Helen Victoria-Horton

Helen Victoria-Horton of Mattituck died Jan. 22, 2014, at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She was 86.

She was born Nov. 21, 1927, in New Suffolk to Edward and Mary (Kreskowski) Victoria. Growing up in New Suffolk, Helen loved the Great Peconic Bay. She spent her youth clamming, fishing, scalloping and frolicking on the beach with her brothers, sisters and neighborhood friends.

After her marriage to Byron Horton, she worked the family farm until retirement. More than anything, Helen loved her family. She always had a smile on her face and could crack a joke at a moment’s notice.

Helen was predeceased by her siblings, Stanley, John, Paul, Peter, Chester, Mary Sophie and Stella. She is survived by her beloved daughters, Mary (Doug) Bogovich Sr. and Janet Stewart; her grandchildren, Doug (Dawn) Bogovich, John (Jessica) Stewart, Kathleen (Michael) DiSilvio and Ryan Bogovich; her great-grandchildren, Amber and Alex Bogovich and Raylan and Isla DiSilvio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, Jan. 26, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, Jan. 27, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church, Father Stan Wadowski officiating. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Memorial donations to the Mattituck Fire Department Rescue Squad or the American Heart Association would be appreciated.

Jane T. Taggart

Jane T. Taggart of Southold, 90, passed away Jan. 21, 2014.

Born Oct. 26, 1923, to Samuel and Jane Hundt, she was raised in Jamaica Estates, where she attended The Mary Louis Academy. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Claire Conlon.

Jane held a position at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company before marrying William S. Taggart, with whom she had four children, William Jr., Carol, John and Eileen.

A resident of Wantagh before retiring to Southold, Jane enjoyed spending time with her family and gardening and was an avid bowler for many years, serving as an officer of the ladies leagues. She enjoyed traveling; her last big trip, at age 75, was to Hawaii with her daughters and their families. With her cane, she hiked all around the volcano lava. She was also an avid and skilled card player; bridge and gin rummy were her favorites.

She is survived by her brother, William, and her children: Bill; Carol; John and his wife, Tricia, and their children, Richard, Peter and Matthew; and Eileen and her husband, Steve, and their son, Stephen.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Jan. 26, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. A funeral Mass will be held Monday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold.

Edward C. Goodfield

Former Riverhead resident Edward C. Goodfield of Palm Bay, Fla., died Jan. 16. He was 90.

Born July 2, 1923, in Brooklyn to Edward and Elsie (Schmid) Goodfield, he served in the U.S. Army as a private first class during World War II, from 1943 to 1945. He later founded and operated Edwards Sporting Center in Riverhead.

Mr. Goodfield was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (née Nauss), in 2001 and is survived by his daughter, Diane McGee of Hampton Bays; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family received visitors Jan. 26 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a funeral service took place Jan. 27. Pastor John Kenreich of Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church in Hampton Bays officiated. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery.

Carolyn S. Auerbach

Former longtime Riverhead resident Carolyn S. Auerbach of East Patchogue died Jan. 24. She was 69.

She was born Jan. 3, 1945, in Brooklyn to Tom and Ruth (Robbins) Hirsch. Most recently, she was employed as a sales associate at Walmart in Riverhead.

Ms. Auerbach is survived by her daughters, Dorri and Penny, both of East Patchogue, and three grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A graveside service took place Jan. 29 at New Montefiore Cemetery in Farmingdale.

Beverly B. McKavish-Flynn

Beverly B. McKavish-Flynn died Jan. 22 at her Riverhead home. She was 75.

She was born July 8, 1938, in Southampton to Myron and Evelyn (Donaldson) Bennett. Family members said she was a mom and homemaker who loved caring for her family and friends.

She was predeceased by her first husband, John McKavish, in 1997. Her second husband, David Flynn, and her daughters Carol Porter and Winnie Kess, all predeceased her in 2013.

Ms. McKavish-Flynn is survived by her sons, John and Billy McKavish of Riverhead; her stepson, David Flynn Jr. of Georgia; her daughters Evelyn Conklin of Mattituck and Catherine Porter of Riverhead; her stepdaughters, Karen Ratcliff and Theresa Flynn, both of Flanders; her brothers, Eugene Bennett of Riverhead and John Bennett of Southampton; her sisters, Joan Kelly of Florida, Evelyn King of Riverhead, Barbara Kincaid of Nevada and Mary Ellen Rinkens of Hampton Bays; 19 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family received visitors Jan. 24 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service took place Jan. 25 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment was at the church cemetery.

