James R. Wells

James R. Wells of Mattituck died at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead on Sept. 5, 2017. He was 72.

He was born July 7, 1945, in Greenport to Clara (Diaz) and Theodore Wells and raised in Mattituck where he attended school. On May 2, 1967, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam until his honorable discharge on May 1, 1969, as a sergeant.

Six weeks later, on June 14, 1969, Jim married the former Nancy Bird at the Mattituck Presbyterian Church. Together they made their home in Mattituck, where they still resided.

He worked as a mechanic for Sound Avenue Equipment and later for Grumman as a millwright.

Jim was a member of the Peconic Bay Car Club, Griswold Terry Glover American Legion Post 803 and a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. He enjoyed camping and traveling and was a former motorcycle rider and enjoyed his classic cars with his son, Jim.

Family members recall Jim was a happy person, full of life and always smiling, who never complained.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy; son, Jim (Cindy) Wells; siblings Theodore (Rita) Wells, Janet Howard, Maryann (Tony) Hoopingarner and Stanley Kinney; grandchildren, Howard Gayne, T.J. Wells and Tabitha Wells and great-grandchildren, Charlotte Elizabeth and Logan Everett Gayne. He was predeceased by siblings David Wells, Sheila Wilke and William Wells.

The family received visitors  Sept. 8 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck where U.S. Army honors were rendered. Religious services were conducted at the funeral home Sept. 9 officiated by Caren Heacock, Pastoral Assistant at Mattituck Presbyterian Church. Interment followed at New Bethany Cemetery in Mattituck.

Memorial donations in Jim’s name may be made to Mattituck Presbyterian Church Loaves & Fishes Program or Mattituck Fire Department.

Dorothy Clark Esseks

Dorothy Clark Esseks

Dorothy Clark Esseks of Aquebogue died on Sept. 7, 2017, just a month shy of 83 years old. Dorothy was a teacher and community leader in Riverhead for 58 years.

Dorothy and her husband, William W. Esseks, moved to Riverhead in 1959 when Dorothy started teaching kindergarten in the Riverhead public schools and Bill joined the Griffing, Smith & Tasker law firm. When she had her first child, Katherine, in 1961, Dorothy retired from teaching to devote herself to her family and the community. Twin sons, David and James, arrived in 1965.

Dorothy’s community service spanned several decades. In the 1960s, she was an active member of and then president of the local chapter of the League of Women Voters. From 1970 through 1985, Dorothy was a member of the school board of the Riverhead Central School District and helped the district through some trying fiscal situations. In the late 1980s through early 1990s, Dorothy was a member of the board of the Suffolk County Historical Society. She was also a member of the Riverhead Women’s Club and served time as president of her local property owners association.

Born Dorothy Ann Clark, she grew up in Palisade, N.J., and then Lakeview in Nassau County. Her father was in charge of developing new flavors for the Borden Ice Cream Company, and Dorothy loved testing out his creations. Her mother worked as a sales clerk at a department store.

Dorothy graduated second in the Class of 1952 at Malverne High School and entered Oberlin College that fall, where she met Bill. She earned a degree in early childhood education in 1956 and then taught kindergarten in Lawrence, N.Y., while Bill attended law school at New York University.

Dorothy was always interested in the arts, especially dance and painting. In her later years, she created artwork in pastel and watercolor. She and Bill were also avid dancers, whirling each other across dance floors all around the world on their travels.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Bill; her daughter, Katherine; her son David, his wife, Katy Stokes, and their children, Will and Eloise and her son James and his husband, Rob Ornstein.

Ruth E. Baumgardt

Ruth E. (Raynor) Baumgardt passed away peacefully Sept. 9, 2017. She lived to be 54 years old.

Ruth worked for the State of New Jersey as a cottage training supervisor at the Hunterdon Developmental Center.

She volunteered for the Phillipsburg Emergency Squad, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America and the Young Men’s Italian Association.

A fierce and loyal fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees, Ruth enjoyed spending time with her friends and family.

