Nancy Gassert

Nancy Gassert, born July 8, 1945, died Aug. 15, 2019, at Kanas Center for Hospice Care in Quiogue.Nancy was a longtime resident of Riverhead and a pillar of the community.

Nancy was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, the daughter of Edward and Mildred O’Rourke. She was a sister to three brothers, Billy, Bobby and Happy.

Nancy grew up in Baldwin, N.Y., and later graduated from Baldwin High School in 1963.

Nancy and her family moved to Hampton Bays, where she worked for the health and beauty department of Hills Supermarket. Nancy went on to become the first female supervisor for the Hills franchise.

Nancy, among many other accolades, was a tremendous bowler. She played in bowling leagues and became a member of the 200 club.

It was at Wildwood Lanes where Nancy met her future husband, Howard Gassert. Howard bartended at the bowling alley and the two of them connected after Nancy was consoled by Howard at the bar. Howard and Nancy went on to get married June 23, 1974, in Westhampton at a family home. Nancy carried a bouquet of daisies, wearing a dress that she had made herself. It poured that day but the rain didn’t inconvenience any of the attendees. Nancy and Howie just celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary.

Nancy and Howie lived in their home in Riverhead for most of those 45 years. In June of 1977, Nancy gave birth to her first child, a daughter named Karen after her late niece. Then two years later Nancy gave birth to her second child, a son named Howard.

Nancy, being a devoted mother, stayed at home with her children. She made homemade Halloween costumes and tended to her expansive garden in the backyard. Once her children entered school she began to participate in the school’s parent teacher organization. This is when Nancy began to realize her calling.

Nancy eventually opened her own home and business cleaning service called Cottages to Castles. But she never lost the passion she felt for making not only her children’s school-age years memorable and productive, but all children’s.

She went on to become a member of the PTO counsel and soon after ran for the Riverhead Central School District school board. She spent many years as a member and was eventually elected to be school board president. This was a position that few can uphold due to the thankless time and energy that is put into it, but Nancy put her heart and soul into that position. She loved it.

Nancy was also a huge fan of Riverhead athletics. Nancy never missed a game, whether it was football, basketball or a cheerleading competition. Nancy was a Blue Wave through and through.

Nancy was so fond of the children who her own children went to school with that she would open her home every weekend to them, providing a safe place to hang out and socialize. Friday nights became known as homemade pizza and lemonade night. There might have been upwards of 15 to 20 kids hanging out and playing basketball on any given weekend. Homecoming was an extra-special time because each year the Class of 1995 would descend on the Gassert’s garage and begin construction of the homecoming float.

Nancy had kept in touch with many of the kids from that group who spent so much time at her house. Many consider Nancy to be a “second mom” to them. Those kids are all grown up now, some with kids of their own, including her own children.

Howard is currently working at Westhampton Country Club and will be pursuing a job with a large company in September. Karen is a kindergarten teacher at Aquebogue Elementary School in the Riverhead Central School District. She lives in Baiting Hollow with her two daughters, Evelyn and Adelaide.

Nancy’s greatest joy in her life has definitely been becoming a grandmother. There was never a grandmother who loved her grandchildren more than Nancy did. Nancy took care of her grandchildren when her daughter went back to work after her maternity leave. Nancy never passed up an opportunity to see her grandchildren. She went to every event that they participated in. Her grandchildren will most likely miss her the most.

Nancy had suffered many health challenges over the years. Her longtime battle with Lyme disease had caused extensive damage to her body physically and neurologically. On Monday, Aug. 5, 2019, Nancy suffered a hemorrhagic stroke, which left her incapacitated. She spent four days at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore and was eventually transferred to the Kanas Center for Hospice Care on Aug. 9. She passed peacefully in the early morning of Aug. 15.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Howard Gassert; her son, Howard; her daughter, Karen; and her two loving granddaughters, Evelyn, age 10, and Adelaide, age 5.

The family received family and friends Aug. 19 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A memorial service was held the following day at Baiting Hollow Congregational Church, where she had attended church every Sunday. She was laid to rest following the service at the church cemetery.

This is a paid notice.

Community mourns loss of former school board president with ‘heart of gold’

Longtime Riverhead school board member Nancy Gassert died last Thursday at the Kanas Center for Hospice Care in Quiogue. She was 74.

Ms. Gassert, who moved to Riverhead with her husband, Howard, shortly after they married in 1974, established a close relationship with the school community when she joined the Riverhead Parent-Teacher Organization. At the time, her two children, Howard and Karen, were enrolled in the district.

She was active in the PTO for over 20 years and formed the PTO Council in 1991.

