John S. Sobieray

Lifelong North Fork resident John S. Sobieray, passed away April 4. He was 83.

John was a devoted husband and father who enjoyed NASCAR and old movies.

He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Hazel Worthington Sobieray. He is survived by his two children, John Sobieray and Deborah Tyler and her husband, Rusty, all of Mattituck; two grandchildren, Megan and Michael, and a great-grandson, MJ.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 9 at Cutchogue Cemetery.

Memorial donations to North Fork Animal Welfare League would be appreciated.

DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck is assisting the family.

Shirley M. Edwards of Aquebogue passed away at Jensen Beach “The Little”, St. Lucie County, Fla. on April 1, 2018.

She was the beloved wife of the late Charles; loving mother of Gail, Susan, Shirley (Lawrence) Doscinski, Jeane (Thomas) Rusewicz, and the late Charles (Susan); adored grandmother of nine and great-grandmother of seven and dear sister of the late Joan Ratzel.

The family will receive visitors Monday, April, 9, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. A prayer service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday April 10, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Baiting Hollow Cemetery.

Robert F. Sledzieski, formerly of of Riverhead, died April 7. He was 72.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, April 11, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 12, at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue.

Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Byron Mathias Lindsay

Byron Mathias Lindsay of Saint Marie, Mont., formerly of Riverhead, N.Y., died Sunday, March 18, 2018.

Byron was born in Wheaton, Minn., on Jan. 11, 1930, to Mathias and Blanche (Sauby) Lindsay. He grew up on the family farm in Rosholt, S.D., graduated from Sisseton High School in 1947 and joined the Air Force on April 30, 1950.

On June 24, 1955, Byron married Elinor Tyte, daughter of Arthur Milton and Marian (Downs) Tyte, at First United Methodist Church in Riverhead. While in the military, Byron resided with his family in England, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Illinois, Alaska, Mississippi and New York. Byron retired after 20-plus years in the Air Force on Sept. 30, 1971, after which time the family resided in Riverhead.

Byron worked for Sears Service Center and was a member of the Roanoke Lodge 462 IOOF, Veritas Rebekah Lodge 167, Riverhead Moose Lodge and was treasurer of the Methodist church.

In 1990, Byron and Elinor retired to Saint Marie, where he became active in the Glasgow Methodist Church, Masons, Shriners, Odd Fellows and Rebekahs. Byron served as grand master of the State of Montana Odd Fellows from 2002 to 2003.

Byron is survived by his wife, Elinor; three daughters and one son: Sandra Goleski of Riverhead, Loretta (Mark) Goldberg of Peoria, Ariz., Deanna (Don) Harter of Alvin, Texas, and David (Carmen) of Towson, Md.; 15 grandchildren: Jeffrey (Monika) Odell, John Goleski, Nicole Goleski, Matthew (Kate) Goldberg, Allison Goldberg, Shelley Goldberg, Emilie (Brian) McDonald, Craig (Erica) Lindsay, Nicholas Harter, D.J. Harter, Tyler Lindsay, Mia Lindsay, Maddox Lindsay, Lily Lindsay and Violet Lindsay; and four great-grandchildren: Marie Sapp, Raina McDonald, Kaiden McDonald and Charles Goldberg. Byron is also survived by two sisters: Marilyn Meyer of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Marlys (Gene) Nelson of Stillwater, Minn. Byron was predeceased by his parents; three sisters: Virginia Lehrke, Lorene Knutson and Emerald Tasa; and one brother, Arwin Lindsay.

Visitation and a memorial service will be held Saturday, May 5, and Sunday, May 6, at Bell Mortuary in Glasgow, Mont.

Memorial donations in Byron’s name may be made to Riverhead United Methodist Church, 204 East Main St., Riverhead, NY 11901.

Emilia M. Solla

Emilia M. (Skorobohaty) Solla, age 94, of Riverhead, L.I., N.Y., passed away April 9, 2018, in River Terrace Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Lancaster, Mass.

Emilia’s mother, Maryanna (Drope) Skorobohaty, and father, Anthony Skorobohaty, were the parents of six children who came to this country for a better life from Poland and got their citizenship. Emilia was the youngest of six children, all now deceased. There were brothers Stanley Skorobohaty and John Skorobohaty, and sisters Anita Stachnik, Mary Huldack and Valeria Guzek.

