Jennifer M. Burgess

Jennifer M. Burgess of East Setauket, formerly of Riverhead, died at Southside Hospital in Bayshore March 2. She was 36.

She was born June 30, 1983, to Annette Amato and Jay Burgess in Brookhaven.

Ms. Burgess attended Eastport High School.

Her family said she loved animals and going to the beach.

She was predeceased by her mother and her sister, Shannon Sypher. She is survived by her father; her brothers, Shane Sypher, Tyler Sypher-Burgess, Seth Daniell, Alex Daniell and Deven O’Rourke; and her grandmother, Arlene Burgess.

A memorial service will take place Saturday, March 14, from 2 to 5 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Lykara M. Atkins

Lykara M. Atkins of Riverhead died at East End Hospice Kanas Center for Hospice Care March 5. She was 29.

She was born April 12, 1990, to Edna Atkins and Ramon Overton in Brookhaven.

She is survived by her parents; her brothers, Alan Minter and Junius Atkins; her stepsister, Sha-Von Goode; her stepbrothers, Corey Hardy and Dwayne Riddick; and grandparents Dorothy Booker and Walter Overton.

Family said she enjoyed playing games.

Visitors will be received Saturday, March 14, at 10 a.m. at Galilee Church of God in Christ in Riverhead followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment at Riverhead Cemetery will follow.

Louis Tuleja

The Rev. Louis Tuleja, a longtime Wading River resident, passed away Feb. 23, 2020, while visiting family in Pasadena, Calif.

Louis was born in Somerville, Mass., to Frances (Wile) and Louis Tuleja Sr.

He earned his B.A. in classics from Harvard University and his master’s in divinity from Westminster Theological Seminary. After moving to Long Island, he earned an additional master’s in English from Stony Brook University.

While in seminary, Louis married his wife, Athena, and they became lifelong partners in ministry.

Louis served as pastor of Fourth Reformed Church in Roxborough, Pa., for four years, followed by 36 years as pastor of Wading River Congregational Church and 12 years as pastor of Middle Island Congregational Church. After his retirement, he enjoyed getting to know people from a variety of congregations on Long Island by serving as a guest preacher at churches from Orient to Nassau.

Throughout his ministry, Louis was known for his vibrant warmth and sense of humor, always hoping to reflect, by the gift of grace, the unconditional love of the God he so joyfully served.

Louis is survived by his loving wife, Athena, and his three children, Laurine, Cynthia and Stephen.

Visitation was held Friday, March 6, at Alexander-Rothwell Funeral Home in Wading River. The funeral service was held Saturday, March 7, at Middle Island Congregational Church/Middle Island United Church of Christ. Interment followed at Wading River Cemetery.

Mary Cornelia Theoharides

Mary Cornelia Theoharides of Southold, formerly of Garden City, N.Y., died peacefully March 5, 2020. She was 90 years old.

Known as “Neil” to family and friends, she was born April 20, 1929, to Dagmar Rubner and John Barclay in Kew Gardens, N.Y.

Neil graduated from Forest Hills High School in 1947 and attended Green Mountain College, where she earned a degree in art. She went on to be employed by Vogue magazine.

On June 26, 1952, Neil married the love of her life, Nicholas Theoharides. They were married for 65 years and raised four children.

Neil was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a lover of music and the arts and enjoyed gardening and decorating. She was an active member of the local chapter of the Embroiderers Guild of America. Her exquisite needlework and smocked pieces were gifted to her beloved family members and friends.

Predeceased by her husband, Nicholas, and her youngest son, Alexander, she is survived by her children: David (daughter-in-law Jane), Christopher (daughter-in-law Kathleen), Ellen (son-in-law Sean), and daughter-in-law Mary Kay. She was blessed with nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, March 21, at 2 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greenport.

Russell E. Jones

Russell E. Jones of Riverhead died March 9 at the East End Hospice Kanas Center for Hospice Care. He was 64.

He was born Oct. 5, 1955, to Ida Mae Jones and Curtis R. Liggon Jr. in Cartersville, Va.

Mr. Jones was employed at King Kullen and TruTech.

Family members said he enjoyed race cars, home cooking and family events and loved his grandchildren.

