Frances LoPresti

Frances LoPresti of Southold died at her home Feb. 25, 2018, at the age of 96.

She was born Feb. 17, 1922, in Brooklyn to Dominic and Lena (Piazza) Tralongo and graduated from St. Brendan’s High School in Brooklyn.

Formerly of Setauket and Hauppauge, she had been a manager for Abraham & Strauss.

She has lived on the North Fork for the past 42 years. She was a member of St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold and very active in the Rosary Society. She also ran classes in folk art/tole painting.

Surviving are a stepson and daughter-in-law: Jeff and Mary Sheffield of Freeport; four grandchildren: Allison Bustavanos, Susan Agostini, Brian Sheffield and Laura Bustamante; two great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews, Leonard Green of Cutchogue, Regina Martin of Cutchogue, Paul Raso of Southold, Jeanne Fallot of Riverhead and Mary Peabody of Wareham, Mass. She was predeceased by husbands Clarence Robert Burroughs, Gilbert Sheffield and Charles LoPresti.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, March 4, from 2 to 5 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, March 5 at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church, presided by Father John Barrett. Interment will follow at St. Charles R.C. Cemetery in Farmingdale.

Charlotte Klodaski

Charlotte Klodaski, 90, of Riverhead died Feb. 26.

The daughter of Ignacius Wiertel and Stella (Muchowski), she was born Sept. 16, 1927, in Middlesex, N.J.

Ms. Klodaski attended high school and was a homemaker.

Predeceased by her husband, Konstanty and her son, Mark, Ms. Klodaski is survived by her daughters, Barbara and Diane.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, March 1, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at 9:15 a.m. Friday, March 2, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Deborah Anne Wisowaty

Deborah Anne Wisowaty of Cutchogue passed away Feb. 28 at the age of 57. She succumbed to pancreatic cancer at her sister’s and brother-in-law’s home, surrounded by loving family.

Deborah was born Dec. 22, 1960, along with her twin brother, Donald Wilcenski (Lauren) of Southold. She is also survived by her heartbroken parents, John and Jeannette Wilcenski of Mattituck; her brother John Wilcenski Jr. (Susan) of Westhampton and his twin sister, Patricia Granneman (Bill) of Califon, N.J., and Cutchogue; as well as four nieces, three nephews, and many rescued pets. Deb was predeceased by her former husband, Edward Wisowaty.

Deborah was employed at Stidd Systems in Greenport for the past 22 years. She was both hardworking and compassionately selfless. In her spare time, Deborah cared for those in need. Her love of animals was her life’s work as she tended to a variety of rescues both at home and locally.

Deborah is loved and cherished by her family, friends and community. She touched the lives of many and made a positive, resounding impact on this earth.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, March 8, from 3 to 8 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, March 9, at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue.

Memorial donations can be made in Deborah’s name to East End Hospice, SAVES, Inc. or North Fork Animal Welfare League.

Sheila Kowalski

Sheila Kowalski, former longtime resident of Jamesport and Southold, passed away Sunday Feb. 25, 2018, in Southbury, Conn. at the age of 94.

Sheila was born in Kent, England where, during the height of World War II, she met her future husband, Benjamin Kowalski, who passed in 2012.

Sheila received a degree in art from Naugatuck Community College, specializing in watercolors when she was in her late 70s.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen and husband, Terry Fleming; son Danny, and wife, Susan Kowalski; granddaughter, Jenny and husband, Gabe Bowne and great-granddaughters, Sophie and Lilly Bowne.

Services were held Feb. 28 at Munson-Lovetere Funeral Home in Southbury, Conn. with internment March 3 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church Cemetery in Riverhead.

Olga Lomaga

Olga Lomaga, age 95, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2018, surrounded by family. She was a lifelong resident of Mattituck, N.Y., born at home to John and Anne (Pastuchen) Lomaga. She was the youngest of five children, raised on a potato farm with her siblings, Stephie, Frank, Julia and George.

Upon graduation from Mattituck High School in 1941, she worked at the Pandora Gift shop in Mattituck and Hazeltine in Riverhead.

Olga was passionate in keeping her Ukrainian heritage alive and taught and shared many special ethnic food/family recipes. She was also a gifted artist in Pysanky, the decoration of Ukrainian Easter eggs using traditional folk designs. She taught classes in making these eggs at many places on Long Island.

As a docent at the Hallockville Museum Farm in Riverhead, she was actively involved in giving tours, conducting school programs and imparting her vast knowledge of life on the farm.

