Antone F. Bugdin

Antone F. Bugdin, former chief of Riverhead Fire Department, died Aug. 30 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. He was 85.

The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, Sept. 4, from 4 to 8 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 10 a.m. at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Memorial donations to Riverhead Fire Department would be appreciated.

Michele Lynne White

Michele Lynne White

Michele Lynne White, age 42, of Blue Ridge, Ga. passed on Aug. 27, 2018.

Michele was born April 1, 1976, in Riverhead. She graduated from high school in Port Richey, Fla., in 1994. She went on to attend University of South Florida, University of Florida and Stony Brook University, earning three master’s degrees.

Michele loved working with and caring for animals; she worked for Westhampton Beach Animal Hospital and then for Green Acre Farm in Louisiana.

She is survived by her parents, John White and Kathy of Calverton and Deborah and Guy Green of Blue Ridge; sisters Holly, of Riverhead, and Christina Grodski of Calverton; and brother Anthony White Jr. of Riverhead.

She is predeceased by her grandparents, John and Frances White and Theodore and Edda Breitenbach.

A memorial service will be held Monday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to noon at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Burial will follow at St. John’s cemetery in Riverhead at 12:30 p.m.

Johanna J. Boergesson

Johanna J. Boergesson of Southold died at her home Aug. 28, 2018 at the age of 80, after a 12 year bout with cancer.

“Jo” was born Feb. 18, 1938, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Brooklyn to Peter and Annunziata (Nancy) Navaretta, and graduated from Center Moriches High School in 1955.

On Feb. 2, 1957, she married Robert Boergesson at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Center Moriches, and together they made their home in Southold for the past 61 years.

For 39 years, she was a school bus driver for the Southold School District and Sunrise Bus Co.

Jo was also active in the community as a founding member of Southold Schools Athletic Association, as a lifetime member of the PTA, a member of the Red Hat Society, North Fork Chorale, Wednesday morning bowling league and the “Ten Who Dared” ladies’ softball team. She also participated in the CAST holiday fair and candlelight tour at Southold Historical Society and was a dedicated communicant of St. Patrick’s R.C. Church, where she served as past president of the Rosary Altar Society.

Surviving is her husband Bob “Swede”; five children: Cheryle (Thomas), Robert (Christine), Judi (the late Michael), William and Erik (Jennifer); a brother: Peter Navaretta of Jensen Beach, Fla.; thirteen grandchildren: Jonathan, Allison, Bailey, Chelsea, Michael, Jacob, Nicolas, Christian, Alexander, Peter, Brigham, Chloe and Samuel; and two great-grandchildren: Logan and Liam.

The family received friends Sunday, Sept. 2 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where the Rosary Altar Society and Father John Barrett conducted prayer services. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, Sept. 3 at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church by Father Peter Garry. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Memorial donations in Jo’s name may be made to Southold Fire Department Rescue Squad or to National Autism Association.

Charles E. Downs

Charles E. Downs of Riverhead died Sept. 2 in Stony Brook. He was 80.

He was born in Riverhead to Charles L. and Victoria (Fridae) Downs, Sept. 16, 1937, and graduated from Riverhead High School in 1956.

He married Laurie Collins and worked for the Riverhead Highway Department as a mechanic and welder, retiring after 32 years. Family members said he enjoyed hunting, fishing, clamming and messing around in the garage.

He is survived by his wife; sons Henry and Eugene; daughter Melanie; sisters Lillian Losee and Sylvia Downs; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Sept. 6, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Riverhead Cemetery.

Theodore M. Sysol

Theodore M. Sysol passed away at home in South Jamesport Sept. 4, 2018 at the age of 94.

Theodore was born in Dunkirk, N.Y., to Antonina and Ludwig Sysol April 28, 1924. He moved to Brooklyn when he was eight years old.

In 1943 he joined the Army and landed at Normandy June 10, 1944, day four of the invasion.

After the war, Theodore earned a Juris Doctor degree from St. John’s University. After a 35-year career, which involved both international and domestic law, he retired as a senior partner with the New York city law firm of Haight, Gardner, Poor and Havens, now Holland and Knight. Theodore was a founding member and past president of AMPOLA. 

A longtime resident of Garden City and South Jamesport, Theodore married Janina Choinski in 1948. She predeceased him in 2012. He is survived by his son Gregory and his wife Patricia, their son Paul, daughter Elizabeth and her daughter Ella and sons Gregory and Jonathan, daughter Cynthia, her husband Andrew and their daughters Katherine and Charlotte and his daughter Sandra and her husband Jerry, their daughters Mary Anne and Amy and her husband Chester.

The family will receive friends Friday, Sept. 7, from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery.

Susan Davies Hurst

Susan Davies Hurst, formerly of Floral Park, Coram and Tobyhanna, Pa., died Sept. 2.

