Catherine Jean Frankman

Catherine Jean Frankman of Riverhead died June 28 at her home. She was 86. 

She was born March 3, 1928, in Brooklyn to Helen (Fitzpatrick) and Charles Huelster and was a homemaker.

Ms. Frankman was predeceased by her husband, Frank, and her son Stephen in 1990. She is survived by her sons Kenneth, of Remsenburg, Gerard, of Seatle, Wash., and James, of Riverhead; her daughter, Nancy, of Eastport and two grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, July 1, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place Wednesday, July 2, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Calverton National Cemetery.

The family is accepting flowers at the funeral home, and also suggests that donations be made to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978-7048.

Leendert “Lane” G. Proper of Riverhead died June 28 at Riverhead Care Center. He was 84. 

Leendert G. “Lane” Proper of Riverhead died June 28 at Riverhead Care Center. He was 84.

He was born May 7, 1930, in Vlaardingen, Netherlands, to Katherin VanBeek and Gabriel Proper. Mr. Proper owned Continental Bamboo Restaurant in Westhampton.

Family members said he was a New York Yankees and Mets fan and also enjoyed stamp collecting.

Predeceased by his wife, Edwina, known as Mickey, on Sept. 2, 2011, Mr. Proper is survived by his son, Michael, of Harrison, N.Y.; his daughter, Linda Jordan of New Hampshire; six stepchildren, Donna DeLuccia, William Malone, James Malone, Deborah Malone, Michael Malone and Raymond Malone; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place Friday, July 11, at 1 p.m. at St. Isidore R.C. Cemetery in Riverhead.

Sharon J. Sobering

Sharon J. Sobering of Reston Va. died June 30. She was 67.

She was born Dec. 25, 1946, in Greeport to Josephine (Wowak) and John Dolan. Most recently, she worked as a clerk at Giant Pharmacy.

Ms. Sobering was predeceased by her husband, Matthew and is survived by her daughter, Debbie DiSciossia of Manorville; her son, T.J. Jackowski of Virginia; her brother, Danny Dolan of Maine; her sisters, Kathy Szymborski of East Marion and Maureen Dailey of Arkansas; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors today, Thursday, July 3, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead, with a funeral service being held at 8 p.m. Cremation was private.

Ronald C. Tweedie of Riverhead died July 4 at Stony Brook University Hospital. He was 77.

Mr. Tweedie was born Sept. 22, 1936, in Brooklyn to Florence (Lockhart) and John Tweedie and was a former resident of Deer Park and Oceanside. He worked as a car salesman for Fern Motors.

Family and friends will receive visitors Wednesday, July 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place Thursday, July 10, at at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Locust Valley Cemetery.

Virginia Dunston

Former Riverhead resident Virginia Dunston of North Carolina died July 6. She was 93.

She was born May 25, 1921, in North Carolina to Annie (Haliburton) and Hanson Robenson. Ms. Dunston worked as a housecleaner. Family members said she enjoyed writing.

Ms. Dunston was predeceased by her husband, Marshall in 1960 and by her son, Marshall. She is survived by her children, Walter, Virgia Faison, Hanson, and Mali Johnson; four grandchildren; and eight great-
grandchildren.

A graveside service will take place Friday, July 11, at 1 p.m. at Riverhead Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

William Mahr Donovan

William Mahr Donovan of Riverhead died July 3 at The Hampton Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing. He was 91.

He was born Nov. 2, 1922, in Queens to Janet (née Mark) and Thomas Donovan. He served in the U.S. Navy and worked as a building manager for Douglas Elliman.

Mr. Donovan was predeceased by his wife, Dena (née Perks) Donovan in 2008 and is survived by his son, William, of Montana and his daughter, Desha Clements of Astoria.

A service will take place Friday, July 18, at 11 a.m. at Calverton National Cemetery, where Mr. Donovan will be interred.