In addition she enjoyed traveling with family and collected memorabilia from friends’ and families’ travels. Her collection was displayed monthly at the Mattituck post office.

She was a life member of the Marion Council Columbiettes.

Olga is survived by six nieces and nephews: Evelyn Stachnik, Mary Anne Federico, Janet Lomaga, Harry Denys, George Lomaga and John Lomaga. She will be forever remembered by her numerous great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to all the wonderful caring staff at the Westhampton Care Center.

Visiting hours and a celebration of Olga’s life were held March 5 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral Mass took place March 5 at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Riverhead. Burial followed at the family plot at St. John’s Cemetery.

Memorial donations in honor of Olga may be made to the Hallockville Museum Farm, 6038 Sound Ave., Riverhead, NY 11901.

Craig A. Stewart

Craig A. Stewart of Riverhead died March 3 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 52. 

The son of Randall Stewart and Mary (Dabney) Hopkins, he was born July 2, 1965, in Riverhead and graduated from Riverhead High School in 1983.

Mr. Stewart served in the U.S. Navy from 1988 to 1992.

He worked as a salesman at P.C. Richard & Son in Riverhead and Eagle Auto Mall and was a transporter at PBMC.

Family members said he enjoyed art, guitar playing, music and NASCAR.

Mr. Stewart is survived by his children, Dorothea and Paige, both of Riverhead; siblings, Deborah Buyukdeniz and James, both of Riverhead; his father, Randall, of Washington; his mother, Mary Hopkins of Riverhead; stepfather, Irvin Hopkins of Del.; grandmother, Dorothea Dabney of Riverhead and his nephew, Travis Hopkins-Walker.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, March 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Francis Ficner

Francis “Frank” Ficner of Mattituck passed away peacefully March 3, 2018, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 90.

He was born April 12, 1927, in Cutchogue to Steven and Fannie (Zuhoski) Ficner. Frank served in the U.S. Marines prior to marrying Bernice (Rogers) on May 1, 1955.

Frank was a lifelong resident of the North Fork. He loved gardening and spending time with his family. He had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing for everyone. He was often heard singing at funeral and Sunday masses.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice; his children, Maryann Ficner of Mattituck, Steven (Beth) Ficner of Mattituck, Patricia (Bill) Liggan of Smithtown, Joanne (Chris) Danzer of St. Helena, Calif.; six grandchildren: Steven Ficner, Chelsea Ficner, Courtney Ficner, Eddie Liggan, Ryan Danzer and Tyler Danzer and a sister Dorothy Chituk.

The family will receive visitors Friday, March 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 10, at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue, officiated by Father Mariusz Gorazd. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Donations in Frank’s memory may be made to the Mattituck Fire Department or East End Hospice.

Arthur Earl West Jr.

Arthur Earl West Jr. of Laurel died at his home March 6 at the age of 89.

He was born in Lynbrook, N.Y., on Jan. 7, 1928, to Lillian (Delgado) and Arthur West and later educated at Central High School in Valley Stream and St. John’s University, where he received his B.A. in business.

For 35 years, he was an independent insurance agent and started his own insurance agency, Wood & West, in the Valley Stream area with his business partner, Harry Wood.

He played college baseball at St. John’s University, playing in the College World Series in 1949. He also played professionally, reaching the Triple A level for the Boston Red Sox Organization. He was also a mainstay in the “wooden bat” Claude Charles softball league in Valley Stream for 40-plus years.

He enjoyed membership in the Valley Stream Lions Club and served on the board of North Fork Country Club in Cutchogue. He served in the Army during the Korean War.

A former member of Holy Name of Mary Church in Valley Stream, he was a member of Sacred Heart R.C. Church in Mattituck.

Formerly of Valley Stream, he had been a resident of the North Fork for the past 26 years.

He is survived by his wife, Marion, whom he married March 29, 1952, at Holy Name of Mary Church in Valley Stream; four children: Tom, Susan, James and Kevin; a brother, James, of Baiting Hollow; eight grandchildren: Michelle West, Danny West, Matthew Guido, Danielle Guido, Amanda West, Alix West, Austin West and Vivienne West; and his children’s spouses, Phil Guido, Stephanie West and Elaine Carr.

The family will receive friends today, Thursday, March 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, March 9, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt officiating. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to East End Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Association would be appreciated. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Barbara M. Anderson

Barbara M. Anderson of Jamesport died March 8 at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore. She was 82. 

The daughter of John and Mary (Kostyra) Sabat, she was born Oct. 27, 1935, and graduated from Riverhead High School.