Born July 31, 1947, Susan worked as a nurse for 49 years, and held true to her vow to “do no harm.” She was an avid traveler who saw the world by traveling to England, Ireland, Australia, France, Africa and Alaska. She was generous, caring and tenacious, and will be missed by all. She wanted to thank all those who traveled her final adventure with her.

She loved her family and is survived by her daughter, Veronica (Corey) Craw; her brother, Robert Davies; and her nephew, Justin Davies, his wife Jaslyn, and their three children.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Sept. 7, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. Burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, with a service at the fountain. Memories may be left on Susan’s memorial at tuthillfh.com.

Helen G. Tyska died Sept. 4 at her home in Calverton. She was 95.

Born in Baiting Hollow Feb. 16, 1923, to Henry and Tessie (Sujeski) Goozda, she graduated from Riverhead High School in 1941.

She was a homemaker, and family members said she loved gardening, cooking, puzzles and bingo.

Predeceased by her husband, Benny (2003) and her sister Eleanor Czerniawski; she is survived by her children, Carol Wowak, Dennis and Gregory; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, Sept. 12, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a memorial service will take place. Burial will follow at St. Isidore R.C. cemetery.

Leonard J. Powell Jr.

Leonard J. Powell Jr. of Riverhead died Sept. 4, at the age of 58.

Born Nov. 6, 1959 in Riverhead to Leonard and Elizabeth (Lyons) Powell, he attended Riverhead High School and worked as a pool technician for Pooltastic in Hampton Bays. Family members said he enjoyed golfing, fishing and outdoor photography.

Predeceased by his mother Elizabeth in 2006, and his domestic partner, Helen Jiskra; he is survived by his father Leonard; and his brothers, Gregory and Kenneth, all of Riverhead.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, Sept. 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. at McLaughlin Funeral Home in Riverhead. Cremation will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Joseph Peters

Joseph Peters of Riverhead and Naples, Fla., died at Acadia Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation in Riverhead  Sept. 6. He was 89 years old.

He was born Feb. 3, 1929, in Brooklyn to Charles and Louise Pietromartire, and later attended Bayside High School, St. John’s University and Hunter College, where he received his master’s degree.

From 1953-54, he served as a corporal in the United States Army, where he taught mathematics.

On July 8, 1978, he married Carol Attanasi, and together they made their home in Mattituck for many years.

Joe was a teacher in the Hampton Bays Union Free School District, a communicant and usher at Sacred Heart Parish and a past president of the Mattituck Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife Carol; two children, Lisa, of the Dominican Republic, and Jeffrey, of Hollis, N.H.; two grandchildren, Molly and Nathan; and nieces and nephews in Mattituck, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The family will receive visitors on Sunday, Sept. 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Sept. 10, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck. Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt will officiate.  Interment, with U.S. Army honors, will follow at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Marian Bitzer

Marian Bitzer of Riverhead, formerly of Greenport, died at the Acadia Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation Sept.10, 2018.  She was 91 years old.

The family will receive friends Friday, Oct. 5, from 4 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where religious services will be conducted at 6 p.m. by Rev. Dr. Peter J. Kelley.

Interment will take place on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 9:30 a.m. at Calverton National Cemetery. The funeral procession will be leaving the funeral home at 8:45 a.m.

The family would appreciate memorial donations made to Marian’s great-grandson, Dylan Newman, who is battling cancer. Donations can be sent to 485 Gardiners Lane, Southold, NY 11971.

Marie A. Smith of Baiting Hollow died at home Sept. 11, 2018. She was 85.

Born in Riverhead April 7, 1933, to John and Bertha (Lewin) Pflieger, she attended Riverhead High School.

She married James Smith Nov. 5, 1954.

Marie was a homemaker, and family members said she loved her Oak Hills neighborhood and her family.

She is survived by her son, James Smith Jr.

Funeral services and cremation will be private. Arrangements were in the care of McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Lloyd R. Scott of Calverton died Sept. 11 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 43.

He was born in Freehold, N.J. Sept. 26, 1974, to Richard and June (Border) Scott. He graduated from Riverhead High School in 1992 and was an airport manager at Gabreski Airport.

Predeceased by his father in 2007, he is survived by his fiancé, Trisha Yakaboski; his children, Colby, of Riverhead and Tanner, of Calverton; his mother June, of Riverhead; his sister Michelle Schwarz of Flanders; and his stepson, D.J. Chandler.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Sept. 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a memorial service will take place.

Memorial donations may be made to Riverhead Police Department K-9 Unit.

Richard “Dick” Miller

Richard “Dick” Miller died Sept. 16 at his home in Riverhead. He was 90 years old.

Born Feb. 1, 1928, in Belmore, Ohio, to Orvis and Marie (Dishon) Miller, Dick went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran and worked for Grumman Aerospace Corporation.

Predeceased by his wife, Joan (née Tuthill), in 2013 and his son Marlin, he is survived by his sons Richard and Glenn; his daughter, Denise; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Sept. 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead.