Edith Sinnott Cullen Fenn

Edith Sinnott Cullen Fenn of Mattituck passed away Jan. 22, 2014, at the age of 90.

She was born Oct. 16, 1923, in Brooklyn to Francis J. and Marguerite (Babcock) Sinnott.
Edith graduated from The Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica in 1941 and received her secretarial degree from Stratford Junior College in Danville, Va., in 1943. She married Paul T. Cullen June 15, 1946, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. They lived in Garden City and East Williston, where they raised their six children, until Paul’s death in 1974.

Edith’s highest priority in life was being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her faith in God inspired everyone around her and guided her through life’s difficult times. Edith also worked part time as a secretary at St. Aidan School in Williston Park and St. Agnes High School in Rockville Centre and later was a full-time secretary in the social services department at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn.

She married Theodore C. Fenn in 1977. They lived in Manhasset for nine years, until Ted’s death in 1986.

Edith retired to Mattituck in 1987. There she loved to share with her family her happy memories of childhood summers, grow her beautiful flower garden and participate in local Audubon Society activities. Edith was an active parishioner at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, serving as an outreach volunteer and as a Eucharistic minister to the homebound.

Predeceased by her sister, Gloria F. Sinnott, and her brother Francis J. Sinnott Jr., Edith is survived by her brother the Rev. James P. Sinnott, MM, a Maryknoll missioner serving in Seoul, South Korea; six children, Christine (Paul) Wissert of East Meadow, Paul (Margaret) Cullen of Glen Head, Marguerite (Edmund) Giordano of Cutchogue, Peter (Lyuba) Cullen of Livingston, N.J., Irene (Robert) Hungerford of Chilmark, Mass., and Edith (Cameron) McAlpine of North East, Md.; 10 grandchildren, Gregory, Brian, Jeffrey, Elizabeth, Katherine, Daniel, Douglas, Joshua, Sarah and Stephanie; and four great-grandchildren, Megan, Jake, Abby and Caleb.

The family received visitors Jan. 24 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 25 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church. Interment took place at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Emma F. Tschiember

Emma F. Tschiember of Southold died Jan. 20, 2014, at San Simeon by the Sound nursing home in Greenport. She was 91.

She was born in Queens Sept. 29, 1922, to Leopold and Emma (Maulin) Kusold.

A Southold resident for many years, Emma had been a supervisor in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office for over 30 years.

Emma enjoyed the state of Maine, where she bought and sold real estate. She will also be remembered for her fondness of animals, especially cats.

Predeceased by her husband, Martin, in 1988, she leaves her son, Alan M. Tschiember, and daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Tschiember, of Southold.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 24 at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold. Interment took place at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.

William H.G. Barnett

William H.G. Barnett of Southold died at his home Jan. 24, 2014. He was 75.

He was born in Port Jefferson July 25, 1938, to Louis and Elizabeth Barnett. A graduate of The Stony Brook School, he attended Adelphi University and graduated from Penn State.

A resident of Southold for the past 20 years, he previously lived in East Hampton for 40 years and was a high school math teacher with the East Hampton School District for 30 years.

He was a member of First Presbyterian churches in East Hampton and Southold and served as a church elder.

Surviving are his wife, Audrey (née Newton), whom he married Jan. 1, 1960, in Stony Brook; four children, Timothy Barnett of Atlanta, Ga., Toby Marienfeld of Sag Harbor, Shannon DiGate of East Hampton and Megan Anderson of Trumbull, Conn.; his siblings, Robert and Joanne Barnett; and grandchildren Emilie Barnett, William Barnett, Wyatt Barnett, Mariah Marienfeld, Jackson Marienfeld, Cooper Marienfeld, Hannah DiGate, Cameron DiGate, Cole Smith, Ellie Smith and Grant Smith.

Memorial services were held Jan. 27 at First Presbyterian Church of East Hampton, the Rev. Dr. Peter Kelley officiating.

Memorial donations to East End Hospice, Southampton Ambulance or First Presbyterian Church of Southold would be appreciated.

