Dr. Jesse Robinson Goodale III, lovingly known as “Bobby,” passed away Nov.28, 2019 on Thanksgiving morning, at the age of 72.

Bobby was born to Jesse Robinson Goodale II and Mary Kase Lupton Dec. 15, 1946.

He is the third born child of five children and the eldest son. If you asked Bobby’s mother, “How did he get the nickname Bobby?” She would say, “It’s from his middle name, Robinson. It’s our family term of endearment!”

Bobby, a brilliant lifetime scholar, is the product of local public schools having attended Riverhead High School where he graduated at the top of his class and then attended Columbia University where he would spend the next 30 years learning and eventually teaching.

After earning his B.A., M.A. and two Ph.D’s from Columbia University in political science and philosophy, Bobby went on to become a professor at some of the country’s most prestigious universities including Columbia University, Texas A&I University, Barnard College and Iowa State University. He then returned to his hometown to work in his family business at Riverhead Building Supply.

Years later when he met his wife, Dhonna Goodale, Bobby realized, with his wife’s strong encouragement, that teaching was his true calling. She then suggested that he return to teaching college again and so in his later life, Bobby happily became an adjunct professor at Suffolk County Community College.

Bobby and his family are best known for founding Riverhead Building Supply Corporation where he served as vice-president. He also served as chief financial officer of Goodale Productions.

Bobby truly epitomized community service. He served passionately on numerous boards including serving as the chairman of United Way of Long Island’s East End Campaign Cabinet, Roberta Flack’s Charter School of Music, Riverhead Development Corporation, vice chairman of Suffolk County Community College Foundation, chairman of Eastern Long Island Health Alliance, chairman of Peconic Bay Medical Center and Peconic Bay Foundation Board for a total of 20 years, chairman of Foundation Board of Peconic Bay Medical Center, vice-chairman of the board of Peconic Bay Medical Center, chairman of the board of Peconic Bay Medical Center, vice-chair of the board of Peconic Bay Medical Center and treasurer and secretary of the board of Peconic Bay Medical Center.

Besides serving as chair of Eastern Suffolk School of Music and East End Arts Council, Bobby was its sole benefactor for the first 20 years. Bobby has also served as a former president of Riverhead Chamber of Commerce and as past chairman of Enterprise Park at Calverton (EPCAL). He has also worked as a chairman of Suffolk County Planning Board.

Bobby was also a preacher and deacon and supported his spiritual community by sitting on several boards at Old Steeple Church. Folks always noted what a great singer he was in and out of the church.

Bobby and his wife, Dhonna, were part of the exchange student program with the Riverhead Rotary and other exchange programs. They have two adopted exchange student sons, an older son from Transylvania, Romania, Marius Garbor, who they have visited with annually, and also have a son from Vietnam named Hein Nguyen, also through the student exchange program. Together, Bobby and Donna, created Tara L. Stevens Memorial Scholarship and Domestic Violence Foundation. Over the years Bobby and Dhonna have created numerous Christmas programs for children in need.

Bobby met his wife, Dhonna, in 1995 and soon fell in love. They married Aug. 30, 1996. To this union, two sons were born: Jesse Robinson Goodale, IV (J.R.) in 1998 and Jared Wade-Douglas Goodale (J) in 2000. Jesse is now a senior at University of Pennsylvania and Jared is now a senior at Full Sail University. The love Bobby and Dhonna shared over a lifetime is reflected in their renewal of vows four times over the course of their marriage and they suggest everyone do that to rejuvenate their marriage. Bobby was a devoted father and excellent educator to his sons. He will always be the best friend and most loving husband his wife could ever ask God for.

Jesse Robinson Goodale III is survived by his wife, Dhonna; sons Jesse (J.R.) and Jared (J); godsons Gregory (Jackie) Goodale and Yosuef Goulbourne; adopted sons D.J. Kenter, Curtis Flippen, Andrew Messiah and Xander Shirley; best friends Matt Heavy and Eugene Barrow; his siblings and their partners Russell, Edgar, Dianne, Carol, Cathy, Nancy, Ronan and Bill; his aunt, Gene Goodale; as well as an abundance of nieces, nephews, greats, nieces – in – laws, nephews – in – laws, cousins, friends and students; a community that will always love and respect him; and the legacy that lives on in his name. He is predeceased by his godson Keith Goodale and his sister-in-law Cathy Goodale

Visitors will be received Saturday, Dec. 7, from 3:30 to 9 p.m. at Living Water Full Gospel Church in Aquebogue.

Bobby Goodale, 72, remembered for generosity, devotion to family

Bobby Goodale was remembered for his generosity, intelligence and devotion to his family and community during a service in celebration of his life Sunday at Old Steeple Community Church in Aquebogue.

Mr. Goodale, 72, whose full name was Jesse Robinson Goodale III, died Thanksgiving morning at Peconic Bay Medical Center following a lengthy stay there.

Earlier in the week, his widow, Dhonna Goodale, had issued a statement listing the many businesses, charities and community activities he was involved in.

“Bobby truly epitomized community service,” it read.

Mr. Goodale served in numerous capacities at Peconic Bay Medical Center, was a former president of the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce, a former chairman of the Suffolk County Planning Board and a past chairman of the Riverhead Development Corporation at the Enterprise Park at Calverton, which screened potential uses for the property.

Many community members and relatives spoke Sunday, including Mr. Goodale’s sons, Jesse and Jared, and his brother, Edgar, who shared memories of his brother growing up.

