William A. Meyer

William A. Meyer died Feb. 13 at his home in Aquebogue. He was 87.

Born Jan. 30, 1933, in Queens, he was the son of August and Bertha Meyer.

Mr. Meyer graduated in 1951 from Richmond Hill High School. He served with the Marines from 1951 to 1955. He worked as an operating engineer with Local 138 in Farmingdale.

He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Aquebogue; belonged to the Riverhead Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving as a Suffolk County VFW officer; and was a member of the Riverhead American Legion. His hobbies included fishing, gardening and cooking Sunday breakfasts.

Besides his wife, Sharon (née Long), he is survived by his sons, Gregory, of Calverton; Bill, of Washington; Donald, of Farmingville; Joseph, of Riverhead; and Stephen, of Washington. He is also survived by two sisters, Rusty Meyer and Johanna Davila, both of Florida; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild expected in May.

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead, with a service during the evening hours. Interment will take place at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at Calverton National Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Riverhead Police Benevolent Association or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Cecelia E. Zaleski

Cecelia E. Zaleski of Jamesport died Feb. 12 at Peconic Bay Skilled Nursing Facility in Riverhead. She was 87.

She was born Nov. 5, 1932, in Laurel to Joseph Gergela and Anna Zaveski.

Ms. Zaleski loved the farm life on the Zaleski family farm. She belonged to the Jamesport Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Predeceased by her husband, Raymond, she is survived by her children, Susan (Lawrence) Yovanoff, Kathleen (Timothy) Knapp and Mark (Rebecca Hockaday) Zaleski; and six grandchildren.

The family received visitors Feb. 16 at Tuthill Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead, with a funeral service officiated by Father Piotr. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17, at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, at St. Isidore Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association.

Gail Heck

Gail Heck of Laurel died Monday, Feb. 3, 2020. She was 85 years old.

Gail was born Aug. 11, 1934, to Leroy and Lillian (Gertie) Hagerstrom in Jamaica, Queens.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, LTC William E. Heck Jr.; and her brother, Alva Hagerstrom. Gail is survived by her daughter, Karen (Will), of Mattituck; her son, Roy (Kiera), of Aquebogue; and her six wonderful grandchildren: Abigail, Addison, Morgan, Gavin, Trey and Kara. Gail also leaves behind her sister-in-law, Carol; her niece, Kristin, and nephew, Jon (Gloria), and their children, Nicole, Emily, Devon, Blake, Casey and Jayden.

Gail married the love of her life, Bill, on June 11, 1955, and they embarked on a journey with the U.S. Army for 20 years. They lived in many places around the world, including Germany, Panama and Puerto Rico. They loved spending time in Southampton, where her father had built a bungalow on Cold Spring Pond. Gail and Bill decided to “retire” to Laurel — where Gail had spent every summer as a child on Peconic Bay — when they had their children.

For over 40 years, Gail was a very active participant in Mattituck Presbyterian Church, holding many positions including deacon and elder. Gail also helped to start a Moms In Touch group on the North Fork.

One of Gail’s passions was decorating the boards throughout the church hallways to show the work and faith of the congregation. Gail was a Girl Scout leader in both Germany and Mattituck for many years. She also enjoyed vacationing with Bill once he retired. More recently, Gail was a volunteer at John’s Place, helping out however she was able.

Gail will be missed and loved. She brought faith to many.

The family received friends Feb. 6 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Funeral services were held Feb. 7 at Mattituck Presbyterian Church, officiated by Caren Heacock. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.

Vincent J. Daley

Vincent J. Daley of Brookhaven, formerly of Aquebogue, died Feb. 17 at age 87.

Born Dec. 2, 1932, in Lindenhurst, he was the son of Vincent and Elizabeth Daley.

Mr. Daley served with the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. He worked in Babylon as a commercial clammer. His family said he enjoyed gardening.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnne; children, Vincent C. Daley of East Patchogue, Joyce Austin of Ridge and David, of Mexico, N.Y.; a brother, Joseph; two sisters, Mary Linger and Helen Glazer; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Interment will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at Calverton National Cemetery.

Wayne Ehlers Jr.

Lifelong Riverhead resident Wayne Ehlers Jr. died Feb. 15. He was 40.

He was born in Southampton July 14, 1979, to Irene (McDermott) and Wayne Ehlers Sr. and attended Riverhead High School.

