Troy Smolen

Troy Smolen of Riverhead, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly Jan. 13, 2020, at the age of 52.

He leaves behind a daughter, Ashley Scanlon; mother, Sandra Austin, and stepfather, Lyle Austin; father, Gerald Smolen; brother Jason Smolen (Sheri); sister, Jaime Longmaid (A.J.); brother Jonathan Austin (Megan); aunts; uncles; two nieces; two nephews; and cousins.

He was predeceased by his grandparents, Marian and John Hunter and Sophie and Eugene Smolen.

Loved, remembered and held so dear.

Ralph A. McElheny

Ralph A. McElheny of Riverhead, N.Y., died at East End Hospice Kanas Center for Hospice Care Jan. 22. He was 90.

He was born Dec. 18, 1929, to Gertrude Ann Schmidt and Gilbert Earl McElheny in Elizabeth, N.J.

Ralph earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Purdue University and made a career as an engineer for Hazeltine in Little Neck, N.Y.

Ralph served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953 to 1960. Throughout that time, he was an officer and was later ranked captain and obtained many medals, including the National Defense Service Medal, Navy Occupation Services Medal with European Campaign Clasp and Rifle Expert.

Family said that Ralph was an avid reader.

Ralph leaves behind his spouse, Joan Galvano; his children, David (Henrietta), Donald (Christie), Susan (Jeff) Racow; and his stepchildren, Jocelyn Picket, Chris (Bridget) Galvano, Lisa (Evert-Jan M. Imkamp) Galvano, Dina Galvano, Mateo Galvano (David Russell), Marc Galvano and Jessica Galvano (Chris Front). He was an adored grandfather and great-grandfather to many grand- and great-grandchildren.

The family held a visitation Jan. 26 at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a prayer service also took place.

Harry J. Kratoville Jr.

Harry J. Kratoville Jr. of Naples, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly Monday, Jan. 6, 2020.

Harry was born in Greenport, N.Y., Nov. 1, 1930, to Harry J. and Dorothy (Howell) Kratoville.

He grew up in Riverhead, N.Y., with his younger brother, John (Louise), and sister, Virginia (Raymond) Taylor, both of whom survive him.

He graduated from Riverhead High School in 1948.

Harry proudly served our country in the Korean War from 1953 to 1955 as a lieutenant tank commander in the U.S. Marine Corps. He graduated from Hartwick College and went on to earn a master’s degree at the American Institute for Foreign Trade.

Harry met the love of his life, Grace Shirley Smith, while they were in college and together they celebrated 65 years of marriage.

In addition to Shirley, Harry is survived by his children, David (Karin) Kratoville, Karen Kratoville and Dr. Steven Kratoville.

George D. Schoenberg

George D. Schoenberg enjoyed a lifetime of music until he passed away Jan. 24, 2020. He was 95.

Born on Jan. 28, 1924, in Clarksboro, N.J., to Edward and Adele Schoenberg, he shared most of his life with his wife, Florence, who predeceased him in 2016. They were married for 66 years.

After studying organ and piano as a child, he enrolled in Temple University to continue his music education. But then duty called. He was a pilot with the 368th Fighter Group of the Air Force and flew the P-47 Thunderbolt in the European Theater of Operations from 1943 to 1947. He loved to tell old war stories. After the war, he returned to Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his BS and MS degrees in music education.

He taught music in the public schools of Woodstown, N.J., Glens Falls, N.Y., and Malverne, N.Y. In addition to teaching, he also was the organist and choir director in churches and a synagogue in New Jersey and New York, including St. James United Methodist Church in Lynbrook, N.Y., for 40 years and Central Synagogue in Rockville Centre, N.Y., for 20 years. He held the position of dean of the Nassau Chapter of the American Guild of Organists from 1986 to 1988. After he and Florence moved to Baiting Hollow from Malverne, he was the interim organist at Old Steeple Community Church in Aquebogue, N.Y., from 2000 to 2007.

He is survived by his daughter, Christine, of New York, N.Y.; his son, Paul, of Centennial, Colo.; a step-granddaughter, Norine, and her husband, Brian; and a step-great-granddaughter, Lily.

Visiting hours will be held at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead on Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Old Steeple Community Church Thursday, Jan. 30, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of Old Steeple Community Church.

Audrey H. Hazzard of Riverhead, N.Y., died peacefully at her home Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020, after a brief illness. She was 66.

Predeceased by her parents, Emil and Lorraine (Poudel) Breitenbach, she is survived by her husband, Robert; children Rebecca (Brian) Hazzard-Corwin, Helene (John) Hazzard-Michalski and Jared Hazzard; three grandchildren; a sister, Jane Lewin; and a brother, Emil (Diane) Breitenbach.