Mr. Jones is survived by his mother, of Virginia; his children, Siobhan Jones of Bellport, Serena Jones of Mastic and Ariel Jones of Moriches; his companion, Barbara Reddick of Riverhead; many siblings; and seven grandchildren.

Visitors will be received Monday, March 16, at 10 a.m. at Galilee Church of Christ in Riverhead, where a service will take place at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Riverhead Cemetery.

Constantinos ‘Gus’ Markotsis

Constantinos “Gus” Markotsis of Southold, N.Y., formerly of Hicksville, N.Y., passed away March 16, 2020.

He was the loving husband of Irene and devoted father to James (Sophia), Lea (Scott) and Gregory (Melissa). He will be missed by his amazing grandchildren, Matthew, Deana, Constantine, Peter, Stephen, Markella, Tess and James.

Gus was born in Chios, Greece, and emigrated to the U.S. when he was 10 years old.

He was a successful businessman and an excellent golfer.

Gus was loved by all who knew him for his sense of humor and kind heart.

Viewing will take place Wednesday, March 18, at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at Transfiguration of Christ Greek Orthodox Church, 1950 Breakwater Road, Mattituck, NY 11952.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at stjude.org.

Charles J. Au

Charles J. Au of Jamesport died at home March 12. He was 89.

He was born Jan. 19, 1931, to Anna (Carroll) and Charles Au in Brooklyn.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 and worked as a marble setter in Manhattan.

Mr. Au married Joan (née Renz) in 1958 in Queens.

Mr. Au was a member of Southold American Legion, Marion Council Knights of Columbus and Sacred Heart Parish. He enjoyed golf and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, who resides in Jamesport and his sister, Anne Fatone of Northport.

Visitors will be received Friday, March 20, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. A service will take place Saturday, March 21, at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck followed by interment at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Jane Crabtree Stark

Long-time Aquebogue resident Jane Crabtree Stark died March 14 after a short illness. She was 90.

Stark was the widow of Judge Thomas Stark, who predeceased her in 2014.
Stark was born in New York City and raised in Bronxville, N.Y.

A graduate of The Ursuline School and College of New Rochelle, she received a master of arts degree in English literature from State University of New York at Stony Brook. From 1981 to 1983, she was a lecturer at Suffolk County Community College.

After moving to Riverhead upon her marriage in 1954, Stark was involved in many local causes. She was active in the establishment of East End Arts in the years after its founding in 1972. In 1977, when Riverhead School District was operating under an austerity budget, she cofounded Riverhead Music Boosters to help support band, chorus and orchestra programs in the schools. She was a host and organizer for The Fresh Air Fund.

Early in her husband’s career, she was involved in his political campaigns for town and state offices.

A long-time member of North Fork Country Club, Stark was an avid golfer and bridge player. She enjoyed boating on Peconic Bay, gardening at her home in Aquebogue, the arts and attending theater, opera and ballet performances. Her family said she was known as a gracious and welcoming hostess and was enthusiastic about her grandchildren’s and nieces’ and nephews’ accomplishments.

Stark was a member of St. John’s parish where she served as a lector well into her 80s.

She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Stark Dugan of Chevy Chase, Md., and Ellen Gaynor Stark of New York City; sisters Judith Duffy of Bronxville, N.Y., and Claire Crabtree of Detroit, Mich.; and two grandchildren. Her sister Elizabeth Richard of Riverhead predeceased her.

A funeral Mass will be held Friday, March 20, at 1 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead is handling the arrangements, but the family is not holding a public wake in light of the current public health situation.

Robert DeWall

Robert DeWall of Riverhead died March 18, 2020, at his home. He was 98.

Born April 4, 1921, he was the son of George G. and Margaret Theresa (Mohan) DeWall of Woodlawn, N.D. He was married to his wife, Lois (Tyte), for 77 years.

Mr. DeWall served as a chief carpenter with the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 to 1947, and moved to Riverhead while being stationed with the Coast Guard during World War II. He later worked as an upholsterer.

He was a longtime member of Odd Fellows/Rebekah Lodge, the American Legion and the Methodist church.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, William (Rose) DeWall, Karen (the late Richard) Garritano and Peggy (Joseph) Warnock; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Saturday, March 21, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead, with a service immediately following at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Riverhead Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made in Walter’s name to a veterans’ memorial of the donor’s choice.

