Marie Davis

Marie Davis of Mattituck died at her home June 1, 2014. She was 75.

She was born March 28, 1939, in Astoria to Fred and Dorothy Siemerling. On July 9, 1960, she married Claude E. Davis, Jr. at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C Church in Mattituck.

Marie obtained her Bachelor of Science degree and was a teacher in the Mattituck-Cutchogue School District for 33 years. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Parish and a hospice volunteer.

Surviving is her husband, Claude E. Davis, Jr.; two children, Kim Ulmet and Mark Davis, both of Laurel; a brother, Arthur Siemerling of Mattituck and two grandchildren, Brady Scott Ulmet and Devyn Marie Ulmet.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, June 5, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, June 6 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church, officiated by Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Memorial donations in her name may be made to the Lustgarten Foundation.


William L. Sypher

Former Riverhead resident William L. Sypher of East Quogue died June 2 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. He was 78. 

He was born Feb. 28, 1936, in Riverhead to Helen Young (Harris) and Edgar L. Sypher. Mr. Sypher married Doris M. Bergen in 1956 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead.

Mr Sypher served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957, achieving the rank of private first class. He was employed by South Fork Asphalt and a member of Laborers’ International Union of North America Local 1298.

He is survived by his wife, Doris M. of East Quogue; his children, Mark E. of Quogue; Kevin of Ronkonkoma; Roxanna and Karen of Riverhead and Charlotte; his siblings, Roxanna Parker of Riverhead, Orville of South Jamesport and Ronald of Connecticut; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Friday, June 6, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a prayer service will take place at 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will take place Saturday, June 7, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Riverhead Cemetery.

JoAnne Miska

Lifelong North Fork resident JoAnne Miska of Mattituck died May 26, 2014 after a one-year illness.  She was 63. 

She was born July 17, 1950, in Greenport to Nellie (Burzynski) and Henry Volinski and was a graduate of Greenport High School.

For the past 40 years, she was a seafood manager for Mattituck Waldbaum’s.

She is survived by her son, Carl Miska of New Windsor, N.Y. and her daughter, Karen Kruk of Statesville, N.C.; her sisters, Joan Dixon of Jamesport and Sally Pankhurst of Southold; and five grandchildren, Tyler, Mike, Cassie, Justin and Adam. She was predeceased by her brothers, David Volinski and Kevin Volinski

Funeral services took place May 29 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greenport, officiated by the Rev. Garret Johnson.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home.

Former Riverhead resident Sherri Lee Heath of Rotterdam Junction, N.Y. died May 30. She was 47.

She was born July 1, 1966 to Sandra Haff and worked as a home health aide.

Ms. Heath is survived by her three daughters, Amanda Ferrante of Mastic Beach and Kerri Ferrante and Kristal Dewey, both of Flanders; her parents, Sandra and Gary Mott; her brothers, Robert and Gary Mott Jr.; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors June 7 from 2 to 4 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Florence E. Border

Lifelong Riverhead resident Florence E. Border died June 3 after a brief illness. She was 86.

She was born March 26, 1928, in Riverhead to Howard and Florence Case and attended Riverhead schools. Ms. Border worked for Suffolk Theatre and Riverhead movie theater and also worked for the Hazeltine Corporation, making circuit boards for the first moon landing space modules.

Family members said Ms. Border was known to all Riverhead residents as “The lady from The Hero Inn” where she made the town’s best “Big H’s.”

Ms. Border was predeceased by her son Robert “Nick” Border and is survived by her daughters, June (Border) Scott, Carol Ann Ferreira and GeorgeAnn (Schneider) Bowman; her son John Schneider; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was also predeceased by her brothers, William and Albert Case.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, June 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A graveside service will take place Friday, June 6, at 10 a.m. at Riverhead Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Eric Grey.

Joanne Cooper Bochan

Former Mattituck resident Joanne Cooper Bochan of Boca Raton, Fla., passed away June 4, 2014, at Boca Raton Community Hospital. She was 54.

Ms. Bochan is survived by her husband of 29 years, former Mattituck resident Henry Bochan; her mother, Julie Cooper; her sister, Judy Doroski; her brother, James Cooper; and her niece, Julie.