He worked as a driver for auto repossession in Riverhead and was a member of the Flanders Northampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Mr. Ehlers was predeceased by his mother and a son, Wayne John Henry Ehlers III. He is survived by his father; his children, Brendan McLoughlin, Zachary Ehlers, Miranda Ehlers and Sebastian Ehlers, all of Riverhead; and siblings Kelly Hartmayer, Noel Ehlers and Robert Ehlers, all of Riverhead.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Feb. 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Family and friends may meet at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, to travel to graveside services and interment at 11 a.m. at Pinelawn Memorial Cemetery in Farmingdale.

Lynn Renee Ligon

Lynn Renee Ligon of Riverhead died Feb. 10. She was 57.

Born on March 19, 1962, she was the daughter of Barbara and Richard Ligon.

Predeceased by her father in 2017, she is survived by her mother and her son, Curtis Flippen.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Feb. 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Visitation will take place at Galilee Church of God in Christ Saturday, Feb. 22, from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a service at 11 a.m.

Interment will follow at Riverhead Cemetery.

Ellen M. Saunders

Riverhead resident Ellen M. Saunders died Feb. 16 at her home. She was 74.

Born March 8, 1945, in the Bronx, she was the daughter of Peter McLean and Margaret Manley. For a portion of her life she was raised by her foster parents, Louise and Frank Jeducka.

She was a 1963 graduate of Flushing High School. A Riverhead resident since 1974, she worked as a waitress for Cliff’s Elbow Too for more than 30 years.

She served as president and vice president of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Family said she liked wine, NASCAR and President Trump.

She was predeceased by her husband, Franklin R. Saunders Sr., and son Franklin Jr. She is survived by her children James Hinchy, Rosemary Brown and Cynthia Cormier, all of Riverhead, and Pamela Conway of Mattituck; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Feb. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead, followed by interment at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cut­ch­ogue.

Riverhead resident Laurence I. Judd died Feb. 19 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. He was 76.

Diane S. Robinson of Riverhead died Feb. 15 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She was 68.

Ms. Robinson was born Nov. 3, 1951, in Columbia, Md.

She worked in the manufacturing industry as a punch press operator for AMP-AKZO Company.

She was predeceased by her daughter Tina and is survived by her daughter April; grandchildren, Jacob Robinson, Serenity Briggs and Jermaine Daniels Robinson; close friends James Harris and Sharon Davis; and a host of friends and family.

The family will receive visitors from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead, followed by a funeral service from 2 to 4 p.m., with the Rev. James Harris officiating.

Carolyn J. Guyton

Riverhead resident Carolyn J. Guyton died Feb. 17 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. She was 69.

Born Aug. 22, 1950, in Greenville, N.C., she was the daughter of Henry and Eva (Spruill) Clemons.

Ms. Guyton worked at Suffolk Life Newspapers and retired as a housekeeper at Peconic Bay Medical Center. According to family, she enjoyed reading, yardwork and casinos.

She was predeceased by her son Jason Guyton in 1993. She is survived by her husband, Steve; her children Lawanda Clemons, Jawanda Bland and Jeremy Guyton, all of Riverhead; her mother, of North Carolina; many siblings; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, at Galilee Church of God in Christ in Riverhead, followed by a funeral service at 11. Interment will take place at Riverhead Cemetery.

John A. Wilcenski Sr.

John A. Wilcenski Sr. of Mattituck passed away Feb. 13, 2020, surrounded by his loving family. He was 87 years old.

John was born Aug. 18, 1932, in Laurel, to Mary Anna (née Peksa) and Alexander Wilcenski. He graduated from Mattituck High School in 1950, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy on his 18th birthday and served his country for four years.

On May 2, 1959, John married his wife, Jeannette (née Cichanowicz) Wilcenski, and they made their home in Mattituck for the past 61 years.

John was employed at Brookhaven National Laboratory for 38 years, working as a cryogenic technician. He was an ex-chief, active and honorary member of the Mattituck Fire Department for 64 years.

John was the most cherished dziadek, father and husband. A loving description from one of his grandchildren: “What a sweet, determined, hardworking, fun-loving man! I am forever thankful for the gift of life and family he brought me and for all the love and laughs we got to share.”