In addition to her husband, Eric Baumgardt, Ruth is also survived by her three children, Kyle, Kelsey and Katie, as well as her mother, Sharon Raynor; her sister Barbara Good and her husband, Scott; her sister Laurie Gilroy and her husband, Joseph; and her sister Tara Raynor-Perez and her husband, Byron Perez. Her nieces and nephews include Neill, Christopher, Kiaya, Shelby, Bryan, Brionna, Anna, Tim, Alex and Jaydy.
She was predeceased by her father, George Harvey Raynor Sr. and her brother, George Harvey Raynor Jr.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Sept. 14, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at noon Friday, Sept. 15, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at the Riverhead Cemetery.

Willie Childress Sr.

Former Riverhead resident Willie Childress Sr. of Medford died Sept. 7 at Brookhaven Hospital. He was 89.

The son of William and Martha Childress, he was born Jan. 13, 1928, in Cumberland, Va.

Mr. Childress worked for Joseph Gergella Sr. as a landscaper.

Family members said he enjoyed gardening, walking and music and that he loved his church.

Predeceased by his wife, Mamie, in 2007, Mr. Childress is survived by his children, Rosa Lee Childress and Willie Jr., both of Medford and two grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Saturday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead, followed by a funeral service at 10 a.m., officiated by Pastors Anthony Trezza and Kevin McGuiness. Cremation will be private.

Alexander Wacik

Alexander “Dzi Dzi” Wacik, 92, of Riverhead died Sept. 6 at Peconic Bay Medical Center Skilled Nursing Facility in Riverhead.

The son of Mary (Schwonick) and Michael Wacik, he was born May 11, 1925, in the Bronx. He graduated high school and attended college.

Mr. Wacik served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, achieving the rank of radarman second class.

He worked for the Nassau County Police Department in Mineola, as a senior EMT.

Predeceased by his wife, Irene, in 2012 and his daughter, Susan Schuchardt in 2001, Mr. Wacik is survived by his sons, Alexander (Annmarie) and Michael (Laura); his sister, Helen Szelwach; his grandchildren, Stephanie, Michelle, Sarah, Jessica, Christen, Eric and Ravan and great-grandchildren Claire, Charlie Alana and Monroe.

The family received visitors Sept. 10 at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service took place Sept. 11 at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, officiated by Father Bohdan Hedz. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Sophie R. Brown

Sophie R. Brown of Riverhead died at her home Sept. 10. She was 82. 

The daughter of Emmitt and Elsie Love, she was born June 21, 1935, in Speonk.

Ms. Brown was a laundry worker at Crescent Duck Farm in Aquebogue. For over 30 years, she was a member of the Maranatha Choir.

Predeceased by her husband, John, Ms. Brown is survived by her children, Lane Simmons of Riverhead, Michael Simmons of Queens and Christopher Simmons of Riverhead; her sisters, Kathleen Evans of Riverhead and Elsie White of Maryland; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Monday, Sept. 18, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church in Flanders, where a funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Cremation will be private.

Arrangements were in the care of McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Virginia R. Hinsch

Virginia R. “Ginny” Hinsch, a resident of Mattituck, died suddenly Sept. 7, 2017. She was 61.

She was born April 13, 1956, in Plainview and moved to the family home in New Suffolk. She attended the New Suffolk Common School and graduated from Southold High School.

Ginny worked for many years at Cliff’s Rendezvous restaurant in Riverhead and at Braun Seafood Co. in Cutchogue. She was an avid gardener and created her own backyard paradise each and every year.

Ginny is survived by her life partner of 20 years, Tom Fabry, and his immediate family, John and Lorraine Fabry of Mattituck, Stacey Fabry of Cutchogue and John Scott Fabry of East Islip. She is also survived by her cousins, Andrea Rive of New Suffolk, Linda Corrigan of Mattituck, Nancy Syvertsen of Lakeland, Fla., and Robert Goodale of Mattituck, as well as all their children and grandchildren; and many lifelong friends. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Edna Hinsch; her sister, Carol Hinsch; her aunts and uncles; and her cousin, William Goodale.

The family will receive visitors today, Thursday, Sept. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. A memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. at the funeral home, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Peter J. Kelley. Interment will be private at Cutchogue Cemetery.

Marie Anne Colwell

North Fork native Marie Anne Colwell of Mooresville, N.C. passed away Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017, after a brief battle with cancer. 

