Arnold H. Sims

Arnold H. Sims of Riverhead died at home Nov. 13, 2019. He was 96.

He was born May 2, 1923, to Louise Rose and John Sims in Lynn, Mass.

Mr. Sims graduated from high school and was employed as a service manager in the automotive industry for Wells Pontiac Cadillac and Peter Glenan Buick Cadillac in Southampton.

He was predeceased his wife, Ann, and his daughter Jean LePage. He is survived by his children Daniel (Dorothy), Ronald (Pamela), Dorre (Harry) Miles, Linda (Robert) Taplin and Jo-Ann (Thomas) Perry; his significant other, Jean Guydish; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitors will be received Sunday, Nov. 17, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Tuthill- Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. Mass will be the following day at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church at 9:30 a.m., followed by burial at St. John’s Cemetery.

Ernest ‘Toppy’ Jones

Ernest “Toppy” Jones of Mattituck died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019. He was 92 years old.

Toppy was born Feb. 26, 1927, in Greenport, N.Y., to Clara (Krause) and Harold Jones.

He attended Peconic School. After school he joined the U.S. Army during World War II from May of 1945 to November of 1946, where he attained the rank of sergeant.

On Oct. 9, 1948, he married the love of his life, Elsie Miska, at Sacred Heart R.C. Church in Cutchogue. Together they made their home in Mattituck and had two children.

He was a member of the American Legion. As a profession, he was a self-employed builder and built many homes for the local community.

Toppy was predeceased by his beloved wife, Elsie Jones, on April 23, 2014, and predeceased by siblings Harold, Bud, Robert, Marion, Hope and Pearl. Toppy is survived by his children, James Jones of Westhampton and Cynthia Kronenberg of Riverhead; grandchildren, Douglas Kronenberg Jr., Jacqueline Kronenberg and Nicole Jones; great-grandson, Nathan Kronenberg; and sister Ellie Hawkins of Florida.

Visitors were received Thursday, Nov. 14, at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where U.S. Army honors were rendered during the afternoon visitation. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday morning, Nov. 15, at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, officiated by Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt. Interment followed at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Mattituck Fire Department Rescue Squad or East End Hospice would be appreciated.

Kathleen M. Donlin

Kathleen M. Donlin, longtime Southold resident, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019. She was 90 years old.

Kathleen was born April 20, 1929, in New York City to Susan (Pelerine) and John O’Donnell.

She graduated from St. Vincent Ferrer High School in New York City.

Kathleen was a long-term manager of the Land Shark in Greenport. She was a member of St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport.

She loved her family and being a stay-at-home mom.

Kathleen was predeceased by her husband, Edwin John Donlin, on Dec. 4, 1997, and predeceased by her brother, Jack O’Donnell. She is survived by her children, Susan Donlin Flatley (Martin) of Southold, Dennis Donlin (Elisabeth) of Cutchogue and Richard Donlin of Calverton; eight grandchildren, Jena, Megan, Chelsea, Rory, Ryan, Ian, Hannah and Cooper; and two great-grandchildren, Maeve and McKenna Flatley.

Visitors will be received Friday, Nov. 22, from 3 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Nov. 23, at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport, officiated by Father Richard Hoerning. The Rite of Committal will be private.

Cynthia ‘Aunt Sassy’ B. Yarborough

Cynthia “Aunt Sassy” B. Yarborough of Riverhead died at her home Nov. 12, 2019. She was 72.

She was born April 1, 1947, to Dorothy (Williams) and Samuel Yarborough.

Ms. Yarborough graduated from Center Moriches High School in 1965 and later from Stony Brook University.

She made a career as a social worker at San Francisco Pacific Medical Center.

Her family said she was an artist who enjoyed gardening and traveling and that she loved nature and the water.

Ms. Yarborough is survived by her sister, Peggie J. Brown of Riverhead; her best friend and cousin, Joyce Richardson; her good friend and neighbor, Anthony; and nieces and nephews.

McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead assisted the family with a private cremation. A service will be announced at a later date.

Irene Aleksandrowicz

Irene Aleksandrowicz of Riverhead died Nov. 16. She was 91. 

She was born in Germany on Jan. 6, 1928.

Ms. Aleksandrowicz worked as a seamstress at Rivertogs in Riverhead. Her family said she enjoyed gardening, cooking and knitting. 

She was predeceased by her husband, George, in 2011, and her daughter Margaret in 2018. She is survived by her children Donna, Andrzej and George, all of Riverhead, and Zbigniew of Florida; her sister, Eltsbeth of Germany; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. 

Visitors will be received Monday, Nov. 18, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A service will take place Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 10 a.m. at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead followed by interment at St. Isidore Cemetery. 

Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice.