Ms. Anderson worked as a secretary for orthodontist Dr. Neilens and was the office manager at East End Asphalt.

She was a member of the St. Isidore R.C. Church Altar Rosary Society and sang in the church choir.

Family members said her family and her church were most important to her.

Ms. Anderson is survived by her husband, John; her daughters Karen Ivins, Marie Tribuzio, Denise Anderson-Bayh and Annette Brewer and eight grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, March 11, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral Mass will take place at 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 12, at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Ann L. Dunkirk

Longtime South Jamesport resident Ann L. Dunkirk died March 7 in South Jamesport. She was 86. 

The daughter of John and Olga (Olsen) Schafer, she was born July, 17, 1931, in Greenport and graduated from Greenport High School.

Ms. Dunkirk was a homemaker who volunteered at Central Suffolk Hospital in Riverhead.

Family members said she enjoyed making crafts with the Homemakers Club and loved the beach.

Predeceased by her husband, William D. Dunkirk on Dec. 13, 2001, and her son, Roger L. Tuthill in 1980, Ms. Dunkirk is survived by her significant other, Gerret “Gerry” Conover; her children, Robert D. Dunkirk (Melody), Linda J. McRae (Paul), Linda M. Donahue (John), William P. Dunkirk (Andrea), Donald L. Tuthill (Laurin), Sharon A. Mitrani (Joseph) and Steven J. Tuthill (Diane); 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Saturday, March 17, from 2 to 6 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Longtime Riverhead resident Jeannette Levasseur died March 9 in Riverhead. 

The daughter of Alma (Lang) and Romeo Boucher, she was born Nov. 25, 1936, in Canada.

Ms. Levasseur was a homemaker who enjoyed playing cards, going to the library, traveling and spending time with family.

Predeceased by her husband, Albert and son Robert; Ms. Levasseur is survived by her sons Richard, Patrick and Peter; her daughter, Lisa Schlect; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, March 11, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 12, at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Cremation will be private.

Rose M. Hardison

Rose M. Hardison, 96, lifelong resident of South Jamesport, a respected and avid bay woman, passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2018.

Rose was born July 25, 1921, to the late Adam Kowalski and Rose Marion Raciniewski (Rogers) Kowalski. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Shelton Hardison and her brothers, Adam “Chip” and Benjamin Kowalski.

Rose served in the U.S. Navy in World War II as an aviation machinist mate third class where she was an airport mechanic inspector for TBMs, TBYs, Corsairs and Wildcats. She thoroughly enjoyed clamming, scalloping and fishing out on the bay for years, spending many of them as the only full-time female scalloper in the area. There was no challenge she wasn’t willing to take on.

Mrs. Hardison is survived by her children, Carolyn (Michael) Fletcher of The Plains, Va., Diane Ekster of New Suffolk, Robert Hardison of Lake Jackson, Texas, and Frances Wood. Rose is also survived by her seven grandchildren; Dave and Sara Raynor, Emily Fletcher, Christopher and Jonathan Hardison, Aaron and Marc DeLyser, five great-grandchildren and her beloved dog, Angel.

The family received friends March 8 at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where religious services were held, officiated by Father Mariusz Gorazd. Interment with U.S. Navy honors took place March 9 at Calverton National Cemetery.

Audrey H. Rackett

Audrey H. Rackett, 85, of Carteret, N.J, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at her daughter’s home  March 10, 2018. 

The daughter of William and Helen (Skorpil) Martin, she was born Audrey H. Martin June 26, 1932, in Woodhaven (Queens), and grew up in St. Albans, N.Y.  On May 19, 1956, Audrey and her husband, Bruce, were married and began their lives together in Southold, before settling in Carteret, N.J. to raise their family. Later in life, Audrey obtained her associate degree in nursing, and worked as a registered nurse for Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy, NJ, for approximately 25 years before retiring.