Marie was born Aug. 5, 1965, on Long Island to Barbara and John Berdinka.

She was well known for her love of gardening, baking and family gatherings.

In addition to her parents, Marie is survived by her husband of 27 years, Robert Colwell; her three children, Chris, Danny and Laura (Nathan) Myers and her grandson, Tanner. She is also survived by by her siblings Mark, Theresa and Michael, who all reside on Long Island.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Fritzie Kulesa

Former Riverhead resident Fritzie Kulesa (Frances Rogers) died Sept. 14 in Naples, Fla.

Fritzie was born June 17, 1934, to Edward and Estelle (Czygier) Rogers. Upon graduating from Riverhead High School in 1951, Fritzie joined her parents in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, where she was employed by the Arabian American Oil Company.

In 1954, she and John Kulesa married and they spent 52 years together raising their two sons, Richard and Jack, and were devoted to their grandchildren, Danielle, Richard and Rachel.

John and Fritzie lived with their boys on the Kulesa farm in Calverton and enjoyed many years of farming. In later years they were proprietors of Regula’s Corner in Polish Town and also ran polka weekends in the Catskills, where over 600 people would gather each weekend to enjoy three days of polkas and fun.

In 1980, Fritzie was elected president of the Polish Town Civic Association, accepting the challenge of organizing and extending the annual street fair in Polish Town from a one-day event to a two-day affair, which remains in effect today.

In 1990, Fritzie and John moved to Florida, where John enjoyed golf and Fritzie loved the warm weather and the beach. In 2006 they moved from West Palm Beach, Fla., to Naples.

Fritzie is survived by her two sons, Richard, of Naples, Fla., and Jack, of Calverton, and three grandchildren, Danielle, Richard and Rachel. She was predeceased by her husband, John, and her brother, Richard.

Rev. Canon John E. Madden

The Rev. Canon John E. Madden died at his home in Laurel Sept. 9, 2017, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 80.

Born in the Bronx on April 9, 1937, to James and Lilly Madden, he later attended Queens College, Nashotah House Theological Seminary and St. Vladimir’s Yeshiva.

For 54 years, he was an Episcopal priest serving at St. John the Baptist Church in Center Moriches and St. Thomas of Canterbury in Smithtown.

He had been a resident of the North Fork for the past 22 years and a member of Church of the Redeemer in Mattituck.0

Surviving are his wife Gail (née Murphy), whom he married June 28, 1992, at Christ Church in Babylon; four children, Patrick Madden and his partner, Mark Hyman of Boston, Don Venezia and his wife, Lynda, of New Jersey, Liz and her husband, Neil Orlando of Maryland and Amanda Venezia and her fiancé, Bill Lehman of Virginia; a sister, Nora and her husband, Robert Seplavy of Bay Shore and four grandchildren, Steven, James, Alina and Julia Venezia.

Services will be held at the Cathedral of the Incarnation with The Right Rev. Lawrence C. Provenzano, officiating at a date and time to be announced. Interment will take place at Christ Episcopal Church in Babylon.

DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Susan S. Burke

Susan S. Burke of Mattituck died at the Kanas Center for Hospice Care Sept. 15, 2017. She was 67.

She was born in Flushing Sept. 11, 1950, to Eileen M. (O’Keefe) and Edward R. Burke.

Raised in Bayside, she attended Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament School and Bayside High School. She later attended Grace Institute in New York City for two years.

A resident of the North Fork for the past 50 years, she enjoyed a 45-year career in banking, retiring as assistant vice president with North Fork/Capital One Bank.

Susan was a Lioness for Lions Clubs International and a member of the chamber of commerce.

Surviving are her siblings William Burke of Miami, Fla., Deborah Stasiukiewicz Burke of South Jamesport, Thomas Burke of Laurel and Robert Burke of Riverhead; five nephews; two nieces; and three great-nieces. She was predeceased by her mother in December 2004, her father in May 2012, and her brother Edward J. Burke of Quogue in December 2016.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Sept. 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 23, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt will conduct a prayer service at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Konrad Doroski

Konrad “Skelly” Doroski, lifelong Aquebogue resident, died peacefully surrounded by his family at the age of 87.

