Raleigh E. Trent

Lifelong Riverhead resident Raleigh E. Trent died March 13. He was 63.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, March 21, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Galilee Church of God in Christ in Riverhead, where a funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Riverhead Cemetery.

Arrangements were in the care of McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Deborah Chase

Deborah “Debbie” (Corwin) Chase, 57, of Vernon, Conn., beloved wife of 27 years of Arnold Chase, passed away peacefully March 5, 2017, surrounded by her family at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Conn.

Debbie was born May 29, 1959, in Cortland, N.Y. and was the loving daughter of Mike and Eleanor Corwin of Annapolis, Md. She was raised in Mattituck, attended local schools and resided there until moving to Vernon in 1985.

Pursuing her love of education, Debbie earned her bachelor’s degree from Cornell University, her teaching degree from Cortland State Teachers College, and her master’s degree from the University of Connecticut. She began her career as a science teacher at Clyde Elementary School in Clyde, N.Y. before moving to Vernon where she became a first grade teacher at Skinner Road Elementary School. Debbie continued her career at Center Road Elementary School, where she was a well-loved second grade teacher until leaving in 2013 due to her health. She was also a long-time member of the First Congregational Church of Vernon.

Debbie was a kind, giving and caring person. She loved teaching and watching her students’ progress through the school year. She loved the beach and the water, taking long walks and collecting sea shells for “beach day” at school.

Growing up a 13th generation Corwin in Mattituck, she was an avid sailor and was a captain of the Cornell sailing team. Debbie loved Cape Cod and enjoyed many summer vacations there, spreading her love of the beach and water to her children. Her family meant the world to her and she would never miss an opportunity to update friends and family of their accomplishments. She will be greatly missed by her family and all of those who knew her.

In addition to her husband and parents, Debbie is survived by her two children, Eric Chase of Shrewsbury, Mass. and Emily Chase of Vernon; her two sisters, Pamela Corwin, of Crownsville, Md. and her daughter, Jessica Maynor, of New York City, and Wendy Kain and her husband, David, of Seneca Falls, N.Y. She also leaves her mother-in-law, Phyllis Chase of Vernon; two sisters-in-law, Amy Chase of Manchester and Heather Chase and her daughter, Kinsey Loupe of Somers, Conn. and several aunts, uncles, cousins, and many wonderful friends. Debbie was predeceased by her father-in-law, Donald Chase.

Debbie also lives on through the many inspired students, young and old, whose lives she impacted in her time as an educator.

Calling hours will be held Friday, March 17, from 2 to 5 and 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Holmes Funeral Home in Manchester, Conn. A funeral service will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 18, at First Congregational Church of Vernon, Conn. Inurnment will follow in the church memorial garden.

Phil Lokkeberg

Phil Lokkeberg of Manorville died as his home March 15. He was 57. 

The son of Elizabeth (Murray) and Kenneth Lokkeberg, he was born June 17, 1959, in East Hampton.

Mr. Lokkeberg worked as a plumber for Okey Plumbing & Heating in Southampton.

Predeceased by his wife, Silvana; sister Stella Petty; mother, Elizabeth and brother Chris Anderson he is survived by his father, Kenny; sisters Mary Meagher and Judy Schoemmell; brothers Andy and his wife, Jo, Arne and Michael Lokkeberg.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, March 19, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a funeral service will take place at 8 p.m.

Stanley Joseph Dziadowicz

Stanley Joseph Dziadowicz of Cutchogue died March 17, 2017 at Kanas Center for Hospice Care in Quiogue. He was 89.

He was born in Brooklyn March 10, 1928, to Vincent and Josephine (Pilchuk) Dziadowicz and later served in the U.S. Navy.

From 1946 to 1952, he served in the U.S. Navy and Reserves. He was placed for a time on the USS Wilkes-Barre and he was awarded the American Area Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. After his honorable discharge, he enjoyed attending naval reunions.

Stanley went on to a career in telecommunications working as a journeyman with “Ma Bell” for 14 years and retiring from Local 3 after more than 20 years.

Formerly of Williston Park, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and boating with grandchildren.

Surviving are a son, William Vincent and his wife, Kathryn Margaret Dziadowicz of West Babylon; brother Vincent Dziadowicz of Florida; six grandchildren, Tara Marie (Kirk) Ostermann, William John (Laurie) Dziadowicz, Melissa Ann (Gerard) vanRingelesteijn, Adam Robert Dziadowicz, Rebecca Lynn (Eric) Hoover and Kathryn Victoria Dziadowicz and great-grandchildren Emma, Aidan and Liam Ostermann, Isabella and Jake Dziadowicz and Lucca, Quinn and Hudson vanRingelesteijn.