Predeceased by his daughter Deborah A. Wisowaty in February of 2018, he is survived by his wife, Jeannette; children John A. Wilcenski Jr. (Susan) of Westhampton, Patricia (William K.) Granneman of Califon, N.J. and Cutchogue and Donald Wilcenski of Southold; seven cherished grandchildren, William J. (Colleen) Granneman, Katherine Wilcenski, Alexandra Wilcenski, Elizabeth Wilcenski, Alex Wilcenski, Andrew Wilcenski and Laurel Wilcenski; and one great-granddaughter, Emily Ann Granneman.

Visitors were received Feb. 16 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial Mass was celebrated Feb. 17 at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue, officiated by Father Robert Wolosik. U.S. Navy honors were rendered following the Mass. Interment took place at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Memorial donations may be made to Mattituck Fire Department.

Karen Ann Helinski

Karen Ann Helinski of Southold Town passed away Monday, Feb. 24, 2020. She was 58 years old.

Born in Greenport and raised in Cutchogue, Karen was a lifelong resident of the North Fork.

She was the beloved daughter of Jane (Orlowski) and Anthony Domaleski.

She graduated from Mattituck High School and attended college at CW Post – Long Island University, where she studied marketing.

She married the love of her life, Thomas M. Helinski, on Nov. 15, 1986, at our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue. They have lived in Southold for the past 33 years.

Karen was active around town. She worked as a CPA and owned an accounting firm in Southold. She also served as treasurer for the Southold Fire District and enjoyed attending mass at Saint Patrick’s R.C. Church.

Predeceased by her parents, Jane and Anthony, and her sister, Alice Domaleski, she is survived by her husband, Thomas; daughter Kristen Callahan and her husband, Daniel, of Watertown, Mass.; and brother John Domaleski and his wife, Vareen, of Warren, R.I.

Karen found joy making jewelry, taking summer boat rides on Peconic Bay and spending time with her daughter, Kristen. Karen could always be spotted around town, whether it was browsing at the Book Cottage or attending a fundraiser at the firehouse.

Visitors will be received Thursday, Feb. 27, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Feb. 28, at 10 a.m. at Saint Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold, officiated by Father John Barrett. Interment will follow at Saint Patrick’s R.C. Cemetery in Southold.

Artemios V. Tsismenakis

Artemios V. Tsismenakis of East Marion died Friday, Feb. 14, 2020. He was 89 years old.

Artemios was born Nov. 30, 1930, in Agios Georgios, Keramia, Chania, Crete, Greece, to Sophia Theodora (Kapenekakis) and Vasilios Georgiou Tsismenakis.

He went on to attend Panagia Keramia Elementary School in Crete, Greece, and then graduate from Charles Evans Hughes High School on 18th Street and 8th Avenue in New York City. After high school, he attended Maryland University of the Military, Wisconsin University-Correspondence Courses and International Electric Institute, attaining an automotive and electrical certificate, and is a graduate of the University of Hard Knocks with honors.

Artemios married the love of his life, Stella Kapassakis, on June 25, 1960, at Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Manhattan, N.Y., and together they had four children.

Artemios immigrated to the United States and came to Baltimore, Md., on Nov. 8, 1951, then moved to Manhattan in 1952. As a young boy he was part of the civilian resistance to the Nazi occupation of Crete, Greece, during World War II as a freedom fighter. He served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958, attaining the rank of E3T special structural steel engineer, and was honorably discharged with the Good Conduct Medal. He also served in Tripoli, Libya, as a member of the 6th Army Rifle Team.

He lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., since 1958 and part-time in East Marion since 1967, finally moving to East Marion full-time in 1995.

He was a member of NY State Real Estate Brokers, Alma Garment Union, Tailor IKA from 1946-1950, Cretan Association Omonia as an officer, Cretan Brotherhood of New York as an officer, Three Hierarchs Greek Orthodox Church as a parish council member, Ahepa “Pindos Chapter” since 1957, Pancretan Association of America, Saints Anargyroi, Taxiarchis & Gerasimos Greek Orthodox Church in Greenport, N.Y., Three Hierarchs Greek Orthodox Church in Brooklyn, N.Y., Transfiguration of Christ Greek Orthodox Church in Mattituck, N.Y., Kimisis Theotokou Greek Orthodox Church in Brooklyn, N.Y., Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church in Manhattan, N.Y., and Greek Orthodox Church of the Assumption in Windham, N.Y.

He worked as a shoemaker, tailor, farmer, truck driver, electrician, painter, restaurateur, real estate investor and finally as a self-employed manager and real estate broker of Atlas Sales Realty since 1970.

He was especially proud of his real estate investments and developments. He loved everyone and he loved America.

