Tessie Doroski Karpinski of Rivehread died June 12 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She was 95. 

The family will receive visitors Friday, June 16, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Walter E. Haberman of Riverhead died June 13 at the Acadia Center in Riverhead. He was 97.

Maryann T. Larsen of Wading River, passed away June 12, 2017, in her 81st year.

She was the beloved mother of, Colleen (Greg), Eric, Claudia (Ronald) and Rachel (Robert); treasured grandmother of Brendan, Logan, Shane, Jeb, Wyatt, Chloe, Zachary, Jacob, and Austin; the loving sister of Tom (Elsie) and former spouse of Richard.

A Mass of Christian burial was held at St. John the Baptist in Wading River and a burial followed at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Center Moriches.

Funeral services were entrusted to Alexander-Rothwell Funeral Home, Wading River.

George J. Goettelmann

George J. Goettelmann of Riverhead died June 15 at his home. He was 97. 

The son of George and Julia Goettelmann, he was born Dec. 22, 1919, in New York City. He attended Jamaica High School and Pratt Institute.

Mr. Goettelmann served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. He received a Distinguished Flying Cross award in 1945.

He worked as an insurance broker for AE Goettelmann & Company and served on the board of directors for State Bank N.Y.

He was a past member of of the Knights of Columbus, past member and president of the Strathmore Country Club and a member of New York State Movers and Warehouseman’s Association.

Family members said he enjoyed golf, gardening and home renovations.

Predeceased by his wife, Harriet, in 1984 and his sister, Julia, Mr. Goettelmann is survived by his wife, Anna Marie of Riverhead; children Georgette Hespos of Wading River, Laurence, of Glen Cove, George, of Palm Gardens, Fla., Ellen Palmedo of Remsenburg and Robert, of Sea Cliff; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Monday, June 19, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at McLaughin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a funeral service will take place at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Memorial donations may me made to Northport VA Hospital.

Dennis Joseph Gleeson of Kings Park, passed away suddenly June 14 at his home. He was 51.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was raised and lived in Ridgewood, N.J. and later moved to Kings Park.

Dennis graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Montvale, N.J. where he was a member of the wrestling team, earning the Most Improved Player for the 1983-84 varsity campaign. He attended Bergen Community College where he received an associate degree in hotel and restaurant management.

Dennis possessed strength, perseverance and an ability to overcome incredible odds and physical challenges. With his courage, he led us to believe that each day is a blessing and an opportunity to create lasting memories.

Dennis was a devoted and lifelong Yankees fan and an avid reader who was never without a book, magazine or a newspaper. He would enter many online contests and sweepstakes, often winning many unique prizes that he would always share with his nieces and nephews.

Dennis was predeceased by his father, Joseph Gleeson and his mother, Margaret Gleeson. He is survived by his brother, Kevin (Kathy) Gleeson of Marietta, Ga. and sister, Tara (Craig) Mulvaney of Manasquan, N.J. He is also survived by his loving nephews and nieces, Jake and Kayleigh Gleeson and Natalie and Ryan Mulvaney.

Dennis will always be remembered for his big heart, sparkling smile, infectious laugh and his loving and kind soul.

A celebration of his life and funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday June 22, at at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold.

Albert Robert Summerville

Albert Robert Summerville, a longtime resident of Riverhead, passed away peacefully June 16, 2017, while in hospice care. He was 88.

Albert is survived by his wife of 45 years, Alice Summerville; his son Albert Robert Summerville Jr. and daughter-in-law, Debbie; his daughter, Barbara Jean Summerville and her husband, James Leahy and his stepdaughter, Susan Bruchhagen. His grandchildren, Ross, Jessica and Kyle Milligan and Noah Summerville also survive him as does his sister-in-law, Ruth Nelson. He is predeceased by his siblings, Shirley West and Christopher Summerville. Albert was greatly loved and will be deeply missed.