The family will receive visitors Monday, March 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 21, at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church, officiated by Father Mariusz Gorazd. Interment, with U.S. Navy honors, will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Joseph J. Sullivan

Former Wading River resident Joseph J. Sullivan, 72, of Dunedin, Fla., died March 17 after a brief illness.

The son of Margaret (Kyle) and Eugene Sullivan, he was born April 11, 1944, in Bayside.

Mr. Sullivan is remembered in Wading River as a businessman, having owned River Road Service Station and later, Judges Hotel. He was a licensed captain and worked making yacht deliveries along the East Coast.

Mr. Sullivan captained his own yacht, the “Barefoot Peddler,” eventually making his way to his home in Dunedin. Once in Dunedin, he worked as a car salesman at Fitzgerald Auto Mall.

He is survived by his son, James, of Montauk; his companion, Beverly Otto; two brothers, Timothy, of Pickens, S.C. and Eugene of Montana City, Mont., along with two nephews, two nieces and one cousin.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Helen A. Krupski

Helen A. Krupski of Peconic died March 20 at San Simeon by the Sound in Greenport. She was 84.

Born in Mattituck March 17, 1933, to Helen (Bialeski) and John Sidor Sr., she attended Mattituck schools and was salutatorian of her graduating class.

Two months later on Aug. 6, 1950, she married Albert J. Krupski Sr. and together they made their home in Peconic, where they farmed the land known as Krupski Farms.

Helen also worked as a medical secretary for Drs. Jay Slotkin and Lloyd Simon.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church, a member of the Sacred Heart Rosary Society and worked with the altar servers.

Surviving are her husband, Albert J. Krupski Sr.; children, Susan Krupski Fisher (Don) of Southold, Albert J. Krupski Jr. (Mary) of Peconic and James Krupski of Maryland; brothers, John Sidor Jr. (Kathi) and Edward Sidor (Althea), both of Mattituck; and grandchildren, Benjamin Krupski Fisher, Evelyn Krupski Fisher, A. Nicholas Krupski, Colleen Marie Krupski and Kimberly Susan Krupski.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, March 21, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where wake prayers will take place at 3 p.m. followed by Sacred Heart Rosary Society services. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue, officiated by Father Mariusz Gorazd. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

DeNicolo memorial set

Peter M. Coleman

Peter M. Coleman, retired local banker, passionate collector of antique custom cars and lifelong resident of Mattituck, passed away March 22, 2017. He was 75.

Mr. Coleman was born in Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport in 1941. He graduated from Mattituck High School in 1959 and from SUNY Delhi in 1961. He then served in the U.S. Army for two years. While stationed in Fort Gordon, GA, he met his future wife, Sandra Barthlow. They married in 1963.

Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Pete moved back to Mattituck where he joined North Fork Bank & Trust Co as a commercial lender. He graduated from the Stonier School of Banking at Rutgers University in 1973.

After 25 years with North Fork Bank, he joined Riverhead Savings Bank for 5 years. He then retired after 18 years with Bridgehampton National Bank.

Pete was a member of the Mattituck Fire Department where he served as fire chief and then fire commissioner. For 50 years, he was also an active member of the Mattituck Lions Club, who awarded him the Melvin Jones Award.

Pete was known around the country for his custom antique cars. Over the years, his cars were often awarded best in show at car shows across the country, and featured in national magazines.

He was also an avid boater. For many years, Pete and his wife Sandy were summer evening fixtures in Robins Island cove aboard their boat, the “Sandy Sea.”

His family and friends considered him their very own “George Bailey” from the Christmas movie classic “It’s a Wonderful Life.” He did right by everyone he met in the hometown he cherished, for a community he loved and respected. He was proud to say he had no regrets.

He was a member of the Mattituck Inlet Advisory Committee, the Hamlet Advisory Committee, the North Fork Housing Alliance, and a past elder of the Mattituck Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Coleman was predeceased by his parents, Cyril and Elizabeth (Duryee) Coleman, and his brother, Philip. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; his children, Pamela, Paul, and Janet (Sides), grandson, Seth (Zahra), sister, Virginia (Hoag), two nieces and a nephew.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. A Mattituck Fire Department service will be held at 7:30 p.m., immediately followed by a Mattituck Lions Club Service.

Mr. Coleman will be interred in the Coleman Family Cemetery inBuckingham, Va. during a service held by his surviving sister, Virginia Coleman Hoag, and his entire Virginia-based family.