Lorraine E. Hulse

Lorraine E. Hulse of Riverhead died March 18, 2020, at Kanas Center for Hospice Care in Westhampton Beach. She was 91.

Ms. Hulse was born March 17, 1929, in Southampton to Charles and Gertrude (Foster) Parker. A high school graduate, she worked as a telephone operator at New York Telephone in Center Moriches.

She was a member of Veritas Rebekah Lodge No. 167, a volunteer at Suffolk County Historical Society and a member of Riverhead United Methodist Church.

Ms. Hulse was predeceased by her husband, Clifton Hulse Sr., in 2004, and her son, Clifton Hulse Jr. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Nancy T. Camerer, and two brothers.

Family said she loved all her caregivers and her fur “grandchild,” Miss Kitty. The family will receive visitors from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 22, at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead, with a prayer service at 4. Interment will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, March 23, at Riverhead Cemetery.

Zachee Michel III

Zachee Michel III of Riverhead died March 12, 2020, at his home. He was 45.

Born July 28, 1974, in Belgium, he was the son of Claudine (Devos) and Zachee Michell II.

He graduated in 1992 from Southampton High School and later from New York Institute of Technology. He worked in Flanders as a mechanic. He hobbies were computers and programming and he played the trumpet.

Predeceased by his parents, he is survived by his siblings, Mylene Michel-Guerra, Melchi Michel, Zierach Michel, Vasthi Michel-Feaster, Sheba Michel and Isch Michel; and his grandmother Julie Lambeau.

Cremation was private. Arrangements were in the care of McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Joseph Thomas ‘Sonny’ Miller

Joseph Thomas “Sonny” Miller of Peconic Landing in Greenport, formerly of Southold and North Babylon, N.Y., died Thursday, March 19, 2020. He was 93 years old.

Joe was born Nov. 23, 1926, in Queens, N.Y., to Josephine M. (Batterbee) and Joseph O. Miller. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving from 1944 to 1946 during World War II aboard the Pacific Theater aircraft carrier USS Wasp CV-18. He attained the rank of Seaman Second Class and was awarded with the Victory Medal, American Theater Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal 1 Star, European Theater Medal and Navy Unit Commendation.

On May 29, 1948, he married the love of his life, “My Carol” Charlson, at Church of St. Simon Stock in the Bronx, N.Y., and together they had four children.

Joe started his career as a route salesman with Dugan’s before working for Entenmann’s for 21 years. He was a life member of the North Babylon Fire Department and Rescue Squad and a member of Greenport Fire Department and Rescue Squad, acting as a first responder for both and serving a total of 65 years between the two. He was also a member of Southold American Legion Post 803 for 27 years, a member of St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport and a former member of Island’s End Golf Club and the Tamarack Hunting Club. He was an avid fisherman and also enjoyed hiking, hunting and anything outdoors. He was a generous, kind and giving person. He lived his life helping others. One of his favorite expressions and advice for any ailment or complaint was “Walk it off.”

Predeceased by his loving wife, Carol, he is survived by his children, Richard Miller (Veronica) of Midway, Utah, Christine Warburton (Thomas) of Venice, Fla., Kathy Jablkowski (Ted) of Waterford, Conn., and Elizabeth Miller of Venice, Fla.; his grandchildren, Jessica Gale (Dan), Jaclyn Whitney (Joseph), Joseph Miller (Debora), Michael Miller (Danielle), David Warburton (Jessica) and Andrew Warburton (Jessica); his great-grandchildren, Jenna, Jacob and Mateo; his sister, Marilyn Melville (the late Bill Sr.) of Greenport; his nephews, Bill Jr. and David (Yukie); niece Allison; grandnieces and grandnephews; and dear friend Doris Sherman.

Theodore O. Beebe

Lifelong Cutchogue resident Theodore O. Beebe died March 19, 2020. He was 89.

