Thelma L. Parker

Thelma L. Parker of Riverhead died Aug. 29 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She was 87. 

The daughter of Armsted and Louise (Jones) Woodson, she was born May 25, 1929, in Riverhead and was a homemaker.

Predeceased by her husband Charles in 2012, Ms. Parker is survived by her daughter, Debra, of Riverhead; her son, Charles, of Germany; her siblings, John, James and Geraldine Woodson, all of Riverhead and Carol Philips of Georgia and one grandchild.

The family will receive visitors Saturday, Sept. 3, from 10 to 11 a.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead, followed by an 11 a.m. funeral service at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Riverhead Cemetery.

 

 


Martin Albanese

Riverhead resident Martin Albanese, formerly a longtime resident of Hampton Bays, died Aug. 31 at his home. He was 72. 

The son of Victor and Rose Albanese, he was born Feb. 20, 1944, in Manhattan.

Mr. Albanese served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1965. He worked as a route salesman for Pepsi and driver-technician for Medenhall Fuel.

Family members said Mr. Albanese enjoyed golfing and being in a bowling league at Wildwood Lanes.

Mr. Albanese is survived by his wife, Lucille, of Riverhead; his children, Peter, of Boston and Gina, of Manhattan; his sisters, Marie Stuppiello and Tina Wiebke and two grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Sept. 1, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice.

 

C. John Simon

C. John Simon, age 82, passed away at his home in Riverhead on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016. 

He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Griffing Smith Simon of Riverhead; beloved children, Peter J. Simon of Danbury, Conn., Nan Simon of Monmouth Beach, N.J., Ellen Simon of West Bath, Maine and stepdaughter, Lynne Wheeler of Morton, N.Y.. He was the cherished grandfather of Christopher Catanese, Corey Catanese, Rebecca Simon and stepgrandson, David Wheeler; dear brother to Robert K. Simon of Reidsville, N.C., Virginia Simon Koonts of Charleston, S.C. and Elizabeth Simon Mead of Peconic.

John was a graduate of Southold High School and attended Villanova University. He served as a member of Southold Fire Department and on the Southold school board. He founded and built John Simon Produce – a successful produce company with offices in three states.

He was an avid skier, golfer and world traveler. Despite suffering from Parkinson’s disease for many years, he maintained a positive attitude and continued to live a full and active life until in recent months, as the disease proved too much for his body and will to withstand. By the family he has left behind, he is remembered as being caring, kind and always supportive. Even in his last days his concern was how he could help his loved ones. We’ll miss him greatly.

The family received visitors Sept. 5 at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. A Mass of Christian burial was held Sept. 6 at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold. Interment followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cutchogue.

In memory of John, the family kindly suggests contributions to the American Parkinson Disease Association, 135 Parkinson Ave., Staten Island, NY 10305.

Anthony I. Ruskowski Jr.

Anthony I Ruskowski Jr. of Calverton died Aug. 24 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 57. 

The son of Anthony Ruskowski and Patricia Schuyler he was born Oct. 15, 1958, in Riverhead. He graduated from Riverhead High School in 1977.

Anthony served in the U.S. Marine Corps. from 1977 to 1981. He was a partner and financial manager at R & R Farms of Suffolk.

Anthony enjoyed gardening, investing, building, traveling and reading.

A loving son and brother, Anthony was an inspiration to family members. He had a big heart and was always wanting to help others without wanting recognition. He will be missed.

Anthony is survived by his mother, Patricia Schuyler of Virginia; his father, Anthony Ruskowski Sr. of Riverhead; his stepfather, George Schuyler of Virginia and his sisters Lisa Ruskowski of Virginia and Sharon Freeman of Florida.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Sept. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Teddy Antone Kujawski Jr.

Former Greenport resident Teddy Antone Kujawski Jr. of Riverhead died Sept. 1 in Greenport. He was 60.

The son of Emma (Smith) and Ted Antone Kujawski Sr., he was born Sept. 16, 1955, in Greenport.

On June 8, 2013, he married Stephanie Frost at Mattituck Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Kujawski attended college, served in the U.S. Army and worked at C-Cat Electrician in Mattituck, before going out on disability three years ago. He was a member of the Junior Order of Mechanics.

Predeceased by his parents, Mr. Kujawski is survived by his wife, Stephanie Frost-Kujawski of Riverhead; his son, Anthony, of Arizona and his brothers, Bob Smith of Maryland, Peter, of Florida and James, of Southampton. He was also predeceased by his brother, John.

A funeral service will take place at noon, Friday, Sept. 16, at Mattituck Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donors choosing.

Arrangements were in the care of Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.

Francine M. Smith

Francine M. Smith of Riverhead died Aug. 31 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She was 51. 

The daughter of Frank and Dolores Bialczak, she was born March 9, 1965, in Bethpage. She married Jack Smith in 1998.

Ms. Smith worked at North Fork Bank in Mattituck.

Family members she enjoyed gardening, crime novels and doing jigsaw puzzles.

Predeceased by her parents she is survived by her husband; her brother, Mark Bialczak of Syracuse, N.Y. and her sister, Dory Daly of Malverne.