She was predeceased by her parents, William and Helen (Skorpil) Martin, her beloved husband, Bruce Rackett, and her dear brother, William E. Martin. Audrey is survived by her loving children, Cheryl L. Halpin and her partner, Michelle Fagan, of Cliffwood, N.J., Allison Craven and her husband, Edward, of Toms River, N.J., Jody Nicholson and her husband, Raymond, of Marlboro, N.J., Bruce Rackett and his wife, Melodi, of Long Branch, N.J., Stacey Keating and her husband, John, of Marlboro, N.J., Jamie Rackett and his wife, Michelle, of Aberdeen, N.J., Kip Rackett and his wife, Cheryl, of Monroe, NJ., Denny Rackett and his wife, Michele, of Jensen Beach, Fla., and Brett Racket and his wife, Robin, of Woodbridge, N.J. She is also survived by her dear sister-in-law, Dorothy Martin of Southold, along with 24 cherished grandchildren, and 10 adored great-grandchildren. Audrey will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

The family received visitors March 13 at Shore Point Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. in Hazlet, NJ.  A church service was offered March 14 at First Presbyterian Church, Southhold. Interment followed at East Marion Cemetery.

Judith Smith

Judith Smith was the youngest of four daughters born to Ida and Samuel Gutterman in Brownsville, Brooklyn, on Feb. 3, 1927. She was the daughter of immigrant parents.

In 1946, Judith married Seymour Smith, who predeceased her in 1982. She later married Victor Hettena of Woodmere, N.Y., where they lived following her many years of living in Brooklyn and Rockaway Beach. In 2003 she moved to Mattituck to live with her son, Ronald and his family. Judith passed away peacefully in the loving presence of family and friends at her home on March 12, 2018. She was 91 years old.

Judith’s love for travel brought her throughout Europe and the Middle East. She often told the story of being trapped in a dust storm in Egypt. Known for her sense of humor, her beautiful smile and good heart, Judith found time to participate in Congregation Tifereth Israel in Greenport and as a CAST volunteer when she moved to Mattituck. She was a regular at Mattituck-Laurel Library. She had a passion for reading and enjoyed attending Rosemary’s yoga classes and other activities at the library. She loved to walk and spend time at the beach. Judith attended every concert, play, soccer game and event for her grandchildren in the Mattituck-Cutchogue School District. You could hear her in the stands yelling “You go, girl!” Everyone knew Judith and welcomed her with a smile and an arm to hold wherever she went in town.

Judith worked as a senior administrative assistant at Merrill Lynch in Manhattan for 30 years and was a valued employee and acknowledged for her many contributions.

Judith is survived by her son, Ronald; daughter-in-law, Anne; and grandchildren, Jacob, Rebekah and Caleb. Her family included the wonderful team at Senior Helpers, with her best friend Mala at her side during the last year of her life.

She was cared for with the love and support of Dr. Jay Slotkin, Rabbi Barbara Sheryll and the team from East End Hospice. Her family is truly grateful for their love and support. They are especially grateful to the close friends who ministered to her during the final weeks. Judith was easy to love and appreciated the love of others.

There will be a private funeral and burial 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 16, at Old Montefiore Cemetery in Queens. Rabbi Howard Diamond will conduct the service.

The family is requesting donations be made in Judith’s memory to the Friends of Mattituck-Laurel Library and East End Hospice.

Michael A. Esposito

Former Riverhead resident Michael A. Esposito, 92, of Patchogue, died March 14 at Southampton Hospital. 

The son of Theresa (Pagano) and Luigi Esposito, he was born June 23, 1925, in Brooklyn.

Mr. Esposito served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946.

In 1983, Mr. Esposito ran for Riverhead Supervisor.

He was the owner of Mike’s Lounge, “Mike Esposito’s Restaurant” in Flanders and was a former restaurant association president.

Family members said Mr. Esposito sponsored many sports teams, including baseball, bowling, dart leagues, and womens’ softball teams. He also donated uniforms to the St. John’s track team.

Predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, in 2013, Mr. Esposito is survived by his son, Louis, and his granddaughter, Alexandra Mikaela Esposito.

The family will receive visitors Friday, March 16, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17, at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Inurnment with military honors will take place Monday, March 19, at Calverton National Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to gather at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m.

Lawrence Taylor

Lawrence Taylor of Calverton died March 15 at the Kanas Center for Hospice in Quiogue. He was 86. 

The son of Lawrence and Annette Taylor, he was born July 5, 1931, in Riverhead.

Mr. Taylor served in the U.S. Army from 1949 to 1953 and was a member of the Riverhead American Legion.

Mr. Taylor was a 62-year member of the Riverhead Fire Department, a member of the Ironman Drill Team and an ex-captain of the Eagle Company. He was also a member of the Riverhead Polish Independence Club.

He worked as an electrician for Riverhead Town

Family members said he enjoyed golf, fishing, bowling and darts.

Predeceased by his sister Dorothy Ovisniak and brother Thomas Taylor, Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife, Bertha (Pawluczyk), of Calverton; his children, Lawrence Jr. of Nevada and Barbara Youngs (Rick McRae); his brothers Robert, of Aquebogue and Raymond, of Riverhead and grandson, Bryan.