Predeceased by his parents, siblings Nicolas V. Tsismenakis, George V. Tsismenakis and Emmanuel V. Tsismenakis and uncle James Tsismenakis, he is survived by his wife, Stella; children Sofia Antoniadis (Michael) of East Marion, Georgia A. Tsismenakis of Shelter Island, Vasilia H.A. Tsismenakis (Aristides Georgelis) of East Marion and Bayside, N.Y., and Artemios N.A. Tsismenakis of East Marion; grandchildren Domna Antoniadis-Kelly (Robert Kelly), Nicholas Antoniadis, George Georgelis and Artemios Georgelis; great-grandchild Thanasis Antoniadis-Kelly; cousins John and Eleni Tsismenakis of Massachusetts; and cousins, nephews and nieces and godchildren in Greece, Australia, New York and Massachusetts.

The family received friends Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2020, at Dahill Funeral Home in Brooklyn, N.Y. Visitation and funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2020, on the North Fork. Visitation began at 11 a.m. followed by the funeral liturgy at noon at Transfiguration of Christ Greek Orthodox Church in Mattituck. Interment followed at East Marion Cemetery in East Marion, N.Y., where the United States Army rendered military honors.

Makaria meal was at O’Mally’s in Southold, N.Y.

Hilary E. Wowak

Hilary E. Wowak of Calverton died at home Feb. 23. He was 83.

Mr. Wowak was born Feb. 17, 1937, to Josephine (Yousik) and Stanley Wowak in Riverhead.

He graduated from Riverhead High School in 1954 and earned a bachelor’s degree from New York Institute of Technology.

Mr. Wowak retired as a sergeant with the Suffolk County Police Department in 1994 and enjoyed golfing and traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Carol (Tyska) of Calverton; his daughter, Jill; sons, Philip, Jason and Lindsey; siblings, Stanley Wowak, Joyce Wowak, Richard Wowak and Susan Ganko; and six grandchildren.

A memorial will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Private interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Frank Raymond Brown

Frank Raymond Brown was born Sept. 12, 1927, the youngest of 13 children born to Robert Brown and Roselle Nash Brown. He was born on Bruno McCabe Farm on Sound Avenue in Riverhead and attended Riverhead Central School System where as a youth he played softball and ran track. 

Frank lost his father when he was 12 years of age and thus as a youth he held a series of jobs to help support his family. He graded and loaded potatoes on John Mazella Farm, unloaded feed grain from freight cars on Hollis Warner Duck Farm, cleaned bags for Seagal Bag Company and served as a bellhop at Henry Perkins Hotel. He worked at Long Island Produce, later Agway, for 45 years. At LIP/Agway he held many positions over the years: machine operator, truck driver- deliveryman, explosives technician, assistant foreman and employee representative. For a number of years he earned extra income providing janitorial services to Riverhead Police Department. In his spare time, in season, he worked on Richard Reeve farm. Upon retirement from Agway he developed his skill for landscaping into a full-time seasonal occupation.

Frank joined First Baptist Church of Riverhead at an early age. He sang on the first junior choir. For 63 years he served as an usher, beginning as a junior usher and retiring as marshall in Eastern Baptist Association. He served as the janitor and grounds keeper for 24 years at First Baptist Church.

In 1948 Frank married Dorothy Edley who he met at First Baptist Church. Three daughters, Shirley Diane, Deborah and Joan resulted from their union. Frank was a temperature and industrious man, committed to his work and most of all, to his family. 

He is predeceased by his wife, Dorothy; his brothers Isiah, Robert, Cainie, Harvey, Joseph and Wesley; and his sisters Virginia, Rosa, Mary, Lucille, Priscilla and Gracie.

He leaves to cherish; three daughters, Shirley Diane Brown and Joan Brown-Smith (Baltimore, Md.) and Deborah Dorothy Brown (Riverhead, N.Y.); two sister in laws, Mary Robinson(Eugene) (Riverhead, N.Y.) and Evelyn Edley (Gogchland, Va.); one brother-in-law, John Fox (Penfield, N.Y.); two grandsons Raymond Jackson (Tibithia) (Summerville, N.C.) and Jason T. Jackson (New York, N.Y.); great-grandchildren Nytaea Gholson, Brandon and Kiasia Jackson; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends Sunday, March 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. only at First Baptist Church of Riverhead, 1018 Northville Turnpike, Riverhead. Visitation will continue Monday, March 2, from 10 to 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church followed by a Funeral Service at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Center Moriches.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Tuthill Mangano Funeral Home, Riverhead, N.Y.