Lois Reeve

Longtime Riverhead resident Lois Reeve passed away Jan. 26, 2014, surrounded by her children. She was 85.

Lois was born Oct. 25, 1928, in Amityville, the daughter of Ruby and Winfield Weber. She graduated from Hofstra University and moved to Riverhead to take a job. On her first day of work she was invited home by co-worker Ruby Reeve, her future sister-in-law, and met Ruby’s brother Fred, who later became her devoted and loving husband of 57 years.

Lois was a longtime active member of Old Steeple Community Church in Aquebogue. She was also active in East End Arts, Riverhead Free Library and SCORE. She loved entertaining and had many dear friends in Riverhead and across the United States. Lois loved her large family and always welcomed extra friends to join in the family fun. She also loved to travel the world with her husband. They had amazing adventures including scuba diving, hang gliding, hot-air ballooning and touring the Great Wall of China.

Lois was predeceased by her husband, Fred, her daughter Laurie Zaweski and her brother, Walter Weber. She is survived by her loving children Frederick Reeve Jr. and his wife, Shirley; Cyndi Reynolds and her husband, Phil; Nancy Yannopoulos and her husband, Aris; Scott Reeve and his wife, Linda; Marsha Wickens and her husband, Rich; Chris Reeve and his wife, Mary; and her son-in-law Mark Zaweski. Lois is also survived by 18 grandchildren: Danielle and her husband, Pelle Kirkeby; Kimberli and Eric Reeve; Jennifer and Andrew Reynolds; Demetri, Paul, Tommy, Nick and Kathy Yannopoulos; Kate, Audrey and Jackie Zaweski; Michael Reeve; Lauren and Holly Wickens; and Jonathan and Hannah Reeve. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews from the Reeve, Priapi and Weber families.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place Thursday, January 30, at 11 a.m. at Old Steeple Community Church, immediately followed by interment at the church cemetery.

Dennis J. Swenkowski of Southold died suddenly Jan. 16, 2014, while aboard the cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway. He was 66.

He was born Aug. 19, 1947, in Brooklyn to Peter and Helen (Remsen) Swenkowski.

Dennis had been a sheet metal worker with Local 28.

Predeceased by his parents, he is survived by his cousins.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 23 at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue by Father Peter. Interment took place at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery, also in Cutchogue.

Karen A. Flynn-Ratcliff died Jan. 30 at her home in Flanders. She was 52. 

She was born Sept. 6, 1961, in Southampton to David and Maureen (Malone) Flynn and worked as a dispatcher for ACME Baumann and Sons bus company.

Predeceased by her mother in 1993 and her father in 2013, Ms. Flynn-Ratcliff is survived by her husband, Harold Ratcliff, and her son, Vaughn Michaud, both of Flanders; her brother, David Flynn of Georgia, and her sister, Theresa Flynn of Flanders.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, Feb. 4, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a service will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 10 a.m., by the Rev. Robert Kuznik of St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will be at Calverton National Cemetery.

Joel Ayala Torres

Former Riverhead resident Joel Ayala Torres of Mastic died Jan. 30 at Stony Brook University Hospital. He was 42. 

He was born April 6, 1971, in Puerto Rico to Epifanio and Carmen Ayala. He worked as an auto detailer in Riverhead, and family members said he enjoyed football and baseball.

Mr. Torres is survived by his parents and his brothers, Javier, of Poughkeepsie, and Josue, of Puerto Rico.

The family received visitors Feb. 2 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Cremation was private.

Kempermann memorial set

A memorial service for former Calverton resident Ernie Kempermann will be held Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Sylvester R.C. Church in Medford. Father Tom Colby will officiate.

Mr. Kempermann, who resided in Maricopa, Ariz., died Jan. 5, 2014, at Chandler (Ariz.) Regional Medical Center. He was 76.

Leslie H. Corwin Jr.

Leslie H. Corwin Jr. of Mattituck died Jan. 23, 2014. He was 86.

He was born in Aquebogue Feb. 5, 1927, to Marie and Leslie Corwin Sr. and was a graduate of Riverhead High School. On Feb. 26, 1993, he married Karen V. Kelley in Mattituck.

Les was a farmer and general manager of Long Island Cauliflower Association for more than 20 years. He was chief executive officer of the association until his retirement in 1993.