The Coleman family requests that donations be made to either the Kanas Center for Hospice Care in Quiogue or to the charity of choice.

Dominick J. Gebbia

Dominick J. Gebbia of Riverhead died March 21 home on March 21. He was 80.Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 25, at Saint Isidore R.C. Cemetery in Riverhead.

Thomas Hale Harris

Thomas Hale Harris of Southold died March 20, 2017, in his home at the age of 65.

He was born in Nampa, Idaho, Feb. 12, 1952, to Bud and Barbara Harris and later married JJ Harris April 28, 1979, in Elko, Nev.

Mr. Harris was a banker with the former North Fork Bank since 1990. In 2009, he joined Bank United.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Heather (Jeff) Ellis and Hailey (Kyle) Schadt; his siblings, Tim Harris of Burley, Idaho and Geri Betts of Pocatello, Idaho; and four beautiful grandchildren, Jordan and Tyler Ellis and Peyton and Harper Schadt.

Services were held at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.

Memorial donations to East End Hospice or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center would be appreciated.

Anne Phyllis Klipp

Anne Phyllis Klipp of Southold died in her home on the morning of March 23, 2017. She was 95.

Born in Greenport on Jan. 28, 1922, to Anna and Luther Hardy, she was a graduate of Greenport High School Class of 1939.

In September 1941, she married Lawrence Klipp and together they lived on Shelter Island from 1980 to 1985. For the past 30 years, she lived in Southold.

Phyllis had been the admin office director of the library in Prince Georges County, Md. for 10 years.

In the North Fork community, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Southold, American Legion Auxiliary and had been the travel director for the Southold Senior Citizens from 1984 to 1989. She was also a 40-year member of Sweet Adelines.

She is survived by her children, Larry of South Dakota, Marilyn of San Diego, Calif., Jean of South Carolina and Joel of Bakersfield, Calif. and eight grandchildren, Christopher and Leslie, Brent, Adam and Melissa and Justine, Krystalyn and Gabriella. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence B. Klipp and her sister, Helen Frederick (née Hardy). Also surviving are family members Steve and Heather Geehreng, Edith Kudlinski, Joan Olszewski, Jean Dunkirk, Louis Green, Mary Part Tuthill, Scott Klipp and Peter Klipp.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, at First Presbyterian Church in Southold officiated by the Rev. Dr. Peter J. Kelley. Interment will follow at St. Agnes R.C. Cemetery in the Greenport.

DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home assisted the family.

Elizabeth J. Drumm

Elizabeth J. “Betty” Drumm of Mattituck passed away peacefully March 17, 2017, at San Simeon by the Sound in Greenport. She was 79. 

Elizabeth was born Dec. 28, 1937, to Mary (Bradley) and Elliott Hooghkirk in Copiague. She attended Saint Mary’s High School in Manhassett and graduated in 1955. The family moved to Mattituck, where she met and married Walter G. Drumm April 4, 1959. Together they built a home on Deephole Drive and raised a family.

Elizabeth worked as a telephone operator for New York Telephone, retiring in 1990. She was also a Mattituck school bus driver employed by Sunrise Bus Company.

Predeceased by her husband in 1989, Elizabeth is survived by her children, Michael Drumm and his wife, Jo-Ann, of Southold, Susan Mickaliger and her husband, Kenneth, of Southold and Debra Doubrava and her husband, Derrick, of Clintondale, N.Y. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Gabriella and Elizabeth Drumm, Kevin, Kaitlyn and Allison Mickaliger, Erin and Matthew Doubrava, as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 24, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 25, at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck.

Interment will follow at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Viola Rose Newton

Viola Rose Newton of Riverhead died March 22 at Acadia Center in Riverhead. She was 86. 

She was born Jan. 31, 1931, in Huntington.

Ms. Newton worked as a receptionist for Acadia Center. She was a member of the Twin Forks Red Hat Society.

Family members said she loved to go to Friendly’s, enjoyed plays and cabaret shows and loved to dress up for the holidays.

Predeceased by her husband, Thomas, in 1997 and her daughter, Beverly Moore, Ms. Newton is survived by her son-in-law, David Moore of Central Islip; her special friend, Juanita Henderson; and one grandchild.

The family received visitors March 26 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service took place March 27 at Calverton National Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Josephine Brill

Josephine Brill of Riverhead died March 26 at Acadia Center in Riverhead. She was 95. 

The daughter of Michael and Josephine Stankowits, she born Jan. 15, 1922, in New York City.

Family member said Ms. Brill was a homemaker who enjoyed painting.