A memorial service took place Sept. 4 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Norma Lee Hagler

Mrs. Norma Lee “Norm” Hagler (née Bell) died Thursday, Aug. 25, in Charlotte, N.C., at the age of 87.

Norm is survived by her husband, Howard; her children, Dan, Matt, David and Jane and her grandchildren, Tyler, Max, Shaye, Kylie, Claire, Jack, Molly, Michael and Alyssa. She was preceded in death by her brother, Karl Bell, and sister, Jean Brooks.
Norm was born April 8, 1929, in Fairborn, Ohio, to Cecil and Birdella Bell. She attended Wittenberg University and taught first grade for several years. She married Howard Hagler, the love of her life, in 1954.

Norm was an accomplished athlete in her youth, participating in inter-club golf tournaments in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., area during their residence there. She was an abstract artist and her oil paintings still hang in the homes of her family members.

Norm was a loving, devoted wife and mother, and was always the life of the party.

A private celebration to honor her life is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 9, at Cypress of Charlotte.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region.

Frank Doka, resident of Baiting Hollow, went home to be with the Lord Sept. 12, at the age of 81.

He was the devoted husband of Muriel, the loving father of Frank, Debra and Donna and the cherished grandfather of Tyrone, Michael, Rhiannon, Lyndon, T.J.,  and Deanna.

Kathleen Troyan

Family and friends said goodbye to Kathleen “Kay” Troyan after she passed away Sept. 10 after a short illness.

Kay worked at New York Telephone Company for many years, and retired from there. She enjoyed her retirement to the fullest.

Kay raised orchids in her pride and joy greenhouse, which was always filled with blooming flowers, especially during the winter months.

Kay and her husband Paul, who passed away a few years ago, traveled all over the country together and sailed many cruises. Both of them loved to travel and they made many new friends on their trips.

Kay leaves behind two daughters, Cheryl Troyan Pelis, and Linda White; three grandchildren, Jamie Pelis, Rob Pelis and Holly White and two great grandchildren, Julia and Aiden Pelis.

Services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 13, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. A prayer service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, at the funeral home

Donations to Kent Animal Shelter in Kay’s name would be welcomed.

Dawn G. Domanick of Calverton died Sept. 11. She was 58. 

The daughter of Audrey (Stowe) and Werner Lang, she was born March 3, 1958, in England and was a high school graduate.

Ms. Domanick worked as a medical office manager at Stony Brook University Hospital.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; her sons, John and Kevin; her brothers, Mark and Gary Lang and her sister, Ruth Turitz.

Howard H. Jewett

Howard H. Jewett of Mattituck and formerly of Manorville died at Acadia Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation Sept. 12, 2016. He was 98.

He was born Dec. 16, 1917, in Ames, Iowa to Albert and Sophie (Halsey) Jewett.

On Dec. 2, 1945, he married the former Margaret Luella Johnston. They lived in Queens, West Islip, East Moriches and Manorville before moving to the North Fork in 1999.

Mr. Jewett had been a foreman in plant engineering for Brookhaven National Lab.

Family members said he and his wife loved to travel in their motor home and have visited destinations throughout the south and west. His other passion was basket weaving.

Predeceased by his wife Margaret in 2002, he leaves his children, Susan J. and her husband Walter H. Shaffer of Mattituck and Howard J. Jewett of Brookfield, N.Y.

The family will receive visitor Friday, Sept. 16, from 1 to 1:30 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, with funeral services following at 1:30 p.m. Interment with U.S. Navy honors will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Robert Entenmann, founder of Martha Clara Vineyards, dies at 88

Robert Entenmann, longtime executive of Entenmann’s Bakery in Bay Shore and founder of Martha Clara Vineyards in Riverhead, died Thursday in Lauderdale by the Sea, Fla. He was 88.

Predeceased by his brother, William Entenmann III, Mr. Entenmann is survived by his children, Jacqueline and Robert; his brother, Charles; and his former wife, Mary.

The family will receive visitors Monday, Sept. 19, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Overton Funeral Home, 172 Main Street in Islip, with Bay Shore Firematic Services at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Islip. Interment to follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Bay Shore.

Patricia F. (Essay) Kaelin of Riverhead died Sept. 16. She was 84. 

Patricia was a longtime member of the Jamesport Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

She was the loving wife of Daniel Kaelin for 63 wonderful years; the cherished mother of Daniel A. Kaelin, Denise A. Voight, Patrick M. Kaelin, Gregory A. Kaelin and Leslie Zavelsky and the adored grandmother to 26 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Theresa M. Johnson of Riverhead died Sept. 19. at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She was 85. 

The daughter of Pearl (Skipwith) and Jurod Brown, Ms. Johnson was born Aug. 12, 1931.

Ms. Johnson graduated from high school and worked as a saleswoman at Ivans Shore Store in Riverhead.

She is survived by her husband, Theodore; her sons, Wayne, Curtis and Wilburn; her daughter, Nancy; her sisters, Edith Jackson, Doris Meyers, Sarah Mayo, Judy Barlow and Mary Harris; her brothers, Clifford and Leroy Brown; her grandchildren, Tré Johnson, Jeremy Johnson and Chris Smalls; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Sept. 22, from 10 to 10:30 a.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. A prayer service will follow at 11 a.m. at Calverton National Cemetery.