The family received visitors March 18 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service took place March 19 at St Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Amanda Jane Brown

Lifelong Riverhead resident Amanda Jane Brown died March 11 at the Hamptons Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Southampton. She was 75.

The daughter of Lucy Bartlett, she was born July 20, 1942, in Aquebogue and attended Riverhead High School.

She worked for New York Telephone Company.

Ms. Brown was involved with many local organizations including, Project Head Start, the Women’s Club of Riverhead, Senior Helpers of Cutchogue, Fresh Pond Manufactured Homeowners Association, where she served as a secretary, Board of Elections, where she volunteered as an inspector/chairperson and coordinator, Milbrook Gables Civic Association, where she was a co-founder, FBC Progressive Women where she served as president, trustee and was a member of the floral club, the Get-A-Way travel club, Section 8 Board of Directors, where she served as president, TOPS, where she was president, Worthy Matron of the Tyre Chapter 62 and secretary, Esther Court 12, where she was a Most Ancient Matron and also served as secretary and treasurer, Abu Bekr Court 74, where she was recordress and served on several committees, and Al Maseer 226, where she was a charter member. She also volunteered at Peconic Bay Medical Center, visited the sick and helped others get registered to vote.

Family members said she enjoyed church, volunteering, event planning and traveling.

Predeceased by her husband, Charles Brown, Ms. Brown is survived by her daughters, Pamela Langhorne, Frederica Rollins and Barbara Langhorne; her son, Charles Brown Jr.; six children and one great-grandchild.

The family received visitors March 15 at Friendship Baptist Church in Riverhead. A funeral service took place March 16 at the church.

Arrangements were in the care of McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Ninfa H. Campbell

Ninfa H. Campbell of Riverhead died March 15 at Southampton Hospital. She was 61. 

The daughter of Freddie and Mayme Bais, she was born Aug. 8, 1956, in Chicago.

On May 26, 1979, she married Richard Campbell in Kanoza Lake, N.Y.

Ms. Campbell was a former manager for 7-11 in Riverhead.

She was member of the Riverhead Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and was life member of the Riverhead Ambulance Corps.

Family members said she enjoyed camping, arts and crafts and cake decorating.

Predeceased by her parents, Ms. Campbell is survived by her husband; her brothers, William and Freddie Bais and her sisters, Nina, Christy and Sherry.

The family will receive visitors Monday, March 19, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, at the funeral home. Cremation will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Mario N. Belletti

Mario N. Belletti of Mattituck died March 14, 2018. He was 89.

Born Oct. 17, 1928, in New York City to Rita (St. Clear) and William Belletti, he is survived by three children: Vincent of Flanders, William of Bay Shore and Mary Griffin of Mattituck; eight grandchildren: Janessa, Vicky, Samantha, Allie, Nick, Robert, Thomas and Justina, and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Florence and siblings, Joseph Norton, Rita and Una.

Mario served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947 and was part of the tank retrieval guard at Nuremberg Trails, which was part of the military force sent in to clean up and dismantle Auschwitz. He married Florence in 1955 and together they made their home in Mattituck. Prior to living in Mattituck for the past 42 years, he lived in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. He was a self-employed commercial fisherman and long distance truck driver for 55 years. He was also a founding member of the New York Travelers Association.

Graveside services with U.S. Army honors were conducted March 17 at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue by Father Peter Garry.

DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck assisted in the family.

Walter Gatz

Walter Gatz of Mattituck passed away March 8, 2018. He was 85. 

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 60 years, Marilyn. He was the loving father of Laurie (Vito) Italia, Jeffrey (Mary) Gatz, Peter (Valerie) Gatz and Donald (Jacqueline) Gatz. He was the cherished grandfather of Jennifer, Courtney, Nicolas, Brianne, Abigail, Shannon, Tara, Kimberly, Kacee, Ian, D.J., Tyler, Marisa and great-grandfather of Owen and Levi. He is also survived by his brother George Gatz of Florida and Eleanor Kowalski of Riverhead.

Walter was a successful landscape contractor, starting his own business 60 years ago.  He coached and sponsored many youth sports teams in Mattituck and Riverhead. Of his many hobbies and interests over the years, his favorites always involved his family.

His generosity, sense of humor and kind heart will be deeply missed.

The family received visitors March 11 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated March 12 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, officiated by Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt. Interment followed at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.