Lawrence B. Zebroski

Lawrence B. Zebroski of Flanders died Feb. 19 at Westhampton Care Center. He was 73.

He was born in Greenport May 30, 1946, to Stella (Laskiewicz) and Lawrence P. Zebroski.

Mr. Zebroski graduated from Westhampton High School and was a former teacher in Mattituck and past owner of Tire Craft and Tire Country in Riverhead.

Family said he enjoyed golf, NASCAR, fishing and horses.

Mr. Zebroski is survived by his wife, Barbara (nee Klein); his sons, Kevin of East Quogue and Keith of Tennessee; and four grandchildren.

Interment took place Feb. 24 at St. John’s Cemetery in Riverhead.

Barbara Kleczkowska

Barbara Kleczkowska of Riverhead died Feb. 26 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. She was 77.

She was born in Poland Sept. 13, 1942, to Stanislawa and Jozef Lukaszewski.
Ms. Kleczkowska was employed as a window decorator in Poland and as a housekeeper in the United States.

She was affiliated with Flanders Senior Center and enjoyed reading. Family said she had a strong will and was courageous in battling her health problems.

Ms. Kleczkowska is survived by relatives in Poland.

Arline M. Doppel

Arline M. Doppel, a Riverhead resident since 1987, died Feb. 28, 2020, at Peconic Bay Medical Center. She was 91.

She was born Nov. 8, 1928, to Clara Schweizer and William Wiess in Brooklyn, N.Y.

She married Harold E. Doppel Sept. 4, 1949. They were married for 70 ½ years.

Predeceased by her son, Kenneth, and her brother, William Wiess, Ms. Doppel is survived by her husband; her daughter, Irene (Tom) Winter; and grandchildren, Maureen (Devon) Bennett and Elizabeth Winter.

Mary Anna Fisher of Mattituck died at home Thursday, Feb. 27, 2020. She was 90 years old.

Mary was born Oct. 3, 1929, in the Bronx, N.Y., to Mary (Bolt) and Milton Smith.

She married the love of her life, Bernard Fisher, March 18, 1948, in New York City and together they had two children.

Mary and Bernard lived in Montclair, N.J., where she worked as a classified ad manager for the Montclair Times, finally making a home on the North Fork for the last 25 years.

Mary was a member of Mattituck Presbyterian Church and loved her home group. She was a “faithful prayer warrior,” an avid reader and always up on current events. She loved being a mom, but most of all her greatest joy was being Nana to granddaughter Danielle.

Predeceased by her siblings Milton “Buddy” Smith Jr. and Elizabeth Kate “Kay” Belford and, in 2006, by her husband, Bernard, Mary is survived by her children Caren Ann Heacock (Eric) of Mattituck and Gregg Charles Fisher (Shawn) of North Carolina; granddaughter Danielle Rebekah Fisher; sister Dorothy Grace Voltmer (Ralph) of New Jersey; and sister-in-law Eugenie Olsen (Ralph) of Wisconsin. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and steadfast friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 7, at 11:30 a.m. at Mattituck Presbyterian Church.

Glenn Barry Kantor, age 70, died in his home in Southampton, N.Y., Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2020, where he had been a resident for over 40 years.

Known across Long Island for his skilled musicianship with all woodwind instruments, Glenn was an outstanding clarinetist, having held the principal clarinet position with Sound Symphony Orchestra since 1985. Glenn started playing professionally at age 16 in the Catskill Mountains of New York and later played principal clarinet with both the 19th Army Band and the 319th Army Band. Glenn taught music in the public school system for over 20 years along with maintaining a private music studio in his home where he taught individual lessons. He also served as the rehearsal and music director for Big Band East, where he played the saxophone for over 20 years.

Glenn is preceded in death by both of his parents, Norman and Charlotte (nee Bauman) Kantor. He is survived by his daughter, Corinne; his grandson, Tamas; as well as his brother, Spencer (Roni) Kantor; former wife Stacy Kantor and former wife Janet Kantor, who he remained close with until the date of his death.

Visitation will take place Friday, March 13, 2020, from 4 to 8 p.m. and a funeral will take place Saturday, March 14, 2020, at 10 a.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home, 336 Marcy Ave., Riverhead. Burial to follow at Southampton Cemetery.