Albie was born in Riverdale on April 4, 1929. His parents were Christopher and Mary (Watrous) Summerville. He served on the Riverhead police force for 35 years and retired as a detective. He also served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 21, at the First Congregational Church of Riverhead. Interment with military honors will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Funeral Arrangements are entrusted to Tuthill Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Former Riverhead resident Catherine Elliott Jones, 95, of Port Washington died June 18.

She was the beloved wife of Robert; cherished mother of RonnyLynn, Carol (Terry), Scott (Terri), Vanessa, and Towney (Diane); adored grandmother of Enza, Bobby, Kelly, Keith, Kira, Lisa, Lisha, Lindsey, Jessica, Jeffrey and Teagan; great-grandmother of Cailin, Ezra, Luke, Kyle, Leighanna, Michael, Jacob, Nicholas, Sara, Holly, MaciRae, Elijah, Branden, Sara, Luca, Reed, Race, Carmine, Camille, Alexis and Justin; and sister of Jimmy, George, Loretta, Mary, Betty, Louise, Ray, and Eugene.

Catherine was an amazing and nurturing woman to all her family members and friends.

She enjoyed an active lifestyle and participated in tennis and skiing. She was an award winning Senior Olympics enthusiast, taking her love of skiing to a level that made her family proud. Catherine loved to travel around the world alongside her husband, Bob, creating many happy memories. Catherine also took pleasure in crossword puzzles and water aerobics.

She worked at Macy’s in the order clerking department on the 13th floor. During World War II, she worked as a rivoter at Grumman Aircraft Company in Port Washington. Later she worked at Quaker Oats Company helping manufacture bombs for the war effort in Nebraska, where her husband Bob was stationed in the Army Air Corps. In later years, Catherine was a secretary for her husband’s building business.

Albert A. Brisotti III

Albert A. Brisotti III of Ridge died June 18, 2017. Diane, his wife of almost 50 years, predeceased him in 2014.

Albert was an extraordinary father and grandfather to his sons and grandchildren as well as a wonderful big brother and mentor to his four brothers. He was a fine athlete, a championship lacrosse player at C. W. Post, a CPA, and a 49-year singing member of the Huntington Men’s Chorus. In addition he was a former member of the choir at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, and a current member of the choir at St John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. He volunteered his services in many ways, such as secretary to the board of Eastern Long Island Hospital.

Albert is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Patty of Wildwood, Mo. and Glenn and Angela of Mattituck and his grandchildren, Emily, Kaitlyn and Christian.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, June 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 22, at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead, Father William Brisotti officiating. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Memorial donations to Peconic Bay Medical Center Foundation – Palliative Care or Autism Speaks would be appreciated.

He was born in Lesbos, Greece Dec. 6, 1923, to Anthony and Theodora Kanaris and had been a merchant marine officer for Stratos Shipping Company.

He built a home in Captain Kidd Estates 34 years ago and moved here permanently from Flushing, Queens 20 years ago.

Byron enjoyed gardening, fishing and playing cards.

Surviving are his wife Mary Canaris; daughter Elisabeth Archer of Norwich, N.Y.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The Divine Liturgy was celebrated June 20 at Transfiguration of Christ Greek Orthodox Church in Mattituck, officiated by Father Constantine Makrinos officiated. Interment took place at New Bethany Cemetery in Mattituck.

Evelyn W. Raynor of Mattituck died suddenly June 21, 2017, at the age of 76.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, William F. Raynor; two daughters, Deborah Urianek of East Islip and Karen Bartosik of Blanchburg, N.J.; a twin brother, Frank Wruck of Southold; grandchildren, Peter and Martin Bartosik and a great-grandchild, Nina Bartosik. She was predeceased by her son, Gregory W. Raynor on Sept. 17, 1997.

The family received visitors June 23 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Religious services were held June 24 at the funeral home, officiated by the Rev. Ronald Wickey. Interment took place at New Bethany Cemetery in Mattituck.

Marion R. King of Southold died at her home June 19, 2017. She was 93.
She was born on Oct. 5, 1923, in Southold to George and Rose Smith and was a graduate of Southold High School.

Marion lived her entire life in Southold at the family residence on Main Road.