Often, speakers became choked up at they spoke, fighting back tears.

“At that time I never really understood what he was all about,” Edgar said. “He was the one with his nose in a book, a French horn on his lips, a tennis racket in his hand and, in his head, a brilliant mind that would serve him the rest of his life. He graduated from high school top of his class.”

He had a degree in political science and, Edgar said, would say that he couldn’t have gotten a degree in anything that would pay less than his political science degree.

“Bobby stated this to me. He never complained,” he said.

Bobby worked at Riverhead Building Supply, the family business, for over 30 years, but his passion was politics, his brother said. Whether it be local, state, federal or foreign politics, Bobby knew about it.

“His knowledge of events and the people involved seemed endless,” Edgar said. “I would ask Bobby, ‘Who is that person who is waiting for a particular office?’ and without hesitation, he would speak eloquently of the person‘s resume and how wonderful the person was and then state he doesn’t have a chance in hell of winning. He was always correct.”

Edgar said his brother missed his real calling, as a diplomat.

“He was a consensus-builder, someone who could bring common sense into a situation that was spiraling out of control.”

Mr. Goodale’s son Jesse, whose full name is Jesse Robinson Goodale IV, said it’s best to describe his father in different ways.

He was a scholar who tutored his sons in history and English and was an adjunct professor at Suffolk County Community College.

“He appreciated not only learning, but teaching,” Jesse said.

He was a joker, who would also keep a light mood, and he was a practical, realistic person who loved playing chess.

Jesse said he challenged his father in chess, saying he would get a trophy if he won.

“A normal parent would let their child win,” Jesse joked. “He was not a normal parent. I never did beat him in chess … he wanted me to work for things because he knew that I wasn’t going to get everything handed to me, and I’m glad that I did learn that lesson.”

His brother, Jared, recalled that his father loved news and sports.

“I would come into the kitchen so many times where he’d be watching Rachel Maddow, or I would catch him watching the Yankees and getting mad because the Yankees were losing,” Jared said.

“People used to say that I got a Harvard education right at home and I believed that. He taught me so much,” Jared said. “There’s a saying that God puts the heaviest burden on those that can carry the weight, and I believe that. Even though he’s physically gone, he’s always going to be around.”

Attorney John Ciarelli recalled working with Mr. Goodale on Riverhead Building Supply issues.

“He was a person of intelligence and sensitivity,” Mr. Ciarelli said. “It should be no surprise that one quickly realizes he’s an intelligent and thoughtful person. It was obvious that I was interacting with somebody who was smarter than I was.”

Helene Schneider, Mr. Goodale’s niece, said, “Uncle Bobby was my political science teacher. He was the go-to guy when I was growing up and had some questions about a current event or something related to government … I know he loved Mario Cuomo. I don’t think he liked Ed Koch.”

She recalled that her uncle “was an investor in big dreams. Especially ones that were long shots.”

“Bobby was such a wonderful man,” said Dr. Chandra Jones, Dhonna Goodale’s sister. “I don’t have to stand here and tell you all the things he’s accomplished in his life because you already know those things. But I can tell you about a deep, deep love affair that only Bobby and Dhonna shared, and that turned into two glorious young men.”

Mr. Goodale is one of the few people who received News-Review People of the Year awards more than once. He was the 1992 Person of the Year in Riverhead, and co-winner of the 1994 Civic Person of the Year, along with downtown business owner Barry Barth.

“He had the heart of Riverhead in his mind all the time,” Mr. Barth was quoted as saying of him in 1992.

Bobby’s father, Jesse Goodale II, was the News-Review’s first Person of the Year recipient in 1988.

Jack Kratoville said Mr. Goodale was very active in Old Steeple Church over the years, but that he was amazed by how many other things he was involved in, which were detailed in the obituary.

“I don’t know how he found time for all of these,” Mr. Kratoville said.

Bobby Goodale was buried at Aquebogue Cemetery, on Main Road opposite Old Steeple Church, and town police stopped traffic so his casket could be carried across the street, followed by a lengthy procession.

He was a deep thinker who considered all sides of an argument before forming an opinion, whether it concerned a political vote, a logistical decision or the purchase of a kayak. With his wife, Theresa (deceased), they moved their family from the Bronx to Stony Brook in 1965 to provide the children with a quality education and a better lifestyle. They raised their four children to be responsible and productive members of society. As a family they enjoyed sailing on Long Island Sound and owned several sailboats. After retiring to Riverhead, Dan enjoyed kayaking on the local rivers, cross-country skiing and bicycling.

A true native son has passed Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019, at the age of 70.

Ned Harroun of Southold spent his entire life on the East End. As a boy he loved the water and all her spoils. His school days were spent on the playground at Greenport School, as were his father’s before him.

He matured into manhood and worked as a tree man, an arborist. Ned was the owner of the first tree company on the East End. Island Tree Company stood alone until it didn’t. He became a certified arborist when accreditation first began, and remained a certified arborist. Ned had an intimate relationship with the green giants that grew and was deeply aware how to enhance nature. He had customers that spanned decades; they never lost his phone number. This tree man was really good at his profession. His expertise, God’s gift, will be missed.

Ned William Harroun is survived by his wife, Mary Anne Harroun; his daughters, Paula and Jessica Harroun; his grandchildren, Brooke and Ryan; and his sisters, Ellen Buchanan and Barbara Quinn. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Mark Harroun; together again.

Viewing will take place Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020, from 1 to 5 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where a memorial service will be held at 4 p.m.

He is a man to be celebrated.

This is a paid notice.