There will be a memorial service Saturday, Feb. 1, at noon at Christ Lutheran Church, 177 Frowein Road, East Moriches, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Audrey to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978. Envelopes will be provided at the church on Saturday.

Laura Ann Tague of Riverhead died at North Shore University Hospital Jan. 29. She was 57. 

Ms. Tague was born Dec. 29, 1962, to MaryAnn (DeSorbo) and Howard Tague in Mineola, N.Y.

She graduated from Riverhead High School and made a career as account clerk typist for Town of Riverhead. 

Ms. Tague was active with Flanders Fire Department. Her family said she loved caring for her dogs. 

She is survived by her parents, who reside in Riverhead. 

A memorial will take place Saturday, Feb. 1, from 2 to 6 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. The funeral home assisted the family with a private cremation.

William Buniski

William Buniski died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2020, in Bradenton, Fla. He was 79.

He was born March 2, 1940, in Port Jefferson, N.Y., to Mary (Kalinoski) and Joseph J. Buniski (Bujnicki) and grew up on the family farm in Wading River.

He graduated from Port Jefferson High School in 1958.

He served in the U.S. Air Force as an air policeman from 1961 to 1964. He worked for Pratt & Whitney as a security guard for 27 years.

He was a resident of South Windsor, Conn., before relocating to Bradenton.

He was an avid Yankees fan and enjoyed dining out. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his daughter and best friend, Christine; her mother, Carolyn, the love of his life; his brother, Donald Buniski (Elizabeth) of Wading River; and many cousins.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m., at Sarasota Veterans Cemetery in Sarasota, Fla.

Edwin M. Stelzer

Edwin M. Stelzer of Damariscotta, Maine, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Sussman House in Rockport, Maine, Jan. 12, 2020.

Ed was born in Riverhead, Long Island, N.Y., on Feb. 24, 1941.

After graduating from Riverhead High School, Class of 1959, he went on to graduate in 1963 from the New York State Maritime Academy at Fort Schuyler with a degree in marine engineering and naval architecture.

Ed was always a committed and patriotic employee, working as a civilian for the Navy at the Supervisor of Shipbuilding office in Bath, Maine. He retired after 35 years of service to pursue his favorite hobbies, including boating, fishing, gardening and spending quality time with his family.

He was predeceased by his parents, Laurence F. and Kathleen R. Stelzer; his brothers, J. William and Richard L. Stelzer; and his nephew Gregory A. Stelzer.

Ed leaves behind his loving wife, Wendy L. Stelzer of Damariscotta; daughter, Bonnie S. Stelzer of Damariscotta; son, Laurence W. Stelzer and his wife, Amy M., of Union, Maine; son, Matthew E. Stelzer of Arrowsic; two beautiful granddaughters, Kiya and Eilee of Union; a sister, Mary F. Roche of Riverhead, N.Y.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A service to remember Ed was held Jan. 19 at Strong-Hancock Funeral Home in Damariscotta.

Edward J. Bruzdoski of Riverhead, N.Y., died peacefully Jan. 31, 2020, at East End Hospice Kanas Center for Hospice Care. He was 99 years old.

Edward was predeceased by his wife, Felicia. He is survived by his daughter, Maureen Barnes; his son-in-law, Leroy Barnes Jr.; his granddaughter, Tara Barnes Iacono, and her husband, Patrick; and his great-grandson, Enzo.

He served our country during World War II as a special artificer on the USS Hammondsport.

A funeral service will take place Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 9:30 a.m. St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Burial will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Donations to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978 would be greatly appreciated.

Shirley C. Nash

Shirley C. Nash of Riverhead died Feb. 3 at East End Hospice Kanas Center for Hospice Care. She was 82.

She was born Aug. 3, 1937, to Rosa (Groce) and Albert Monroe in Cordova, Md.

She completed high school and later married Marshall Lee Nash, who died Oct. 3, 2008.

The couple owned and operated a successful cesspool company.

Ms. Nash is survived by her son, Lawrence (Christy); her daughter, Dana; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitors will be received Friday, Feb. 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 15, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. A service will also take place at the funeral home Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Washington Memorial Park in Mount Sinai.

Stella Mackno of Greenport, formerly of Riverhead, died at San Simeon by the Sound Jan. 28. She was 92.

Ms. Mackno was born Aug. 17, 1927, to Anne (Waunk) and John Daichun in Eastport, N.Y.

She was a farmer who enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family and was a member of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Church.