For many years, she operated Marion R. King Realty in Cutchogue.

Predeceased by her husband, John M. King Jr. on June 2, 2003, she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Meryle King of Remsenburg; two grandchildren Ryan King and Sonya Brigham and four great-grandchildren Hayley, Cole, Quincy and Grady Brigham. She was predeceased by siblings Daniel Smith, G. Herbert Smith and William Smith all of Southold.

The family received friends on June 20 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold Religious services were held on June 21, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Peter J. Kelley. Interment took place at Cutchogue Cemetery.

Edward J. “Buzzy” Truskolaski

Edward J. “Buzzy” Truskolaski of Westhampton died June 22, 2017. He was 59.He was born Jan. 21, 1958, in Riverhead to Edward and Nellie Truskolaski and attended Riverhead Schools and Southampton College.

For past 34 years, Buzzy worked at the Suffolk County Water Authority in Hauppauge, most recently as a project manager.

Buzzy enjoyed the beach, gardening and photography.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Irene (née Bobryk); an aunt, Anna Horvitz and cousins, Dave and Heidi Horvitz of California.

Calling hours took place on June 26 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated June 27 at at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead, officiated by Father Piotr Narkiewicz. Interment followed at St. Isidore R.C. Cemetery in Riverhead.

Former Riverhead resident Fletcher E. Johnson, of Copiague, passed away on June 21, 2017. He was 63 years old.

He was born in Riverhead Jan. 12, 1954, to Charles N. Johnson and Harriet Booker. He worked as a security guard at Costco in Melville, NY.

Mr. Johnson was the dear brother of Theodore R. Johnson, Annie J. Graves, William H. Johnson, the late Albert V. Parker, the late Thomas E. Johnson, the late Charles M. Johnson, the late Lawrence A. Johnson and the late Sherwood L. Johnson; beloved nephew of Carol Joynes and Raymond Booker; adored uncle of Tanya Harris and a host of nieces and nephews; loving brother-in-law to Jennifer Johnson, Dorys Johnson and Leona Elder and cherished companion of Beverly Flowers.

The family will receive visitors Saturday, July 1, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a service will take place at 2 p.m. Cremation will be private.

Joseph N. Vail

Joseph N. Vail of Riverhead passed away Friday, June 23. He was 69.Born in Greenport on Nov. 8, 1947, he spent his childhood in Mattituck and later Red Cedar Point in Hampton Bays.

Joe spent much of his life hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors with his family and friends. He graduated from Mercy High School and served in the U.S. Army for two years.

On May 4, 1968, he married Barbara, who was his loving wife of 49 years.
Joe spent his entire career in the family business of car sales. He started off at Vail Motors in Riverhead and worked alongside his grandfather, father and brothers.

Joe was known for his honesty, integrity and sense of humor; he loved a corny joke. He was a longtime and active member of the Lions Club, including a term as president.

Joe was an amazing brother, husband, father and Poppy.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara; children, Joseph and his wife, Allyson, and Rachel; grandchildren Aidan, Nate and Maggie; siblings Carl, Donna, Walter and Diana and beloved nieces and nephews.

Joe will be remembered for his loving heart, thoughtfulness and devotion to his family.

The family received visitors June 25 at McLaughlin-Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a funeral service took place June 26. Burial followed at Calverton National Cemetery.

Nelson E. Dussault

Nelson E. Dussault of Calverton died June 26 2017. He was 92. 

He was born Dec. 9, 1924, in Fall River, Mass.

After graduating from high school, Nelson joined the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served on the USS Shangri-La aircraft carrier in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was called back to service during the Korean War, where he served on the USS Boxer aircraft carrier.

Nelson met Jean A. Johnson in 1948 when both were members of a ski club. They married in December 1950.

After completing his Navy service, Nelson worked at a milk distribution company as a milk man. In 1954, he accepted a job as the general manager at a small milk processing and distribution company, Gilmartin Dairy in Southampton. Nelson and Jean relocated to Bridgehampton where they raised their family of four daughters.