Bobka and gah-Dek came to this country from Poland and raised this beautiful family. We are now four generations strong, with cousins all over the United States, thankful for our freedom and proud to say we are Americans. Thank you Bobka and gah-Dek for our freedom.

Emilia worked most of her life in aviation and retired from Northrop Grumman Corporation of Calverton, L.I., N.Y.

Emilia spent the last eight years with her daughter in Ashby, Mass. She enjoyed shopping and spending time by the ocean and Long Island Sound. She loved children and they loved her. She had a soft heart for animals, loved watching golf and spending special time watching the Celtics with great-grandson Justin. Ryan Beals gave her a lot of love and time. She told him he was her very special friend. That friendship grew from the time he was a young boy.

Emilia is survived by her daughter, Patricia Beals and husband, Donald; her granddaughters, Coleen Lowe and husband, Michael, of Sterling Mass., and Cheryl Abrahamian and husband, Fred, of McDonough Ga., four great grandchildren: Morgan Lowe, Justin Lowe, Jared Abrahamian and Joshua Abrahamian and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services and burial are private. There are no calling hours.

Rose T. Rusin

Rose T. Rusin passed away April 4, 2018, at the age of 95, surrounded by her loved ones at her residence in Calverton, N.Y.

She was born in Riverhead, N.Y., to Mikolaj and Mary Tysz. She graduated Riverhead High School on June 25, 1940, and worked for Farm Credit Association for over 45 years.

In 1947, she married Albert Rusin of Port Jefferson, N.Y. and they had two children: David A. Rusin and Linda Rusin (Yox).

During her retirement, Rose enjoyed traveling and visited her daughter and granddaughter in California frequently.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Rusin Yox and son-in-law, Robert Yox of Walnut Creek, Calif.; her granddaughter, Jessica Rose Yox of Alameda, Calif., her sister, Nellie J. Tysz of Calverton, and her nieces and nephews.

Rose was genuinely kind, yet strong and will be greatly missed by anyone who knew her.

The family received visitors April 8 at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. The Funeral and Mass at took place April 9 at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Riverhead. Burial took place at St. Isidore R.C. Church Cemetery in Riverhead.

Frederick Pradon

Frederick Pradon

Former Calverton resident Frederick Pradon passed away peacefully on March 30, 2018, near his home in East Arlington, Vt. He was 88.

Mr. Pradon was a combat veteran, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He saw action at the Inchon landing, the liberation of Seoul, and the battle for the Chosin Resevior.

An avid naturalist and wildlife photographer, he loved the fresh and salt waters of  Long Island and its woodlands. He loved and respected the natural environment and all that it offered. For 26 years, he patrolled Long Island’s East End as a Game Warden with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation; his primary patrol sector in the township of Riverhead. He loved his occupation and was well-respected in the community. He retired in 1985.

Predeceased by his wife Kathleen Pradon, he is survived by his wife, Dorothy Cummings Pradon of East Arlington, Vt., and his daughter and son-in-law, Donna Lynn and Stephen Kuhl of Calverton.

Mr. Pradon was buried with military honors on April 5 at Calverton National Cemetery.

Arrangements were in the care of McLaughlin-Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Memorial donations may be made to Nature Conservancy Long Island, or the North Fork Animal Welfare League.

Hallock C. Kwasna

Riverhead resident Hallock C. Kwasna passed away peacefully at the Kanas Center for Hospice in Quiogue on Wednesday, April 5. He was 88 years old. 

The son of Charles and Dorothy Kwasna, he was born Oct. 27, 1929.

He was the past owner of Katrinka Deli in Riverhead and Hal’s Main Street Deli, also in Riverhead.

Predeceased by his parents, he is survived by his wife of 67 years, Constance R. (Brooks) Kwasna of Riverhead; his sister, Dorothy McClellan of California, his five sons: Hallock Jr., Mark, Robert, Raymond and John and their families, including 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Hallock was a member and two-time president of Jamesport Lions Club. He enjoyed bowling and jigsaw puzzles, along with spending time with his family and friends.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, April 11, from 10 am to noon at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggested donations to East End Hospice in his name .

