and Michael; her brothers, Roy Mack Jr. and Gregory Mack; her sisters, Charlene Crump, Cheryl Atkins and Cynde Mack and one grandchild.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, June 5, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, June 6, at First Baptist Church of Riverhead, officiated by the Revs. Charles Coverdale and Cynthia Liggon.

Charles J. Conklin

Charles J. Conklin of Riverhead died May 31 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 71.

The son of Charles and Mary Conklin, he was born July 11, 1944, in Glen Cove and attended Oyster Bay High School.

Mr. Conklin served in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1963. He worked as a carpenter for Classic Carpentry in Mattituck.

Family members said he enjoyed dogs and golf.

Mr. Conklin is survived by his wife, Patricia (née Yberg) and his daughter, Lisa Boland-Conklin.

A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, June 6, at Calverton National Cemetery.

Arrangements were in the care of Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.

Emily Marie Grosiak

Emily Marie Grosiak of Southold died at home June 2. She was 92 years old.

She was born in Brooklyn, on May 20, 1924, to George and Mary Cottrell and raised in the Williamsburg section.

On June 30, 1946, she married Anthony Grosiak and together they made their home in Middle Village. In 1975, Ms. Grosiak moved to their ‘get-away’ home in New Fairfield, Conn. where she was active in the New Fairfield Senior Center.

Family said Ms. Grosiak enjoyed crocheting and listening to audio books.

Predeceased by her husband Anthony in 1988; she is survived by her children, Richard, of Holmdel, N.J., Barbara, of Southold, Mary, of Peconic and Christine Moser of South Britain, Conn.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two daughters, Margaret Grosiak of Danbury, Conn. and Patricia Roehrig of Dix Hills.

The family received visitors June 4 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church, officiated by Father Peter Garry.

Evelyn D. Nelson

Evelyn D. Nelson of Southold died Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at the Kanas Center for Hospice Care in Quiogue. She was 98 years old.

Mrs. Nelson was born in Brooklyn on Nov. 24, 1917, to John and Ida Matilda (née Savio) Lunde.

Formerly of Port Washington, she had been a resident of Southold for the past 40 years. Locally, she was a member of the Southold United Methodist Church and a home health aide.

Mrs. Nelson is survived by two children, Joyce of Florida and Jeffrey of Jamesport; two grandsons, Mark and Christopher and three great-grandchildren, Connor, Evie and Micah.

Calling hours and funeral services were held June 5 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, with Reverend Lorraine DeArmitt officiating. Entombment was at Pinelawn Memorial Park.

William J. Smith

William J. Smith of Southold died at home June 2, 2016. He was 67.

He was born Nov. 16, 1948, in Bay Shore to Johanna (Mulder) and Edwin A. Smith.

From 1967 to 1971, Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Upon his honorable discharge, he became involved in the family’s fuel oil business, Long Island Reliable in Lindenhurst, and then Burt’s Reliable in Southold.

More recently, Mr. Smith was the proprietor of Fisherman’s Rest in Cutchogue.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Surozenski Smith.

Services will be private.

Alma Rose Setek

Alma Rose Setek, formerly of Riverhead, passed away peacefully June 4, 2016, at her home in Indialantic, Fla., with her daughters at her bedside. 

Alma was born Nov. 12, 1929, to George and Mildred (Reeves) Lucas. She graduated from Westhampton Beach High School and worked at the U. S. Post Office before getting married to William R. Brown and raising her three daughters.

In 1962 Alma married Louis Setek of Riverhead where together they ran their business, Riverhead Lanes. They enjoyed boating and fishing on their boat the “Alma Lou.” Alma loved traveling and cruising and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and many friends.

In 1987 Alma and Louis retired to Florida where she was active in her church, Calvery Chapel, in Melbourne, Fla. She volunteered her time both at her church and the American Cancer Society. Her hobbies were crocheting, knitting, gardening and cooking.

Predeceased by her husband, Louis Setek, and her daughter, Marilyn G. McBurnie, she is survived by her daughters, Barbara Brown of Indialantic and Wendy Kukla of Jamesport, and her son-in-law, James McBurnie of Riverhead. Also surviving are her seven grandchildren, Matthew W. (Jackie) Kukla, Alicia (John) Lynch, Justin and Victoria San Andres, James McBurnie, Michelle Vail and Shana (Bruce) Rumph; and her five great grandchildren Shawn McBurnie, Amanda and Adam Vail, and Christopher and Madison Rumph.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, June 9, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 10, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Good Ground Cemetery in Hampton Bays.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

The daughter of Mary (Kossluszko) and Edward Guyer, she was born March 26, 1925, in Riverhead.

Predeceased by her husband, Ellis Tremski in 2009, she is survived by her nieces, Debra A. Oberhausen, Nancy Conforti, Joanne Tenke and Patricia Jacobs; her sisters, Dorothy Rogers and May Wiggington and her nephew, William Rogers.

Russell L. Salerno of Mattituck passed away June 8, 2016. He was 67 years old.

Born in Brooklyn in 1948 to Lucy and Philip Salerno, he was the devoted husband of Barbara.

Russ served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Upon his honorable discharge, he became self-employed as the owner and manager of rental properties in New York and Long Island.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, June 12, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, June 13, at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck.