She was elected to the Riverhead Board of Education in 1996 and served through 2008. She served as board president from 2006 to 2008.

Riverhead Town Justice Lori Hulse served on the board with Ms. Gassert for about six years. She said Ms. Gassert, whom she knew for over 20 years, was always prepared for meetings and was eager to hear comments from the public.

“She always gave 100 percent, she was well respected,” she said. “As a friend, I found her to be a loyal and generous person.”

School board member Laurie Downs recalled that when they first met, they would bump heads at times during board meetings. But Ms. Gassert “was always there to give advice,” said Ms. Downs, a former PTO president.

The two found common ground and became friends, bonding over their love for the children, she said.

“She did have a heart of gold,” Ms. Downs said. “She would do anything for any child.”

Ms. Gassert owned and operated a home and business cleaning service called Cottages to Castles in Riverhead and volunteered outside the school community: She served on Riverhead’s Recreation Advisory and Conservation Advisory committees.

The Baldwin native was a big supporter of the Blue Waves, attending most high school football, basketball and cheerleading competitions, according to an obituary from the family.

“She loved the Blue Waves, she was all about the blue and white,” Ms. Hulse said. “The loss to Riverhead athletics, and Riverhead in general, is huge.”

Football coach Leif Shay said Ms. Gassert was instrumental in his taking over the program in 1998. After he was hired, he said, she advocated for sports programs despite community frustrations and a shrinking budget.

“Everyone was trying to cut sports. Money-wise, sports were the first thing on the chopping block,” Mr. Shay said. “She just wouldn’t allow it. She said it was such a component, such an important part of the kids’ lives. She was a fighter for it.”

Ms. Gassert had a hemorrhagic stroke Monday, Aug. 5, leaving her incapacitated, according to her obituary. She had struggled since 1983 with Lyme disease, which caused her physical and neurological damage.

She was featured in a 2017 News-Review story profiling residents with Lyme disease.

Ms. Gassert is survived by her husband of 45 years, her son and daughter, and two granddaughters, Evelyn, 10, and Adelaide, 5. Services for Ms. Gassert were held Monday, Aug. 19, at McLaughlin-Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead and Tuesday, Aug. 20, at Baiting Hollow Congregational Church, where she attended services.

Maureen Anne McCarthy of Southold, N.Y., and San Francisco, Calif., passed away in Mexico Aug. 26, 2019.

She was born to Mona Rose and Robert Joseph McCarthy July 16, 1949.

Maureen was raised in Elmhurst, Queens until she was 11, when she and her family moved to Southold.

Predeceased by her partner, Malachi Burris, Maureen was loved dearly by her siblings and their spouses: Dan (Penelope), Sheila (Lew), Joe (Evie), Mona (Paul), Bob (Trish), Pat (Penelope) and Tom (Susan).

She adored all of her nieces and nephews and the rest of her large Irish family and was proud to be godmother to Megan McCarthy Beauvais.

Maureen graduated from Southold High School in 1967 and went on to graduate from the Lenox Hill Hospital School of Nursing. She also received a bachelor of arts from the University of St. Francis and a master’s degree in human sexuality studies from San Francisco State University. She had a varied and extensive work history. In 1971, Maureen joined the Suffolk County Department of Health Services in Riverhead and subsequently worked in the migrant health program when the Long Island vineyards were still potato fields. She toured the world as a cruise ship nurse and worked as a nurse at San Quentin State Prison on death row.

After retiring from San Francisco County Jail Health Services program, she returned to Southold in 2008 to care for her ailing mother until her mother’s passing in 2012. During that time, she volunteered her time with New York State Blood Services, Horton Point Lighthouse in Southold and a thrift store in Greenport. In the following years, she returned to San Francisco, which she used as a port of call for her travels to many places, including the Grand Canyon, tours of Iceland and India and a surprise trip to Las Vegas for her sister Mona’s birthday.

Maureen loved to write and to learn. She often educated herself with classes and pampered her family with frequent letters and notes (which often contained concealed sparkles or confetti, Maureen’s signature move). Despite the teasing she received from close friends about her “goodwill” finds, she loved to volunteer at many thrift shops and found joy in hunting for bargains and Angels to add to her collection.

Above all else, Maureen was a kind, compassionate person with a sweet and sensitive soul. She touched the hearts of everyone who was lucky enough to cross her path. Maureen will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

A wake was held at Defriest-Grattan funeral home in Mattituck Sept. 2. A service for Maureen was held at the same location Sept. 3.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maureen’s name to the Humane Society, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the First Universalist Church, P.O. Box 221, Southold, NY 11971 or a charity of your choice.