He will be missed by many.

John A. Kruszon Jr.

John A. Kruszon Jr. of Riverhead died April 8 at Southside Hospital. He was 88. 

The son of John A. and Sophie (Ruskowski) Kruszon, he was born March 28, 1930, in Riverhead and graduated from Riverhead High School in 1947.

Mr. Kruszon served in the U.S. Air Force. He worked as a bookkeeper for A.C. Carpenter and the Long Island Cauliflower Association.

In 1952, he married Mary Ann Strebel at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead.

Mr. Kruszon was a member of Riverhead Lions Club, Riverhead Polish Independence Club and St. Isidore R.C. Church.

Family said he enjoyed golf, bowling and reading.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann “Tootsie,” of Riverhead; his children, John “Skip” (Deborah) of North Carolina, Judith Kruszon (Joe) of Florida, Jane (Ron) Caffrey of Riverhead, James, of Florida, Jacqueline (Rich) Kolodziejski of Riverhead and Joseph (Valerie) of Riverhead; siblings Anne Doroski of Calverton, Thomas, of Riverhead and Peter (Bernadette) of Riverhead; grandchildren, Thomas, Tate, AJ, Jessica and Joseph; great-grandchildren Samantha, Lauren and Katie and great-great-grandchild, Harper. He was predeceased by his siblings Alice and Barbara.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, April 12, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A service will take place at 9:30 a.m. Friday, April 13, at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Christine J. Sargent

Christine J. Sargent passed away on the late evening of April 92018, with her hand held lovingly. She was surrounded by close friends and family during her final hours and at peace after a long battle. She fought hard like the person we all knew.

Chrissie Sargent retired from the Riverhead Police Department as a Public Safety Dispatcher II, after 31 years and 11 days.

Born in Southampton and raised in Aquebogue, Chrissie touched the lives of everyone she knew and was always there to lend a hand to a person in need.

Chrissie was an avid photographer and one of the most active volunteers of Eastern Long Island’s only Wildlife Hospital: the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center located in Hampton Bays www.wildliferescuecenter.org. Chrissie also volunteered for CARE – The Center for Animal Research and Education located in Bridgeport, Texas, dedicated to the education, rescue and research of large cats -providing permanent homes for mountain lions, African lions, tigers, black and spotted leopards and bobcats.

Christine lived especially for her family, friends and of course, her precious kitties ET and Gracie whom have been adopted by her niece and are in good hands and well loved.

Chrissie had put vivid color into the earth and bells with her lights and jingle in every step; the world will be greyer without her.

She is survived by many friends and family that love her and cherish each memory. The people and animals she has touched and rescued are too many to mention in a paragraph.

Jane Elizabeth Gonsalves Haas, 83, died peacefully at her home in Southold April 11, 2018, after her struggle with dementia.

Born April 21, 1934, Jane was the third oldest of six children of Thomas Gonsalves and Virginia (McCay) Gonsalves, growing up in Baldwin. Having attended Catholic schools all her life, she was a reverent Catholic. Jane graduated as valedictorian from Ladycliff College in Highland, N.Y.

Jane was the wife of John Haas for 50 fun-filled and adventurous years. A proud mother and homemaker extraordinaire of eight: Suzanne (Bill) Connell of Mattituck, Eric (Cinda) Haas of Solomons, Md., Gretchen (deceased), Gordon Haas of East Marion, Karen Haas (Steve Cielatka) of Cutchogue, Virginia (Tom) Beebe of Cutchogue, Elaine Haas of Mattituck, and Katherine Haas of Cutchogue. “Mimi” was also the devoted grandmother of 12, and a great-grandmother of three. Jane’s family and faith were the centerpiece and anchor in her life.

The family will receive visitors Friday, April 13, from 4 to 7 p .m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck. The Rite of Committal will be private.

Margaret M. Sullivan of Southold died April 13. She was 70.

Born Oct. 14, 1947, in Brooklyn, Margaret was the second oldest of five children of Vincent Caragher and Georgeanne (Murphy) Caragher. Growing up in Rockville Center and attending Catholic schools all her life, Margaret received a Bachelor of Arts from Molloy College in 1969 after graduating from St. Agnes High School in 1965.