Evelyn Wylie

Evelyn Wylie of Riverhead, formerly of Sayville, passed away Sept. 9. She was 88 years old.

Born March 19, 1928, in Queens, she graduated from Oceanside High School and attended Hofstra College until her marriage in 1948.

Evelyn is survived by her husband of 68 years, Donald Wylie; her children Lynne Griffin of Fearrington, N.C., Eileen (Michael) Rendina of Moriches and Douglas (Sonia) Wylie of Salem, N.H.; and her son-in-law Nestor Lanfray of Greenport. Her daughter Susan Lanfray predeceased her in 2011. Evelyn also leaves behind five grandchildren, Bill Lundrigan, Michael Wylie, Sean Griffin, Cheryl Natusch and Lloyd Sosa; and seven great-grandchildren, Emma, Brooke, Mackenzie, Elizabeth, Nicholas, Aidan and Luke.

Her chosen career was that of homemaker. Evelyn created a warm and nurturing home in which she and Donald raised their four children, while he pursued a career in education. When the empty-nest days arrived, she developed a passion for dollhouses — making them, building miniature pieces of furniture and sharing the fun of collecting with her daughters Susan and Eileen. She helped found and then directed the Learning Circle Preschool at the Sayville United Methodist Church.

After Donald’s retirement in 1985, the couple traveled extensively around the country and the world. They bought their home in Saddle Lakes, Riverhead in 2001 and became active members of that community, joining the First Congregational Church in Riverhead and volunteering for service of all sorts. Evelyn formed many new friendships within these two groups.

A funeral service was held Sept. 15 at the First Congregational Church, followed by a luncheon.

Emily M. Ambrose of Riverhead died Sept. 21 at Southside Hospital. She was 96.

The daughter of Felix and Viola (Jablonski) Bilski, she was born May 19, 1920.

Ms. Ambrose was a homemaker, an office manager at Sears and an office manager of the Rationing Board from 1942 to 1945.

Family members said she enjoyed cooking and sports.

Predeceased by her husband, Joseph, in 1985, Ms. Ambrose is survived by her daughters, Mary Lou Ambrose and Terry Baker and son, Joe Ambrose, all of Riverhead; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Sept. 23, from 2 to 4 at 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Frank H. Slavonik

Longtime Aquebogue resident Frank H. Slavonik died Sept. 21, 2016. He was 88.

He was born June 11, 1928, in Orient, to Stanlislaw and Laura (Janeczko) Slavonik. Educated in Mattituck Schools, he married the former Edna Breitenbach in 1950 and together they made their home in south Aquebogue. They eventually built a home on Church Lane in Aquebogue and Frank farmed the land on West Lane. In later years, he was a landscaper.

He enjoyed tending to his yard and gardens, riding his tractor and growing vegetables.

Predeceased by his wife Edna on April 30, 2012, he is survived by children, Cheryl Rosset of North Carolina, Nancy Keller of Riverhead and Terri Slavonik of Calverton and four grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Monday, Sept. 26 from 10 to 11 a.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. with Father Robert Kuznik of St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead officiating. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Eileen C. Donohue-Sullivan

Eileen C. Donohue-Sullivan of Calverton died Sept. 22 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She was 85. 

The daughter of John and Catherine Donohue, she was born June 12, 1931 in Queens.  She married William Sullivan in 1996.

Ms. Donohue-Sullivan attended St. Johns University and earned a masters degree from Catholic University. She was a teacher for the Middle Country School District.

Family members said she enjoyed fly fishing and the beach.

Ms. Donohue Sullivan is survived by her husband, William and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors Monday, Sept. 26, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral Mass will take place at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Cremation will be private.

Frank James Mazzaferro

Frank James Mazzaferro of Southold died at his home Sept. 22, 2016.

He was born March 10, 1928, in Greenport to Anna Marie (Corrozzo) and Donato Mazzaferro. After graduation from Greenport High School, he served in the U.S. Air Force and Merchant Marines for four years until his honorable discharge as a staff sergeant.

On June 19, 1955, he married the former Dorothy Young and for 28 years worked as oil burner mechanic with Falkowski-Smith Fuel Oil Co. in Southold.

Frank was a communicant and usher and a member of the Holy Name Society at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold and a member of the Merchant Marines-Peconic Bay Division and Griswold Terry Glover Post 803 of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy; three children, John Mazzaferro of Indian Trail, N.C., Robert Mazzaferro of Shelter Island and Thomas Mazzaferro of Lindenhurst; three siblings, James Mazzaferro of Mattituck, George Mazzaferro of Wallingford, Conn. and Josephine Conklin of Riverhead and three grandchildren Kaitie Mazzaferro, Michael Mazzaferro and Rachel Mazzaferro. He was predeceased by siblings Gabriel Mazzaferro Frederick Mazzaferro and Agnes Ingino.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Oct. 7, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold.

Memorial donations to St. Patrick R.C. Church, East End Hospice or St. Labre Indian School would be appreciated.