Skelly was born Jan. 29, 1930, to Frank and Justyna (Ruskowski) Doroski. He grew up on the family farm with his 10 brothers and sisters. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Japan for 3 ½ years, attaining the rank of staff sergeant.

He returned home and married Gloria “Bunny” Breitenbach and raised three children.
Skelly worked for Rheingold Breweries for 22 years, garnering numerous sales awards and rising to the position of district manager, after which he purchased and ran Skelly’s Farmstand for many years.

He enjoyed his family, his garden and especially ballroom and polka dancing, attending many polka weekends over the years.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bunny; his son Ken (Dawn) of Wayne, Pa.; his son Dave (Nona) of Wyncote, Pa.; his daughter, Shelly (Tom Huysman) of Aquebogue and grandchildren, Derek (Laura), Danica, Nolan (Trishna), April, Michael and Claire Doroski, Alexis Ybañez (Mike), Justine and Mark Huysman and four great-grandchildren, as well as his siblings, Bertha Wilcenski, Irene Zlatniski and Beanie Sujecki.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Sept. 29, from 4 to 8 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead.

Memorial donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at Peconic Bay Medical Center.

Richard Glenn Scheschowitz of Riverhead, 55, died Sept. 17, 2017, at home surrounded by family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marianne (DeSantis) Scheschowitz; daughter, Lisa Falconetti and her husband, Paul; son, Matthew Denham; grandchildren, Logan, Payton, Justin and Stone; mother, Trudy Scheschowitz; mother-in-law, Lee DeSantis; brother, David Scheschowitz; brother-in-law Russell DeSantis and his wife, Violet; brother-in-law Brian DeSantis and his wife, Donna; sister-in-law Michelle Gonzales and her husband, Jimmy; sister-in-law Danielle Campbell and her husband, Ernie; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends. He was predeceased by his father, Tony Scheschowitz, and father-in-law, Michael DeSantis.

Born in Queens, he moved to Ridge as a teenager, graduating from Longwood High School. Richard was a lifelong resident of Long Island, although he maintained a home in Delaware and planned to retire there.

Richard was a registered nurse. A man of many interests, Richard enjoyed spending time outdoors, where he worked in his garden and handcrafted various woodworking projects. His home is filled with pieces he designed or breathed new life into. One of his drawings was featured on the official T-shirt of Duck Pond Day in Wading River two years in a row. Richard was an animal lover. He enjoyed an eclectic collection of music.

Richard will be forever missed and forever loved.

The family received visitors Sept. 20 at Alexander-Rothwell Funeral Home in Wading River. A funeral service was held Sept. 21 at St. John the Baptist R.C. Church in Wading River.

Arline Smith Urevich

Former Riverhead resident Arline Smith Urevich, 81, passed away after a brief illness on Sept. 18, 2017, at White Oak of Waxhaw in North Carolina.

She was born Oct. 16, 1935, to Evelyn and Marshall R. Smith in Manhattan. She was also predeceased by her beloved son, John Marshall Urevich and her brother, Marshall J. Smith.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, John Urevich; daughter, Laura Minsk and her husband, David of Waxhaw, N.C. along with her grandchildren, Daniel, Justin and Trisha, and daughter-in-law, Catherine Urevich.; sisters, Lorraine Smith of Toms River, N.J., Gladys MacKay of Monroe, N.Y. and Evelyn Cahill of Matthews, N.C.

Arline was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to garden and cook for her family. Before her retirement, she was a USDA poultry grader at the largest duck plant on Long Island and an accounts payable clerk at Amp/Akso, a circuit board manufacturing plant.

Arline enjoyed attending Opera Carolina with her family. She was an active member of Mecklenburg Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.

A Celebration of Life service will be held for close friends and family members in October.

Bianca Christina Buttafuoco

Former Mattituck resident Bianca Christina Buttafuoco of Jamesport died Aug. 5. She was 36. 

The daughter of Wendy and Santo J. Buttafuoco, she was born April 9, 1981, in Head of the Harbor.

Ms. Buttafuoco graduated from Mattituck High School in 1999 and received a bachelor’s degree in photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Family members said she loved photography, and was a freelance photographer for books and fitness magazines.

She is survived by her parents and brother, Santo Jr.

Funeral services took place Aug. 12 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church.