Margaret married George Sullivan April 18, 1970, and they eventually settled their family in Southold in 1973. Margaret was previously employed by Nassau County as a social worker and most recently at the Southold branch of Capital One Bank for over 20 years.

Margaret was a member of St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold. She was also a member of North Fork Country Club where she enjoyed playing with the “nine holers”.

Margaret is survived by her husband of 47 years, George Sullivan of Southold; her son, Bob Sullivan of Charleston, S.C.; her daughter, Megan Collins and her husband, John Collins of Southold and her three grandchildren: Kevin, Mallaigh and Ryan, as well as her three sisters: Carol Kenneally, Trish Baulch and Maureen Gillen, all of Rockville Center, and her brother, Dan Caragher of Malvern.

Margaret loved her family and especially her grandchildren. We love her dearly and she will be missed by all.

The family received visitors April 16 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated April 17 at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church. Interment followed at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Frances C. “Tootsie” Gatz of Riverhead died April 11 at the Acadia Center in Riverhead. She was 94.

The daughter of Frank and Catherine (Grohoski) Wolgo, she was born Jan. 25, 1924, in Bridgeport, Conn., and graduated from Mattituck High School.

For over 30 years, Ms. Gatz worked at Thrifty Cut Rate in Riverhead.

She was a member of the Polish Town Civic Association and Ladies of the Moose.

Family members said she enjoyed needlecraft and gardening.

Predeceased by her companion, James Jordan, Ms. Gatz is survived by her son, Philip, of Riverhead; her sister, Charlotte Dickerson of Mattituck; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Cremation was private. Arrangements were entrusted to McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Angela C. Johnson of Riverhead died April 14. She was 53. 

The daughter of Neimon Griffin and Doris (Brown) Griffin, she was born Jan. 21, 1965, in Riverhead.

Ms. Johnson was employed as an assembly worker for TruTech in Riverhead.

Family members said she enjoyed playing bingo and cards, fishing and family events.

Predeceased by her husband, Wayne, in 2008, Ms. Johnson is survived by her children, Wranesha Jenkins, Ladon Johnson, Anthony Johnson, Jaron Johnson, Marcus Johnson and Brianna Johnson; her mother; her siblings Hazel Jackson, Neimon Griffin Jr., Donald Griffin, Richard Griffin, Cynthia Miles, Keith Griffin, Jeffrey Griffin and Ronald Griffin; and two grandchildren. She was predeceased by her siblings Rose Griffin, Lorrie Griffin and Benjamin Griffin.

The family will receive visitors Friday, April 20, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Galilee Church of God in Christ in Riverhead, where a funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at Riverhead Cemetery.

Former Mattituck resident Mary Frances Jermusyk of Riverhead died April 13 at her home. She was 91. 

The daughter of Albert and Agnes (King) Worthington, she was born April 18, 1926, in Mattituck.

For 44 years, Ms. Jermusyk worked as a legal secretary.

She served as a Eucharistic minister and lector at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead.

Family members said she enjoyed baking, reading, movies and dining out.

Predeceased by her husband, Stanley, in 2004, Ms. Jermusyk is survived by her children, Brian (Jane) Jermusyk, Kathleen (John) Bruce, Eileen (Michael) Quigley and Sister Rosemary Jermusyk, OP; her sister, Jane Flatley; six stepgrandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother, Donald Worthington.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, April 17, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead on what would have been Ms. Jermusyk’s 92nd birthday. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Edward King Norton

Edward King Norton born Sept. 2, 1928, longtime East End resident passed away April 16, 2018, quietly at his daughter’s home. He was 89 years old.

He is survived by his son, Gary Norton of Huntington and daughter, Angela Norton of Southold. The proud Patriarch of a beloved large family includes generations of those who will miss him dearly.

The family will receive visitors Friday, April 20, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. Cremation was private.

Louise M. Pietrewicz

Louise M. Pietrewicz was born on Aug. 22, 1928, to Aleksander and Helena (Skonieczny) Jasinski in Sagaponack, N.Y.

Louise worked on the family farm with her siblings while attending Bridgehampton schools until she married in 1950 and moved to Cutchogue.

Louise worked the Pietrewicz family farm with her husband, picking and selling strawberries to the local restaurants and running the family farm stand, while working part time at Terp’s Drug Store in town.