He joined Jamesport Fire Department in 1964 and was a fire commissioner for five years. An avid hunter and member of the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club, he also belonged to Old Steeple Community Church in Aquebogue.

Les was predeceased by his sister Doris. Surviving are his wife, Karen; his children, Phil, Florence and Debbie, all of Florida, Tim, of Riverhead, and Leslie III, of Bridgehampton; his sister Jane of Florida; six grandchildren, including Adam, the eldest, to whom Les was very close; two step-grandchildren; and a favorite nephew, Gary, of North Carolina, and niece, Susan, of Florida.

The family received visitors Jan. 25 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where members of the Jamesport Fire Department paid respects to their comrade. Interment took place Jan. 27 at Aquebogue Cemetery.

Carolyn M. Dewar of Southold died at her home Jan. 29, 2014, with her family by her side. She was 72.

She was born July 2, 1941, in Flint, Mich., to Michael and May (Hansman) Zukas. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Southold.

On April 1, 1982, Carol married John P. Dewar in Southold. She had been a bookkeeper at San Simeon by the Sound Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation and, after retiring from that position, became a cashier at King Kullen in Cutchogue.

Carol enjoyed crocheting, cross-stitching, reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, collecting Precious Moments figurines, eating out and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, John P. Dewar; her children, Michael (Lynn) Eckhardt and Michelle Eckhardt, both of Southold, and Melissa (Tim) McGowan of Mattituck; a brother, Gary Zukas of Southold; six grandchildren, Shannon Chute, Jeremy Eckhardt, Kaela and Collin McGowan and Nicholas and Justin Eckhardt; and a great-granddaughter, Ariana Chute.

The family received visitors Jan. 30 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 31 by Father Peter Garry at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery.

John H. DeJesus

John H. DeJesus departed this life Jan. 28, 2014, at his home in Cutchogue. He was 90.

He was born Feb. 8, 1923, in Greenport to Florentino and Frances DeJesus. As a young boy, he attended Cutchogue Grammar School and Southold Junior-Senior High School, where he was noted for his outstanding participation in many sports, including baseball, basketball and track. He went on to graduate from Greenport High School in 1942.

On Sept. 12, 1944, John entered the U.S. Navy, where he served our beautiful country as an aviation machinist mate third class. Following his honorable discharge on April 7, 1946, he then moved to — where else? — the Bronx, New York, where he became an officer for the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority. He served there for 33 years and retired in November 1985.

After retiring, he came back home to Long Island to his longtime love, Beatrice Pace. He married his “Honey Bea” August 24, 1985. They traveled to many places around the world and he would have given her the world if it only had a price.

John’s legacy will live on in the hearts of his wife, Beatrice; his sister, Miriam Gloria Harris of Hempstead; his three beautiful nieces, Karen Butterfield of California and Lorraine DeJesus and Carol Grant, both of Jamaica, Queens; his brothers-in-law, Alvin Pace, Roy Pace, Terry Pace and Gary Pace; his sisters-in-law, Joan Davis and Lorraine Mason; and numerous relatives and friends.

“John was always available to anyone who needed him and will be sorely missed by all of us,” family members said.

Homegoing services were held Feb. 1 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, the Rev. Marvin Dozier officiating. Interment with U.S. Navy honors took place at Cutchogue Cemetery.

Norman Leslie Corwin Jr.

Former Riverhead resident Norman Leslie Corwin Jr. passed away peacefully Jan. 26, 2014, at Suncoast Hospice Care Center in Pinellas Park, Fla. He was 80.

Born June 3, 1933, in Riverhead to Charlotte and Norman Corwin, he graduated from Riverhead High School in 1951 and enlisted in the U.S. Army. During his term of service, he worked in the cryptology department at the Pentagon.

After his discharge, Norman lived in Jamaica, Queens, where he began a 33-year career with American Airlines. He lived in both Tulsa, Okla., and Azle, Texas, commuting from each back and forth to the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport until his retirement.

Norman enjoyed classical music, reading, gardening, the culinary arts and family events. His declining health led his family to assist him in relocating to Clearwater, Fla., and The Villas of Belleair, now known as Pacifica Belleair Memory Care. The very caring and dedicated staff there became Norman’s extended family.