A memorial service was held June 8 at Glick Family Funeral Home in Boca Raton.

Jeanne C. Tuthill

Jeanne C. Tuthill of Mattituck died on June 8, 2014. She was 96 years old. 

She was born in New Suffolk March 15, 1918, to Harry B. and Marjorie ( Fanning) Carter. Raised in Rockville Centre, Garden City and New Suffolk, she was trained as a nurse and worked at the former Central Suffolk Hospital in Riverhead.

Jeanne enjoyed quilting and traveling, gardening and the “farm life.” For many years, she ran the raspberry stand on Route 48 in Mattituck and in earlier years raised turkeys.

She had been a member of Cutchogue Presbyterian Church and was more recently associated with Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Mattituck.

Predeceased by her husband, John Case Tuthill in 2013 and her son, Edward Tuthill in 1972; she is survived by her friends David and Sherry Steele and their family of Mattituck and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends and family will receive visitors Wednesday, June 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Graveside services and interment will take place Thursday, June 12, at 10 a.m. at Cutchogue Cemetery, where the Rev. Patrick McNamara of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to Mattituck Fire Department Rescue Squad or Mattituck Historical Society.

Florence Abrams

Florence Abrams of Riverhead died June 7. She was 89. 

She was born in Brooklyn and moved from Island Park to Riverhead around 1960 after her husband, Irwin got his first teaching job as a Riverhead High School english teacher. She retired in the 1970s after being a secretary for Riverhead Town Board of Zoning Appeals and a clerk in the town Supervisor’s office.

Following retirement from the town, Ms. Abrams started as a volunteer with Riverhead Free Library, assisting part-time in the clerical department and scheduling the Reading is Fundamental and English as a Second Language programs. She retired from Riverhead Free Library in late 1990s.

Ms. Abrams was also very active with Temple Israel of Riverhead.

Predeceased by her husband, she is survived by her son, Harley, of Riverhead and Roslyn Heights and her daughter, past Colorodo State Senator Evanne “Evie” Hudak of Denver, Colo; and one granddaughter.

Funeral services took place June 9 at Temple Israel Riverhead and the interment was in a small cemetery, Agoodis Achim, located in East Setauket and owned by the synagogue.

Arrangements were handled by I.J.Morris in Dix Hills.


Norma L. Hinsch

Norma L. Hinsch, of Laurel and Plainview, died June 16 at Good Shepherd Hospice in Port Jefferson. She was 89. 

She was born March 17, 1925, in Manhattan to John and Elsa Bunke. Ms. Hinsch was a homemaker, who family members said enjoyed studying nutrition, Bible study and leading prayer groups. She was a member of Order of St. Luke and Valparaiso Guild.

Ms. Hinsch was predeceased by her husband, the Rev. John C. Hinsch in 1998 and is survived by her children, John (Judy) of Plainview, James (Lisa) of Laurel, Paul (Krista) of Bethpage, Peter (Kathy) of Southold, Lois (David) Birner of Grafton, Wis. and Priscilla of Fairview Park, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, June 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. and will continue Thursday, June 19, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. A funeral service will take place Saturday, June 21, at 10:30 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Plainview. Interment will take place at St. Margaret’s Cemetery in Plainview.

Memorial donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in Rocky Point.

 

Edward J. Schumpf Jr.

Longtime Riverhead resident Edward J. Schumpf Jr. died June 11 of cancer. He was 70. 

He was born Aug. 22, 1943, in Westhampton Beach to Alice and Edward Schumpf Sr. Ms. Schumpf served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968 and worked for Grumman Aerospace for 18 years. He also worked for Suffolk County Community College.

Family members said Mr. Schumpf enjoyed gardening, traveling and classic cars.

He was predeceased by his siblings Joe, George, Ann, Edwina, and Arthur and is survived by his wife Irene (née Fialkowski) Schumpf; his daughters, Barbara Roberts and Christina Atkinson and their spouses; his brother John (Marie) Schumpf; his sister, Dorothy; his mother-in-law, Irene Fialkowski; his sister-in-law, Barbara Schumpf and four grandchildren.

The family received visitors June 16 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Cremation was private.

Natalie Wivczar

Natalie Wivczar of Riverhead died her home June 18. She was 75. 