Arrangements were handled by Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Dorothy Mae Haberman

Dorothy Mae “Dottie” Haberman of Riverhead passed away at her home July 4, 2014 at 85 years of age.
The daughter of John W. and Ruth Ashmore, Dorothy was born in Belfast, Maine, Aug. 18, 1928, and shortly after, the family moved to Riverhead, which is where Dottie grew up.

Dottie worked as a school bus driver for Riverhead Central School district for more than 22 years, retiring in 1990.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Walter; her daughters, Sherry Johnson of Manorville and Dale Stubbings of New Bern, N.C.; five grandchildren, Scott Stubbings of Winterville, N.C., Erin Stubbings White of Dover, N.C., Bryan Johnson of Rocky Point, Jason Johnson of Riverhead, and Carly Johnson in Huntington; her brother, John Ashmore of Rocky Point and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors for a memorial service Friday, July 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Ann Marie Borghese

Ann Marie Borghese of Cutchogue died June 20, 2014 in Santa Fe, N.M. She was 56.

She was born Jan. 27, 1958, to Jean (née Haywood) and John Halloran and earned a bachelor of arts degree in French from the University of Delaware. She also studied at the Sorbonne in Paris.

In 1985, she married Marco Borghese. She owned a jewelry salon in Philadelphia before moving to the North Fork in 1999 where she became the owner of Castello di Borghese Vineyards. Ann Marie created a platform for Long Island wines at farmer’s markets and was immensely involved in the public relations and event planning of the vineyard. She met the demands of running a business with sophistication and savvy.

Ann Marie will be remembered as an ardent supporter of Our Lady of Mercy School in Cutchogue and for her love of charities, France, dogs, her family and honey bees. She was also an advocate and supporter of the arts.

At the time of her death, Ann Marie was survived by her husband Marco. He later died on June 30, 2014 in a motor vehicle accident in Wading River. Also left to mourn her passing are her children, Allegra and Giovanni; her step-son Fernando of Pennsylvania.; a granddaughter Sofia of Pennsylvania; her mother Jean of Deleware. and brothers Steven of Alaska and Andrew and Robert both of Deleware. She was predeceased by her father John and brother Philip.

A private green burial was held at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico on June 23, 2014.

A memorial mass will be held at Our Lady of Ostrabrama Roman Catholic Church in Cutchogue in August at a date and time to be announced.

Those wishing to remember Ann Marie in a special way can make a contribution to Our Lady of Mercy School in Cutchogue or the Fresh Air Fund of New York City.

A special thank you is extended to the Hospice of New Mexico for making Ann Marie’s end of life experience as beautiful and comfortable as possible.

Marco Borghese

Marco Borghese of Cutchogue died June 30, 2014 at Peconic Bay Medical Center from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident in Wading River. He was 70. He was born Aug. 8, 1943, to Adrianna (née Colombo) and Giovanni Borghese.

Educated at the University of Rome, he received his bachelor of arts degree in Engineering.

Upon coming to America, he first worked for Fiat then in the textile industry in the Orient, Manhattan and Philadelphia.

Previously married to Dorothy Borghese; he married Ann Marie Borghese in 1985. Marco and Ann Marie Borghese bought the North Fork’s first vineyard in 1999 from the pioneering Hargrave family, which established it in 1973. They named it Castello di Borghese.

Marco enjoyed sailing, skiing, and the charm of farm life. He was a skilled chef and hosted many dinners where he could share his culinary talents.

Predeceased by his wife Ann Marie Borghese on June 20; he leaves his children, Allegra and Giovanni of New York and Fernando of Pennsylvania; a granddaughter, Sofia of Pennsylvania; a sister, Cristina; a brother, Alessandro; a brother-in-law, Fabrizio; a sister-in-law, Helene; a nephew, Emanuele and a grandniece, Micol all of Rome Italy.

A private family service was held July 3, 2014 at Castello di Borghese with Father Stan Wadowski officiating. Following cremation, his ashes will be dispersed in the Chesapeake Bay.

A memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue in August at a date and time to be announced. Services were arranged by DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.