McKinley Ross

McKinley Ross of Riverhead died Nov. 15 at Kanas Center for Hospice Care in Quiogue. He was 62.

He was born April 2, 1957, to Roberta Ross and Charlie Brown in Aurora, N.C.

Mr. McKinley married Marilyn (nee Green) in June of 1991.

He served in the U.S. Army where he received many awards. He made a career as a maintenance mechanic with the Town of Riverhead.

His family said he enjoyed fishing, baseball, soccer, family and was a fan of the New York Mets.

Mr. McKinley was predeceased by his parents and his sister Darlene Randall. He is survived by his wife, who resides in Riverhead; his children, Anthony Brown of Mastic, Cassondra Church of Riverhead, Roshell Ross of Calverton and Paula Ross of Riverhead; siblings Clyde Ross, Herbert Ross, Willie Mae Davender, Willie Davender, Sheryl Tucker, Charlene Brown and Charles Brown; and 10 grandchildren.

Visitors will be received Friday, Nov. 22, at 10 a.m. at Galilee Church of God in Christ in Riverhead with a service at 11 a.m. Interment with military honors will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Caroline Ostrander Loschen

Caroline Ostrander Loschen, a longtime resident of Laurel, N.Y., passed away peacefully at home Nov. 7, 2019, at the age of 92.

Born and raised in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., she attended Delhi University prior to moving to Long Island.

Here she met and married Walter Loschen (passed away in 1985), raised her family in Bellmore and worked many years at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre and Riverhead Free Library. Walter and Carol had three sons.

Carol is survived by her children, Robert, James and Stephen; daughters-in-law, Cynthia Loschen and Anne Loschen; as well as three grandchildren, Jessica, Matthew and Travis.

Visitors were received Nov. 16 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where funeral services took place officiated by Caren Heacock. Interment was private.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to Meals on Wheels, c/o Town of Southold, P.O. Box 85, Mattituck, NY 11952.

Mary Louise Rabe

Mary Louise Rabe passed away peacefully at San Simeon by the Sound in Greenport Nov. 17, 2019, at the age of 95.

She was born the only child to Mary L. (Martin) and William A. Holmquist in Brooklyn April 14, 1924.

In 1947, Mary married her beloved husband, Kurt, and in 1958 they moved to Coram, N.Y., where she raised her two children. Mary loved her family, loved music, loved to dance, but mostly she loved to laugh and make people laugh.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years. She is survived by her children William Rabe (Barbara) of Manassas, Va., and Ellen Creighton of Southold; N.Y.; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mary’s children are grateful to the CNA’s, nursing staff, doctor’s, professional staff and staff members at San Simeon by the Sound for caring for Mary these past years of her life. Mary had made bonds with many of them and their compassion was comforting.

A graveside funeral service will take place Thursday, Nov. 21, at 11 a.m. at Calverton National Cemetery.

DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold is serving the family.

Kelley Marie Blanchard

Kelley Marie Blanchard of Southold died tragically Nov. 10, 2019. She was 27 years old.Kelley was born Oct. 26, 1992, in Riverhead, N.Y., to Judith (Verrastro) and William R. Blanchard Jr.

After graduating from Southold High School, she attended Suffolk Community College for Culinary Arts.

She was a guardian member of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which she was very proud of. She was also a member of St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold.

Most recently she worked as an auto sales associate at Riverhead Nissan, where she was head of sales for several months.

Kelley is survived by her parents, William R. Blanchard Jr. (Nina) and Judith Blanchard; her sister, Megan Blanchard of Southold; and her grandparents Rosemarie Blanchard of New Suffolk and Dominic and Bobby Verrastro of Virginia Beach.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the Southold Town Police Department, Mattituck Fire Department, Cutchogue Fire Department, Department of Environmental Conservation, Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, Peconic Bay Medical Center, New York State Police and the U.S. Coast Guard for their hard work and effort during their time of need.

The family received friends Nov. 17 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 18 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, officiated by Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt.

The Rite of Committal was private.

Former Southold resident Cynthia L. Nelson of Virginia Beach, Va., passed away peacefully Nov. 19, 2019.Born Nov. 6, 1924, in Pittsburgh, Pa., Cynthia lived a full life and will be remembered as a gentle and loving wife, mom, Gma, aunt and friend.

A graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan and Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing, Cynthia was retired from Eastern Long Island Hospital and San Simeon by the Sound.

She was active in Eastern Star and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and volunteered at Horton Point Lighthouse and for the Suffolk County Board of Elections.

Predeceased by her husband, Fred, and sons, Eric and David, Cynthia is survived by her daughter, Gin, and grandson, Andrew; nieces and nephews, Adele Miller, Irene and Andy Devlin, Jim and Barb Anderson and Charlie and Janet Anderson; as well as many grand-nieces and -nephews.