Theodore was born July 16, 1930, in Greenport to Hannah (Goodale) and Theodore O. Beebe. He served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954, attaining the rank of corporal. He retired as a police sergeant from Southold Town Police Department, where he protected the local community for 28 years. He was a member of the Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association, Suffolk County Retired Police Association, Cutchogue Fire Department, Pequash Club and North Fork United Methodist Church.

Predeceased by his siblings, William Beebe and Marjorie Swiatocha, Theodore is survived by his wife, Martha; children, Theodore Beebe (Luisa) of Cutchogue and Jane Rowehl (John) of Yorkhaven, PA; grandchildren, Theodore Beebe IV, Lisa Beebe, David Rowehl and Christine Pifer; and grandchildren, Miles Pifer and Neil Pifer.

Private family visiting hours will be held Wednesday, March 25, at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Graveside services will follow at Cutchogue Cemetery for family and close friends.

Richard Allen Johnson

Richard Allen Johnson of Mattituck, formerly of Lynbrook, died at home Feb. 29, 2020, at age 74.

He was born March 17, 1945, in Jamaica, Queens, to Elsie H. (Echtermeyer) and Herbert W. Johnson. He married Mary Rogers in 1968 in Queens, N.Y. Richard was a talented athlete all his life and enjoyed volleyball, tennis and golf. He will be deeply missed by friends, family and all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, and his brother Herbert.

A celebration of life will be held once things are back to normal. Time and place will be announced on Facebook.

Victoria A. Woolley

Victoria A. Woolley of Riverhead died at her home March 18, 2020. She was 90.

Born Nov. 30, 1929, in Brackettville, Texas, she was the daughter of Antonio and Victoria (Pinto) Alfaro and one of 13 siblings. She was married to Albert M. Woolley for 73 years. He preceded her in death Aug. 31, 2019.

Ms. Woolley had lived in Riverhead since 1972. She worked as an operating room secretary at Peconic Bay Medical Center, retiring after 26 years there. She was a volunteer for the hospital’s Ladies Auxiliary for more than 10 years. She also taught religion at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church. Victoria and Albert enjoyed dancing and belonged to a dance club.

She is survived by her children, Albert M. Woolley Jr. and Susan Woolley, Lynn and William Dunbar, Mark A. Woolley and Nancy Taylor-Woolley, Dr. Matthew L. and Debra Woolley and Lisa and Timothy Hubbard; grandchildren Albert M. III and Dawn Woolley, Michael and Michelle Woolley, Anne-Marie and Erik Eve, Jennifer and Scott Robinson, Brian Dunbar, Michelle and Alex Krynski, Brandon Dunbar, Elizabeth Woolley, Donovan Woolley, Bryce Woolley, Spencer Woolley, Jean-Claude and Nicole Hubbard, Meaghan and Erik Howard, Kyle and Taylor Hubbard, Paige Hubbard and Timothy A. Hubbard; and 17 great-grandchildren.

The family received visitors March 22 at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead. A private Mass took place March 23 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead, after which Victoria was reunited with Albert at Calverton National Cemetery.

Phyllis G. Dupree

On March 19, 2020, at approximately 3 p.m., Pastor Phyllis G. Dupree went home to Heaven. She was 87 years old.

She was born Nov. 11, 1932, in Jamaica, N.Y., to James A. Smith and Phyllis (Mendes) Smith. She was the widow of Pastor Frank C. Dupree, who predeceased her in December of 2018.

Pastor Phyllis was a wonderful person. She was a great mom, a loving grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Everyone she met was treated with kindness.

In her earlier married years, Phyllis owned and operated many businesses, including a fashion and charm school. After graduating with a degree in cosmetology from John Robert Powers in New York City, she went to work for many large department stores and eventually created her own line of cosmetics.

Pastor Phyllis Dupree’s life dramatically changed on New Year’s Eve in 1969, when she committed her life to Jesus while listening to Billy Graham on television.

Pastor Phyllis and her husband, Pastor Frank, founded Living Water Full Gospel Church in Riverhead, N.Y. Today Living Water Church is a thriving community of faith, now pastored by Phyllis’ son, Pastor George Dupree.

Phyllis was married to Frank for 70 years. She is survived by six children, Linda Saladon, Frank, Loren Caputo, George, Jeffrey and Stephen, and their spouses, Rick, Giovanna, John, Carolyn, Theresa and Erin; 25 grandchildren and their spouses; 42 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, no services will be held at this time.