She was born Aug, 3, 1938, in Wading River to Helen (Shwonik) and Harry Wivczar. A quadriplegic for 58 years after contracting polio, Ms. Wivczar spent most of her time in an iron lung. Family members said her pastimes were praying and giving thanks to God, and that Ms. Wivczar often said “I’m lying down on the outside, but often dancing on the inside and the joy of the Lord is my strength.”

Ms. Wivczar is survived by her brother, Ron Shepherd of Cutchogue, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two siblings.

The family will receive visitors Saturday, June 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday, June 22, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral mass will take place Monday June 23, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Riverhead. Burial will take place at the church cemetery.

Bertha Harris

Longtime Riverhead resident Bertha Harris, formerly of Southold, died June 22. She was 88. 

TMs. Harris was born Dec. 18, 1925, in Southold to Francis (Dzerzynsky) and John Sledjeski and graduated from Mattituck High School in 1944. She married Stanley Harris April 11, 1948.

Ms. Harris was the publicist and past president for the Polish Town Civic Association.

She was predeceased by her husband in 2006 and is survived by her sister, Irene Garner of Greenport; her brother, Edward Sledjeski of Florida; her son James (Jean) Harris of Riverhead; her son Michael (Jo-Ann) Harris of Patchogue; and her two grandchildren, Jaime Ness of Seven Valleys, Pa. and James Harris Jr. of Riverhead.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, June 25, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place Thursday, June 26, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Former Matittuck resident Laurie E. Graeb-Lechner of Holtsville died June 21 in Port Jefferson. She was 57.

TShe was born Dec. 7, 1956, in Mineola to Robert and Phylis Graeb and graduated from Mattituck High School in 1975. She married Kenneth C. Lechner April 18, 2004, in Mattituck.

Ms. Graeb-Lechner worked as a secretary for Southampton Hospital. She was a member of East End Lions and Mattituck Presbyterian Church. Family members said she loved spending time with her grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She also loved traveling and cruising, reading, shopping and stock car racing.

She was predeceased by her parents and is survived by her husband, Kenneth of Holtsville; her stepchildren, Danielle (Joshua) and Kenneth Jr.; her brothers, John (Diane) and Thomas (Diane); her sister, Pamela (Gene) Doroski; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Carmella and David Lechner; her grandchildren, Nicholas, Jake and Isabella Mannick; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors Friday, June 27, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. A funeral service will take place Saturday, June 28, at 11 a.m. at Mattituck Presbyterian Church. Cremation will be private.

Elizabeth M. Simcik

Elizabeth M. “Betty” Simcik of Southold died Saturday, June 21, 2014. She was 91.

She was born Nov. 9, 1922, in Baiting Hollow to John and Mary (Columbus) Brezinski and was a graduate of the class of 1941 from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in Port Jefferson.

Betty was a devoted homemaker and a health care provider and involved with the Mind Alert program at Katinka House in Mattituck, until the age of 85.

In her free time, she enjoyed cooking, baking and decorating cakes, embroidery and gardening. She was also an avid reader and will be remembered for skill in letter writing.

Predeceased by her husband, John B. Simcik in 1991 and by a granddaughter Jennifer Simcik in 1983, she leaves her children, Maryann (Robert) Boger of Southold, Rosemarie (Bernard) Ryba of Old Brookville and John R. (Robin) Simcik of East Marion; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Herbert Brezinski and Joseph Brezinski.

The family will receive visitors, Tuesday, June 24, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, June 25, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue by Father Stan Wadowski. Interment will take place at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Walter Sanders

Walter “Champ” Sanders of Riverhead died June 11. He was 90. 

Mr. Sanders was born June 20, 1923, in Eastman, Ga. to Ellen and Benjamin Swint and later moved to Miami, Fla. As a young man, he left home to work as a handyman for Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Mr. Sanders later moved to Philadelphia, Pa. to live with relatives before joining the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged in 1942 and moved to Riverhead.

While living in Riverhead, Mr. Sanders worked for Mayflower Moving Company. He traveled throughout the country and was later promoted to supervisor. He married Lucille Hayes in 1963.