Thomas William Carter III

Former Riverhead resident Thomas William Carter III of Heathsville, Va., died Sept. 20. He was 73.

The son of Elizabeth “Betty” and Thomas Carter Jr., he was born Dec. 5, 1943, and graduated from Riverhead High School in 1961.

Mr. Carter served his country in the military until his retirement in 1985. During his service he completed two combat tours in Vietnam, with multiple awards for gallantry, flying over 400 combat missions. He completed U.S. Navy Test Pilot School and two tours as a test pilot, served on the staff of the Board of Inspection and Survey, and culminated his career with his assignment in the office of the Director, Operational Test and Evaluation. He was awarded the Secretary of Defense Exceptional Civilian Service Award in 1996. Mr. Carter retired in 2014 after 25 years with DOT&E. Family members said he was also a “master carpenter.”

Mr. Carter is survived by his wife, Jane Connor Carter; children, Kimberly Summy, Scott Carter, Elizabeth Randall and Sarah Jarboe; five grandsons; sisters Ann Henderson and Molly Carter; and many extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his sister Jane Hayes Carter.

A service was held Sept. 26 at Quantico Marine Memorial Chapel. Burial with full military honors followed at Quantico National Cemetery.

Ariana Mae Chute

Ariana Mae Chute of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., formerly of Southold, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017, at the tender age of 10 after a lifelong struggle with muscular dystrophy.

Anyone that knew her knows that she was a firecracker not to be messed with. She was a sweet girl and will be greatly missed by all whose lives she came into contact with. We are comforted knowing that she has joined her Nana, Tata and Grandpa Connie and is running around in Heaven no longer in any discomfort or pain.

She is survived by her loving mother, Shannon, and the best care giver Ari could have, her stepfather, Eddie; her Gia, Michelle Eckhardt; her aunts and uncles, Michael and Lynn Eckhardt and Melissa and Tim McGowan, and by her cousins, Kaela, Collin, Jeremy, Nicholas and Justin.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Sept. 29 from 3 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold, officiated by Father Kenneth Hand.

Harold Niegocki, age 65, passed away Sept. 26, 2017, at his residence in Riverhead 

He was born Oct. 1, 1951, in Port Jefferson to Michael Anthony Niegocki and Beatrice Gunderso.

Harold worked as a postal carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Sag Harbor. He enjoyed restoring cars, running marathons, gardening, the outdoors, kayaking, hiking and the New York Yankees.

He is survived by his significant other, Christine Perry; sisters, Lana Niegocki, Irene Terry, Frances Colleran and Donna Niegocki; brother, Thomas Niegocki; nieces and nephews, Lynn Kempf, Peter Hicks, Patrick Colleran, Amy Munoz, Dawn Latham, Melanie Hughes, Michael Niegocki, Richard Terry and Katie Vaccaro. He is also survived by many great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Sept. 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a funeral service will be held at 8 p.m.

Bertha Harris of Aquebogue died Sept. 27 at her home. She was 102.

The daughter of Wokciech and Pauline Troyan, she was born Aug. 28, 1915, in Greenport.

Ms. Harris was a homemaker and a member of St. Isidore R.C. Church Altar Rosary Society in Riverhead and a member of prayer groups.

Predeceased by her daughter, Patricia, 2015, she is survived by her grandson, Richard Edwards of North Carolina and many extended family and friends.

The family will receive visitors Monday, Oct. 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Donations may be made St. Isidore R.C. Church.

Charlotte Marie Lademann

Charlotte Marie Lademann of Southold died on Sept. 30, 2017, at Medford Multicare Ce­­nter after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 83 years old.   Born to George and Charlotte Smith of Southold on Sept. 19, 1934, she attended Southold High School.

Ms. Lademann enjoyed golfing, gardening, and had a great love for all animals. She also enjoyed dining at many of the North Fork’s restaurants and attending classical music concerts.

Predeceased by her husband Edward Lademann in 2002 and her son Mark in 1989, she is survived by her son Kevin; her daughter, Lori Shelly, and three grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Oct. 4, at 1:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Southold, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Peter J. Kelley.

Memorial demotions made to North Fork Animal Welfare League would be appreciated.

DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold is assisting the family.