Nelson’s entire career was in the dairy business. He retired from Elmhurst Dairy in 1987 as sales-account manager for the more than 60 A&P Supermarkets on Long Island and New York City.

Nelson was president of the Bridgehampton Lions Club in the late 1950s and he taught a public speaking class for Dale Carnegie at the Riverhead High School adult eduction program.

Nelson was an avid skier; his last ski trip was to Sun Valley, Idaho, at the age of 86. He enjoyed playing poker with his friends at Foxwood Village and the Loyal Order of Moose, as well as dancing at the many Foxwood and Moose dances. Among his other interests were woodworking and reading. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Nelson was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jean, in January 2017 and daughter Susan in August 1979. He is survived by his three daughters Lynn C. McCarthy of Scarsdale, N.Y., Karen Dussault of Hampton Bays and Nancy Giordano of New City, N.Y.; son-in-law, Philip Giordano and three grandchildren, Dana, Jamie and Lisa Giordano.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, June 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donors choosing.

Daniel D. Romero of Riverhead died June 20 at his home. He was 43. 

The son of Daniel Romero and Mary Hubbard, he was born May 4, 1974, in Riverhead.

Mr. Romero worked as a server for Odyssey Catering.

Mr. Romero is survived by his mother, Mary Hubbard of Riverhead; sisters, Marian Romero of Mastic and Debbie Hubbard of Riverhead; brother, John Hubbard of East Islip; children, Aaron Codding, Christian Romero, Adrian Romero, Ayden Romero and Dynasty Romero.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, June 28, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Galilee Church of God in Christ in Riverhead, where a service will follow at 11 a.m.

Former Riverhead resident Thirza N. Grodski of Florida died Dec. 14, 2016, in Florida. She was 67.

The daughter of Henry and Thirza (Hinkley) Okula, she was born March 23, 1949, in Port Jefferson. She graduated from Riverhead High School in 1967.

Ms. Grodski worked as a telephone operator for New York Telephone and Bell South and also at Home Depot.

She was a member of the Riverhead Polish Independent Club Ladies Auxiliary.

Family members said she enjoyed baking and cake decorating.

Ms. Grodski is survived by her husband, Edward, of Florida; children, Brandon, of Florida, Arlene Curcio of Commack and Jennifer Stone of Florida; siblings, Albin Okula of Riverhead and Philip of Okula of Patchogue; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, June 28, from 6 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Interment will take place at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 29, at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church Cemetery in Riverhead.

Sophie A. Schmidt of Riverhead died June 27 at the Peconic Bay Medical Center Skilled Nursing Facility. She was 67. 

The daughter of Louis and Doris (Sneed) Gatz, she was born Aug. 24, 1949, in Riverhead. She graduated from Riverhead High School in 1967.

Ms. Schmidt served in the U.S. Air Force from 1967 to 1969.

She worked as the manager of the health and beauty department at Waldbaum’s in Westhampton Beach.

Family members said she enjoyed playing bingo, spending time with her grandchildren and was a Mets fan.

Predeceased by her daughter, Libby Brady in 2002, Ms. Schmidt is survived by her son, George, of Calverton; her sister, Mary Gatz of Riverhead; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, June 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, June 30, at Wading River Congregational Church. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Lawyer C. Jackson of Riverhead died June 27 at his home. He was 86. 

The son of Cornelius and Minnie (Miles) Jackson, he was born Feb. 19, 1931, in Riverhead.

Mr. Jackson was a retired buildings and grounds supervisor with Riverhead Town.

He served as a deacon at Friendship Baptist Church in Riverhead.

Family members said he enjoyed fishing, baseball, singing and working in the yard.

He is survived by his wife, Othelia (née Milkan); children, Lawyer Jackson Jr. of Riverhead and Sandra Harris of Moriches; siblings, Charlotte Nelson of Riverhead, Joan James of Delaware, Lillian Burris of Riverhead and Charles Jackson of North Carolina; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Monday, July 3, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, where a service will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at Riverhead Cemetery.