A funeral service will take place Saturday, Sept. 22, at 10 a.m. at Riverhead United Methodist Church, the Rev. Dr. Enrique Lebrón officiating. Interment will be at the Old Burying Ground at First Presbyterian Church of Southold.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Riverhead United Methodist Church.

Esther Cheslak Warner, a longtime resident of Baiting Hollow, passed away at age 94 Sept. 14 at the Acadia Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Riverhead.

She was born June 26, 1924, in Brooklyn to Edward and Anna Andos.

She was a member and past treasurer of Baiting Hollow Congregational Church and past president of the Riverhead Garden Club.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Edward Cheslak; and her sisters, Lillie Bruderer and Alice Strohm.

She is survived by her husband, DeWitt Warner; children Edward (Carol) Cheslak and Cynthia (Thomas) Keenan, all of Baiting Hollow; and her brother Roy Olsen.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, Sept. 22, at 11 a.m. at Baiting Hollow Congregational Church.

Arrangements were entrusted to McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Stanley A. Berman

Stanley A. Berman of Riverhead died Sept. 17 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. He was 93.

He was born in the Bronx Aug. 17, 1925, to Irving and Harriet Berman. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He was a lead mechanic for Eastern Airlines.

Family members said he loved planes, hiking, photography, the beach and travel.

Predeceased by his wife, Elaine, in 2012, he is survived by his children, Susan Loper of Riverhead and Bruce, of Florida; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be sitting shiva Friday, Sept. 21, and Saturday, Sept. 22, from 1 to 7 p.m. at 1661 Old Country Road, Unit 385, in Riverhead.

Burial will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at Calverton National Cemetery.

Arrangements were in the care of McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Mary Elizabeth Brown Kunnmann

Mary Elizabeth Brown Kunnmann of Baiting Hollow died on Sept. 15 after a two-year battle with ALS.

She is survived by her companion Arthur Atkins of Riverhead; her five sons, Richard, George, Wade, Daniel and Kurt; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. 

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, Sept. 19, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Marinello Funeral Home, in Coram. There will be a celebration of life Thursday, Sept. 20, at 10 a.m., also at the funeral home.

Phoebe Ann Cushman

Phoebe Ann Cushman (née Young) of Pittsboro, N.C., died Sept. 14, 2018, at UNC Medical Center surrounded by her children, at the age of 85.

Phoebe is survived by her children, Sharon Koch of Apex, N.C., John (Eileen) Cushman II of Mattituck and David (Hope) Cushman of Greensboro, N.C.; her brother, Robert Young of Hendersonville, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Phoebe was preceded in death by her husband, John “Jack” Cushman of Cutchogue; her daughter Karen, of Madison, N.J.; her sister, Priscilla Lyndes of Barre, Vt.; and her brothers, William E. Young of Southold and John Donald Young of Greenport.

Phoebe was born Feb. 1, 1933, to Marguerite and W. Emmett Young of Southold, where she grew up before attending Fredonia State Teachers College, graduating with a degree in elementary education. She and Jack were married in 1956 and raised their family in Riverhead before moving to Cutchogue in 1980. Phoebe taught second grade in the Riverhead Central School District for many years while earning her master’s degree at Southampton College, and was an active member of Riverhead Methodist Church and Mattituck Presbyterian Church.

Phoebe subsequently moved to North Carolina, where she made her home at Galloway Ridge in Pittsboro. Phoebe will be remembered for her kindness, compassion, strong will and independence, as well as for being a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. 

A celebration of Phoebe’s life was held Sept. 19 in the library at Galloway Ridge in Pittsboro. The family will receive visitors at Mattituck Presbyterian Church Monday, Oct. 1, at 10 a.m., followed immediately by a celebration of life with interment at Cutchogue Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in memory of Phoebe to either Ducks Unlimited Inc., One Waterfowl Way, Memphis, TN 38120; the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Supporter Services, 901 E Street NW, Suite 100, Washington, DC 20004-2025; Mattituck Presbyterian Church, 12605 Main Road, Mattituck, NY 11952; or the Medical Foundation Cardiac Critical Care Fund, P. O. Box 1050, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

James Lawrence Turner III

James Lawrence Turner III died on May 6, 2018, at the age of 95. Along with his wife of 65 years, Winifred Mary Turner, who died Oct. 13, 2012, he was a longtime resident of Riverhead and Mattituck. 

Mr. Turner, a veteran of World War ll, worked as an electrical engineer at Bell Telephone company for more than 30 years before retiring in 1985.

The Turners raised seven children and were active members of St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church and school in Riverhead. Their extended family gathered on Long Island in September to celebrate the lives of James and Winifred, and for their burial at St. John’s cemetery.

James C. McBurnie of Florida, formerly of Riverhead, died Sept. 21. He was 70 years old.

He was a local auctioneer for many years.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Services will be at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will be at St. John the Evangelist Cemetery in Riverhead.