He is survived by his brother, Richard (Dick) Corwin, and sister-in-law, Lois Corwin of Riverhead; nieces, Jill Lynch (Christopher) and Donna Corwin, of Florida; and nephews, Adam Corwin (Lorrie) of Florida and Rick Corwin (Jody) of Woodstock, Ga. Also included in his loving family are three great-nieces, Kaitlyn Corwin, Emily Corwin, and Riley Lynch, and three great-nephews, Aidan Lynch, Colin Corwin and Charlie Corwin. Norman was predeceased by his sister, Anne R. Corwin.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m. at Unity Church of Clearwater in Florida. Burial will take place at a future date at Riverhead Cemetery.

Services planned for Harold Schaefer, Riverhead’s longest serving fireman

Riverhead Fire Department’s longest serving member Harold “Smokey” Schaefer died Friday at Peconic Bay Medical Center. He was 94 years old.

Mr. Schaefer signed up as a Riverhead volunteer firefighter in 1941. He later became the captain of the Ever Ready Engine Company.  In all, he served more than 73 years with RFD.

“He was an outstanding gentleman,” said Dennis Hamill, former chairman of the Riverhead Fire District’s Board of Commissioners. “I knew him my entire career at the fire department and he was always ready to help. He’s just a world class guy.”

A Riverhead native, Mr. Schaefer was born on April 4, 1919. He graduated Riverhead High School before working as a service technician at Firestone in Riverhead and enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he served from 1942 to 1946.

He was a World War II veteran and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. Van Rensselaer-Skidmore Post 2476 in Riverhead.

In June 2012, Mr. Schaefer received a proclamation from Assemblyman Dan Losquadro’s office for 70 years of dedicated service.

He is survived by his son Kevin of South Carolina, his daughters Marie Madigan and Kathleen Schaefer, both of Riverhead, eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home, 336 Marcy Avenue, Riverhead.

A service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Military honors will follow directly after Wednesday’s service at Calverton National Cemetery.

Catherine Chessa O’Brien

Catherine Chessa O’Brien of Southold died suddenly Feb. 4, 2014, at the Hospital for Special Surgery. She was 81.

She was born Feb. 7, 1932, in Greenwich, Conn., to Vittorio and Maria Chessa and became the wife of Thomas M. O’Brien July 3, 1954, in Waterbury, Conn.

Mrs. O’Brien received her Bachelor of Science from Central Connecticut State University in 1953, her Master of Arts from Long Island University in 1970 and an advanced diploma in Montessori from Universita Bergamo in Italy in 1981. She had been a teacher with Eastern Suffolk BOCES for 33 years.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas M. O’Brien; five children, David, of Fort Myers, Fla., Thomas, of Hattiesburg, Miss., Christopher, of East Moriches, Douglas, of Hoboken, N.J., and Gregory of Rocky River, Ohio; 13 grandchildren, David and Danielle, Cyrus and Joe, Jessika, Kevin and Liam, Natalie, Colin and Aimee and Finnigon, Gavin and Mollie; and one great-grandchild, Taylor O’Brien. She was predeceased by a daughter, Catherine, July 15, 1955, and a sister, Maria Chagenon, in 1998.

The family received visitors Feb. 7 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Feb. 8 at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold by Father Thomas Murray, with assistance by Deacon Michael Stankiewicz. Interment took place Feb. 10 at Calverton National Cemetery.

Harold ‘Smokey’ Schaefer

Lifelong Riverhead resident Harold Schaefer, known as Smokey, died Feb. 7 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. He was 94.

He was born in Riverhead April 4, 1919, to Anthony and Martha Schaefer and graduated from Riverhead High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 and had been employed as a serviceman at Firestone in Riverhead.

Mr. Schaefer was very involved in the Riverhead Fire Department, serving for over 70 years and earning the distinction of being its oldest living member. He was also involved in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Van Rensselaer-Skidmore Post 2476 in Riverhead. Relatives said he enjoyed fishing and spending time with family.

Predeceased by his wife, Geraldine, in 2000, Mr. Schaefer is survived by his son, Kevin, of South Carolina; his daughters, Marie Madigan and Kathleen, both of Riverhead; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 6 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a funeral service will take place Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 10 a.m. Interment with military honors will be at Calverton National Cemetery.