Mary Amend Lundberg

Mary Amend Lundberg, born in the Bronx on March 11, 1931, died in Greenport on March 20, 2020, at age 89.

She was the daughter of Myles and Adelaide (Mulry) Amend of Crestwood and Cutchogue, N.Y. She was a graduate of the Ursuline School, the College of Mount Saint Vincent and Fordham University, where she earned a master’s in social work.

Mary wed Pierre “Pete” Lundberg in 1958, and they first lived in Riverhead and then in Aquebogue, before moving to Greenport in 2015. Mary enjoyed the bay, gardening, bridge, family and friends.

Mary and Pete, after raising their five children, became avid travelers, venturing to the USSR, Africa, Latin America and China, among other places.

After refreshing her MSW at Stony Brook University, Mary served as the executive director of the Riverhead Community Awareness Program until she retired in 2000.

Mary is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Pete; their five children and nine grandchildren: Loretta (Robert Tillman) and Alice of Brooklyn; Carol Cramer (Jim), Pete, Jamie and Jack of Piedmont, Calif.; Clare Marie of Peconic; Margaret Zimnoski (Mark) and Lainey of East Lyme, Conn.; and Arthur, Myles, Aurelia, Alessandra and Daria of Brecksville, Ohio. She is also survived by siblings Adelaide Amend of Cutchogue, Kathleen Collins of New York and Laurel, and Clare Amend of Washington, D.C. She was predeceased by her grandson Bobby Cramer.

Given the unusual times, services will be held at a later date. Arrangements were entrusted to the Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.

Frank J. Zaneski

Frank J. Zaneski of Mattituck died March 24, 2020, at San Simeon by the Sound. He was 100 years old.

He was born on June 19, 1919, in Cutchogue, N.Y., to Frank and Agnes (Gilewski) Zaneski.

As a young man, Frank worked as a bayman, a farmer and a truck driver, delivering potatoes throughout the northeast. He ultimately retired from his job as custodian with the Suffolk County Court System in Riverhead. He then spent many happy years working for the Norris family in Mattituck.

He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Mary (Wilcenski) Zaneski, in 2012 and siblings Helen Figurniak, Rose Ruhoy, Felix and Steven. Mr. Zaneski is survived by his son, Raymond (Christine), of Mattituck; grandchildren, Dan (Laurie) of Edison, N.J., Karen Whalen (Sean) of Commack, N.Y. and Robyn Shtadtlender (Michael) of Rego Park, N.Y.; five great-grandchildren, Madeline and Marissa Zaneski, Nicholas and Cassie Whalen and Hannah Shtadtlender; and brother Isadore Zaneski of Islip, N.Y.

The family wishes to thank all the devoted staff at San Simeon by the Sound for the excellent care Frank received while a patient there.

Due to the threat posed by the coronavirus pandemic, there will be no visiting hours or funeral Mass. Mr. Zaneski will be interred at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck is serving the family.

Brian Michael Wines, 42, of Winston-Salem, N.C., died March 16, 2020.

Brian was born and raised in Mattituck and graduated from Mattituck High School, where he played soccer and baseball and was a member of the National Honor Society. He was a graduate of the University of North Florida. He was a team leader for Essent Guaranty Mortgage Insurance Company.

Brian is survived by his wife, Amanda Swing Wines; three sons, Clayton Wines, Tyler Wines and Jackson Wines; his parents, Roger and Cheryl Wines of Jamesport; two brothers, Kevin Wines (Kim) of Mattituck and Keith Wines (April) of Thomasville, N.C.; three nephews, Anthony, Andrew and Tanner; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He will be remembered by friends and family for his generous spirit and playful nature. He was known around his office for his sharp wit and practical jokes. Other than playing with his boys, his favorite activity was camping on Cape Hatteras with his family.

A private memorial service was held March 20, 2020, at Davidson Funeral Home in Lexington, N.C.

In honor of his sons Tyler and Jackson, memorial gifts may be directed to the CURED Foundation, an organization dedicated to those suffering from eosinophilic disorders, at P.O. Box 32, Lincolnshire, IL 60069.