Family members said Mr. Sanders loved playing golf, reading, holding political debates, jazz and weight lifting, which did until he was 90.

Mr. Sanders was predeceased by his wife in 2007 and by his stepdaughter, Delores Greene and is survived by his daughter, Ellen Sanders-Coles; his stepmother, Naomi Swint; his stepsister, Bernice Swint; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives.

The family received visitors June 20 at Galilee Church of God in Christ in Riverhead. Interment took place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by Seay Memorial Chapel in Riverhead.


Andrew Arthur Galasso

Andrew Arthur Galasso of Riverhead died June 10. He was 74. 

Mr. Galsso is survived by his wife, Patricia; his children, Andrew, Arthur, Adam, Deborah, Maureen, Melissa and Hope; and his siblings, Frances, Larry, Charles and Theodore.

The family received visitors June 12 at Moloney’s Funeral Home in Port Jefferson. A funeral Mass took place June 13 at St. Francis Cabrini R.C. Church in Coram. Interment took place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram.

Judy C. Young

Judy C. Young of Aquebogue died June 23 at her home. She was 75.  

She was born Dec. 5, 1938, in Greenport to Dorothy (Cooper) and Herbert Young. She attended Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fla., where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree.

Ms. Young was a longtime volunteer for Peconic Bay Medical Center, serving over 15,000 hours. She was also involved in many beautification projects in Riverhead, including founding Riverhead Litter Patrol with Jesse Goodale, maintaining the traffic circles in Riverhead and Riverside, trimming the bushes at Suffolk County Historical Society and painting the fence for Aquebogue Cemetery. Her cousin Bruce Cooper said Ms. Young was a “wonderful person who gave a lot to her community.”

Ms. Young is survived by many cousins and friends.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, June 25, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at the funeral home Thursday, June 26 at 10 a.m., officiated by Pastor Jane Wright. Burial will take place at Aquebogue Cemetery.

Walter A. Delaney

Walter A. Delaney of Southold died June 22, 2014, at the age of 89. 

Mr. Delaney was born in the Bronx, New York in 1925 to the late Walter and Adele Delaney. After graduating from Stuyvesant High School, he served with the U.S. Navy, achieving the rank of second lieutenant during World War II. He then attended and graduated from Brown University. Mr. Delaney was an officer of the New York City Police Department for over 30 years, retiring in 1986 at the rank of captain.

He married Margaret Major in 1951. Mr. and Mrs. Delaney lived and raised their family in North Babylon before retiring to Southold. They were married for 60 years.

Upon retirement, Mr. Delaney enjoyed boating, fishing, and golfing with his children and grandchildren, as well as travelling with his wife. He will always be remembered as a loyal, devoted, and loving father and husband. Walter will be laid to rest with his beloved wife, Margaret.

He is survived by sons, Richard of New York City, Kevin of Darien, Conn., Brian of Weston, Conn., Walter of Garden City and Christopher of Clarendon Hills, Ill.; his daughter, Patricia Brown of Fairfield, Conn.; and 15 grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, June 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Monday, June 30, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Former Riverhead resident Brian W. Reynolds of Miller Place died June 8 at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson. He was 49. 

He was born in Riverhead to Jeanne (Stelzer) and William Reynolds and was a construction worker with Deon Construction in Miller Place.

Mr. Reynolds is survived by his wife, Simone; his parents; and his brothers, Mark, of Mattituck, Erick, of Riverhead, Shawn, of Rocky Point and Troy, of Colorado.

The family will receive visitors Monday, June 30, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place Tuesday, July 1, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, officiated by the Rev. Clinton Hamm. Interment will take place at Riverhead Cemetery.

Rose Lagattolla of Riverhead died June 26 at her home. She was 91. 

She was born Oct. 29, 1922, in Bronx, N.Y. to Francesca (Albanese) and Valentino Siano and was a homemaker.

Ms. Lagattolla was predeceased by her husband, James in 2005 and is survived by her sons, James of Florida, and Richard and Michael of Holbrook; her daughter, Carol Sanchez of Sag Harbor; six grandchildren  and one great-grandchild.

The family received visitors June 28 and 29 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service took place June 30 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead, officiated by Father Larry Duncklee. Interment took place at Calverton National Cemetery.