An active member of the Cutchogue Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Louise attended many parades and helped with many CFD functions.

Louise was a hard-working, family-oriented person whose daughter, Sandra, meant the world to her.

At the time of her disappearance on Oct. 6, 1966, Louise was predeceased by her mother, Helena Jasinski. Survivors included her father, Aleksander Jasinski; sisters, Josephine Vinski and Stephanie Krasity; brothers Michael Jasinski and Walter Jasinski and nephews Raymond Helstowski, Theodore Jasinski and Thomas Jasinski, all of whom are now deceased.

Survivors include her only daughter, Sandra Blampied and husband, Walter, of Middletown, N.Y.; brother Leon Jasinski of Riverhead; grandchildren, Janet McCarey (Mark), Michele Giannino (Frank), Kevin Blampied and David Blampied (Laurie); nieces and nephews Beanie Zuhoski (Joseph), Harry Helstowski, Edward Vinski, Michael Jasinski (Winsome), Leon Jasinski Jr. (Dawn), Barbara Swislosky (Mike), Thomas Slavonik (Adrienne) and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Louise Pietrewicz, a life cut short by violence, will be held Saturday, May 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, Shriners Hospitals for Children, or the charity of your choice.

Maria Concetta Esposito

Maria Concetta Esposito, a former 30-year resident of John Wesley Village in Riverhead, died  Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at the Westhampton Care Center. She was 102 and just seven hours before she passed was conversing and singing to loved ones.

She was born in Naples, Italy on Dec. 8, 1915, to Antoinette (Topi) and Anthony DiPalma. At the age of 5, the family came to the United States and settled in the Prospect Park section of Brooklyn.

With very little formal education, she went on to excel in everything she did. She sewed boots and was a professional singer. She also had a creative side sewing clothes for her daughter when she was young.

She was great with numbers and playing Scrabble and will also be remembered as a great cook, baker and flower gardener.

Predeceased by her husband, Felix Joseph Esposito in 1971, she is survived by her children,  Xavier Anthony Esposito of Virginia, Anthony, of Rockville Centre, Felix Michael Esposito of Florida, Francis Dominick Esposito of Oregon and Maria Concetta Schenone of Mattituck; grandchildren, Carmen (Matt), Felix Joseph, Xavier Anthony II (Melissa), Carmen, Connie, Stephen, Anthony Jr., Lucca, Shiloh, Joseph W., Craig and Jared; nine great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by siblings, Peter, Frank, Mike and Felix DiPalma and Mary Conelli.

Maria’s family has chosen to remember her life privately.

Baillet service set

A memorial funeral Mass for Ann P. Baillet of Jamesport will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 28, at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck. Interment will take place at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Ms. Baillet died Jan. 5 at the age of 88.

Arrangements were in the care of Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.

Emmy Johnson Case of Riverhead died April 18, 2018. She was 99.

The daughter of Olaf and Selma Terkelsen Johnson, she was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Arendal, Norway, and moved to Riverhead with her parents at the age of 7. She graduated from Riverhead High School in 1938.

Ms. Case worked for the Department of Agriculture and in 1941, married Andrew Lloyd Case in Riverhead.

She was appointed a special deputy sheriff by Sheriff Charles R. Dominy and Sheriff Frank Gross to work with her deputy sheriff husband on special cases involving females. She also acted as a guard for female jurors during trials. Sheriff Dominy gave her the gold stripe ribbon and told her to purchase a black skirt and sew the ribbon down each side-seam and attach  sheriff’s patches to her white blouses, which she did.

For 25 years, Ms. Case was a secretary at Riverhead Methodist Church. She was the oldest member of the church and a former member of the Rebekah Lodge in Riverhead.

Predeceased by her husband, Ms. Case is survived by her daughter, Georgette Lane Case, and several nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her sister, Ruth Stone, and brothers, John S. Johnson and Robert M. Johnson.

The family received visitors April 20 at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a funeral service was held April 21. Interment took place at Riverhead Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Ever Ready Engine Company No. 3 of the Riverhead Fire Department, 540 Roanoke Ave., Riverhead NY 11901; or the Riverhead Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 204 East Main St., Riverhead.