Predeceased by her husband, Frank, in 2009 and her son, Robert, in 2007, she is survived by her daughter, Janice Kozlovsky; her sister, Vilma Herzog of Riverhead and two grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, March 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Cremation will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation.

Lynne Meyers Gordon

Lynne Meyers Gordon, a retired attorney who practiced often in Riverhead, passed away March 14, 2017, at the Kanas Center for Hospice Care in Quiogue.

She was born May 4, 1944, in Sioux Falls, S.D., during World War II while her father was in the Army Air Corps and so the family moved around quite a bit. When she was 2, the family moved to Pennsylvania and when she was 15 they moved to Rockford, Ill.

She attended the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she met her future husband, Howard Gordon, and earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Juris Doctor degree in 1970. Lynne and Howard married in August 1968, which would have been 49 years this summer.

They moved to Long Island in 1970 and Lynne initially worked at a title company in Riverhead in 1971. She was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1972. Her first job as a lawyer was with a firm in Smithtown, but in 1985 she became a partner in a small firm in Riverhead. Soon she joined Scheinberg, Schnepps, De Petris and De Petris in Aquebogue. Later she joined Wickham, Wickham, Bressler, Gordon and Geasa in Mattituck. Finally she had a solo practice in Riverhead.

Lynne enjoyed traveling, classical music, playing the piano, photography, reading, crossword puzzles, movies and “Law and Order.” She was a director of the Suffolk County Bar Association, as well as a member of the boards of directors of Riverhead Free Library and Temple Israel of Riverhead.

She is survived by her husband, Howard; her son, Michael, of Sarasota, Fla.; her daughter, Bethe, of Los Angeles, Calif.; her brother, David Myers of Bettendorf, Iowa; her sisters, Lisa Rogers and Lori Myers of Eden Prairie, Minn.; and her two granddaughters, Maya and Kira of Sarasota.

A funeral was held at Temple Israel of Riverhead March 17.

Kenneth F. Nolan

Kenneth F. Nolan died March 22, 2017, at the age of 87, while being comforted by loving family and dear friends.

Kenneth was raised in New York and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950. As a sergeant first class in the 23rd Regiment Company 2d, Company L, he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his heroic and inspiring leadership on Sept. 16, 1950, in Korea.

After the war Kenneth met the love of his life, Ardith Klein, got married in May of 1958 and started a family. They lived most of their lives in Cutchogue. His five proud children, Karen, Kevin, Kenneth J., Kris and Gary and their families, survive him.

For over 35 years he had a distinguished career at United Airlines in the New York area and retired in 1984. He loved life, family and friends and was often the hit of the party.

For many years he was a Riverhead chapter member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, and the Loyal Order of Moose where he served on the ritual team and as governor.

He made friends wherever he went and was a tremendous husband and father; an honest, kind and sweet man who went out of his way to help others.

Nancy E. Punda

Nancy E. Punda of Wading River died March 27, 2017, in her 86th year.

She was the beloved wife of Michael; loving mother of James, Greg and Michael; mother-in-law of Claudette; dear sister of Pete, Nick and Leo; and the treasured grandmother and great-grandmother of many.

The family received visitors March 29 at Alexander-Tuthill Funeral Home in Wading River. A funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 30, at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church in Wading River. Burial will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Sherry Ann Shinn

Sherry Ann Shinn of Riverhead died March 27 at the Kanas Center for Hospice in Quiogue. She was 62.

The daughter of George and Lois Mandella, she was born March 4, 1955, in Worcester, Mass.

Family members said she enjoyed bowling, crochet and NASCAR and loved her friends.

Ms. Shinn is survived by her partner, George.

The family will receive visitors Saturday, April 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Interment will take place Monday, April 3, in Paxton, Mass.

Anita McKine

Former Riverhead Anita McKine of Bellport died March 27 at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. She was 50. 

The daughter of James and Addie (Blackman) McKine, she was born Oct. 16, 1966, at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. She graduated from Riverhead High School in 1985.

Ms. McKine worked as a secretary for Jennings Asphalt.

Family members said she enjoyed cooking and baking.

Predeceased by her parents, Ms. McKine is survived by her children, Dennis Carer Jr. of Riverhead, Latrice Carter of Riverhead and Taiheem McKay of Riverhead; sisters, Sarah McKine, Sirena Childress and Lena Washington and brother James and Curtis McKine and Preston Washington and one grandchild.

Cremation was private. A memorial will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are in the care of Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.

Genevieve M. Thomas

Genevieve M. Thomas of Jamesport died March 30 at her home. She was 90.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, April 7, at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, officiated by Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery. There will be no public calling hours.