Ms. Mackno was predeceased by her husband, John. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Kalitowski of California and her sister, Minnie Skudlarek of Eastport. 

Visitors will be received Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A service will take place Thursday, Feb. 6, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Church in Riverhead followed by interment at St. John’s Cemetery in Riverhead. 

Memorial donations may be made to San Simeon by the Sound.

Carl (Chuck) H. Schneider

Major Carl (Chuck) H. Schneider of Riverhead, age 97 and a resident of Riverhead, passed away Feb. 4, 2020, at Peconic Bay Medical Center. 

He was born April 17, 1922, to Elizabeth (Heinrich) and Carl Schneider in New York, N.Y.

Mr. Schneider was a veteran of World War II where he served as a fighter pilot and of the Korean War where he was a fighter-bomber pilot in the U.S. Air Force. Retiring after 20 years of service, he worked in the Riverhead courts and retired from there as well. 

He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Peggy Schneider; his nephews Robert, Richard, Thomas and William of East Lansing, Mich.; and his cousin, Verona Strebel of Center Moriches, N.Y.

Visitors will be received Monday, Feb. 10, at 10 a.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Interment with military honors will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Riverhead.

Aniello ‘Neal’ D. Catapano

Aniello “Neal” D. Catapano of Southold died suddenly Feb. 7 at his home. The owner of Catapano Farms was 55.

Neal was born Nov. 30, 1964, in Bethpage, N.Y., to Jeanne M. (Bierling) and Salvatore M. Catapano.

He owned and operated Catapano Farms in Southold since 1986 and was also the owner of thewarstore.com from 1999 to 2019.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Catapano; children, Daniel Catapano (Kimberly) and Brianne Catapano; grandchild, Natalie Catapano; and siblings, Michele Castillo, Sal Catapano and Dr. Michael Catapano.

Visitors will be received Wednesday, Feb. 12, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home’s chapel. The Rev. Richard Jensen of Hope Reformed Baptist Church in Coram will officiate. The Rite of Committal will be private.

Arthur A. Stakey of Aquebogue died at New York Presbyterian Hospital Feb. 10, 2020. He was 83.

Mr. Stakey was born June 9, 1936, to Elfrieda Janke and Albert H. Stakey.

He graduated from Riverhead High School in 1954.

He made a career as a farmer and terminal operator for Northville Industries.

His family said he had been farming since he was 4 years old and was an “amazing husband and dad but the best grandfather.”

Mr. Stakey was predeceased by his daughter Donna Stakey and sister Marion Palmer. He is survived by his wife, Christine; daughters Elizabeth (John) Tanzi and Tammy (Michael) Arnau; grandchildren Jack, Joseph, Paige, Emily and Eric; and sister June S. Fuller.

Visitors will be received Friday, Feb. 14, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Tuthill Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home Saturday, Feb. 15, at 10 a.m. before burial at East Marion Cemetery.

She was born April 15, 1935, in Gagos, Portugal, to Abilio Alpendre and Ana Alexandre.

Ms. Young is survived by her husband, Howard Young.

William A. Meyer

William A. Meyer died Feb. 13 at his home in Aquebogue. He was 87.

Born Jan. 30, 1933, in Queens, he was the son of August and Bertha Meyer. 

Mr. Meyer graduated in 1951 from Richmond Hill High School. He served with the Marines from 1951 to 1955. He worked as an operating engineer with Local 138 in Farmingdale.

He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Aquebogue; belonged to the Riverhead Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving as a Suffolk County VFW officer; and was a member of the Riverhead American Legion. His hobbies included fishing, gardening and cooking Sunday. breakfasts.

Besides his wife, Sharon (née Long), he is survived by his sons, Gregory, of Calverton; Bill, of Washington; Donald, of Farmingville; Joseph, of Riverhead; and Stephen, of Washington. He is also survived by two sisters, Rusty Meyer and Johanna Davila, both of Florida; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild expected in May.

Cecelia E. Zaleski of Jamesport died Feb. 12 at Peconic Bay Skilled Nursing Facility in Riverhead. She was 87.

She was born Nov. 5, 1932, in Laurel to Joseph Gergela and Anna Zaveski.

Ms. Zaleski loved the farm life on the Zaleski family farm. She belonged to the Jamesport Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Predeceased by her husband, Raymond, she is survived by her children, Susan (Lawrence) Yovanoff, Kathleen (Timothy) and Mark (Rebecca Hockaday) Zaleski; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, at Tuthill Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead, with a funeral service officiated by Father Piotr at 3 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17, at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, at St. Isidore Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association.