Visitors will be received Friday morning, Nov. 29, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greenport, officiated by the Rev. Garrett Johnson. Interment will follow at Long Island National Cemetery in Pinelawn.

Evelyn Lee of Riverhead died Dec. 1. She was 94.

She was born May 11, 1925, to Mildred (Sinagra) and Angelo Marino in Brooklyn.

Ms. Lee was a homemaker and had seven children with her husband, Robert.

She was predeceased by Robert in 2008. She is survived by her children, Ronald, of Pennsylvania, Nadine Frigano of Riverhead, Eileen Zendler of Yaphank, Gerard, of Riverhead, Robert, of East Setauket, Philip, of Kings Park and David, of Saratoga Springs; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitors will be received Wednesday, Dec. 3, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A service will take place Thursday, Dec. 4, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead, followed by interment at Calverton National Cemetery.

Samuel Clyde Smothers of Riverhead died at his home Nov. 30. He was 66.

He was born Oct. 15, 1953, to Fannie (Hobson) and Santi Smothers.

His family said he enjoyed fishing, playing spades, dancing and making people laugh.

Mr. Smothers is survived by his siblings, Doris Langhorne, Alberta Magee and Thomas Smothers, all of Riverhead, and Alice Smothers of Florida.

A memorial service will take place Saturday, Dec. 7, at 10:30 a.m. at Galilee Church of God in Christ in Riverhead. McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead assisted the family with a private cremation.

Emil Fossa

Emil Fossa, 82, of Flanders, N.Y., passed away at his home Dec. 1, 2019.

He was born in Port Jefferson, N.Y., and was a local resident of Flanders for the last 18 years.

Emil was a 38-year employee of Lilco Power Company and a U.S. Navy veteran.

He is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Irene Fossa, and his two daughters, Aimee Fossa and Marie Perez. He is also survived by three very special grandchildren, Maggie Padavan, Josie Padavan and Jack Perez.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead, N.Y. Interment of cremated remains will take place immediately after at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Emil’s memory may be made to Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton, N.Y., or Southold Animal Shelter. Your donations are greatly appreciated by the family.

John Benedict ‘Ben’ Roache III

John Benedict “Ben” Roache III, lifelong resident of Laurel, died at home Nov. 28, 2019. He was 80 years old.

Ben was born Nov. 11, 1939, in Greenport, N.Y., to Margaret T. (Whittier) and John Benedict Roache.

After grammar school, he attended Staunton Military Academy in Virginia and then SUNY/Plattsburgh.

On July 15, 2007, he married the love of his life, Joan (Tuffy) Quinn-Roache and together they made their home in Laurel.

Ben worked as a teacher for the Central Islip Public School District for 31 years, retiring in 1998. He was also a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck.

He was predeceased by his daughter Megan, brother Peter and surrogate father and trusting lifelong friend, John Bennett.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; daughter Marie Roache of Palm Coast, Fla.; grandchildren, Timothy J. Roache, Patrick Tully, Hayden Blanco and Matteo Blanco; stepchild Cathryn (Timothy) Roache and children Ethan, Gabriel and Julianna Roache; stepchildren Tracey Pesale, Dennis Quinn and Tara Franco; 10 step-granddaughters; one step-great-granddaughter; brothers James Roache of Mattituck and Michael Roache of Rome, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.

The family received friends Dec. 1 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 2 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church, officiated by Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt. The Rite of Committal was private.

Hattie M. Henderson of Riverhead died at Peconic Bay Medical Center Nov. 30. She was 70.

She was born April 5, 1949, to Mary (Bullock) and Joseph Henderson in Henderson, N.C.

Ms. Henderson retired from PBMC, where she worked for 26 years. She also worked for Aid to the Developmentally Disabled for 29 years.

She was affiliated with the Long Island Breakthrough Center in Riverhead and, according to family, enjoyed going to church.

Ms. Henderson was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her children Anita Quinitchett of Elmira, N.Y., Gary Henderson of Bellport, Gloria Roundtree of Mastic and Deon and Dan Henderson, both of Riverhead; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitors will be received Saturday, Dec. 7, from noon to 2 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a service will take place at 2 p.m. Cremation will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to Long Island Breakthrough Center.

Paul Fizzuoglio Sr. of Riverhead died at Kanas Center for Hospice Care Nov. 26. He was 83. 

He was born May 23, 1936, to Nellie (Farro) and Vincent Fizzuoglio in Brooklyn. 

Mr. Fizzuoglio served in the United States Air Force and fought in the Korean War.

He is survived by his children Paul, Kerrie Lorandini, Rita Salgado, Cynthia Garcia, Wayne and Mark.

Visitors will be received Sunday, Dec. 7, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead where a service will take place at 2 p.m. officiated by Deacon Frank Barone with military honors by USAF.