Irene Joyce Diaz

Irene Joyce Diaz of Greenport passed away at the age of 84 after a long illness. A homemaker, she spent her life entertaining the neighborhood kids and taking care of her cats.  

She is predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Joseph N. Diaz, a son Joseph Jr, and two brothers, Clarence and Leroy Powell. Ms. Diaz is survived by her brother, Richard Powell and sister, Davin Sable, a daughter, Maria Kleppinger of Telford, Pa., a son John A. “Tony” Diaz of Howes Cave, NY, four granddaughters; E. Tobie DelGaudio, Mary Joyce “Liz” Ricketts, Erica Steindle and Karina Hayes, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews among them, Richard H. Diaz who grew up in her home.

The family received visitors at Defriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, with services and interment at Sterling Cemetery in Greenport.

The family requests that donations may be made in Ms. Diaz’s  name to either Southold Animal Shelter or Spay, Alter, Vaccinate Every Stray (S.A.V.E.S.)

A funeral service will take place Monday, July 21, 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Cutchogue, where homegoing services, officiated by the Rev. Cornelius Fulford, will begin at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at Laurel Cemetery.

Arrangements were in care of DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.

Kevin Montgomery of Southold died at his home July 12, 2014. He was 71.

He was born in Jamaica, N.Y. Dec. 30, 1942, to Robert H. and Eileen (née McKie) Montgomery.

Surviving are his wife, Kathleen D. Montgomery; two children, Maura and Brendan; a brother, Lewis and two grandchildren, Paul and Lucas.

The family will receive visitors Friday, July 18, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, July 19, at noon at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s R.C. Cemetery.

Memorial donations to East End Hospice, American Lung Association or World Vision would be appreciated.

Elthea S. Cohen

Elthea S. Cohen of Southold died at her home July 13, 2014. She was 94.

She was born in Brooklyn May 30, 1920, to Edward and Adrian (née Godfrey) Riker.

Thirty-two years ago, she and her husband, Eugene moved here from New Hyde Park. They spent their winters in Florida.

Elthea was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Griswold Terry Glover Post #802 of the American Legion in Southold and was a watercolor artist.

In earlier years, she was active in the Boy Scouts as a den mother and then became an instructor to those wishing to become den mothers. She was the recipient of the Silver Fawn Award, because of her outstanding contributions to scouting.

Predeceased by her husband, Eugene A. Cohen on March 28, 2005; she is survived by two sons, Doug (Fran) of Rotterdam, N.Y. and Duane (Lynn) of Mt. Sinai; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was also predeceased by a granddaughter, April.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 15 from 7 to 9 P.M. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Interment will take place Wednesday, July 16 at 10 a.m. at Calverton National Cemetery, with the procession leaving the funeral home at 9 a.m.

Barbara Jean Martin of Southold died July 8 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. She was 70.

She was born in Greenport July 14, 1943, to Stanley and Helen Case and was a graduate of Southold High School.

A life-long resident, she was a member of the Southold United Methodist Church and was a well-liked and talented seamstress.

She is survived by two daughters, Kimberlie Jobes of Glens Falls, N.Y. and Diane McGunningle of Southold; three siblings, Ernie Case of Cutchogue, Nancy Marschean of Cutchogue and Margie Brem of Farmingdale; and five grandchildren, Craig Jobes, Zachary Jobes and Caylie Jobes, Kenny McGunningle and Matthew McGunnigle. She was predeceased by a brother, Soc Case.

The family received visitors July 11 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The funeral service took place July 12 at Cutchogue United Methodist Church. Interment took place at Cutchogue Cemetery.

Kurt James Wahl of Cutchogue died July 6, 2014. He was 57.

He was born to Larry and Irene Wahl at Ladd Air Force Base Hospital in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Kurt graduated from Southold High School in 1975 and served in the U.S. Air Force and Border Patrol. He was employed by Robin’s Island.

Kurt is survived by his mother, Irene Wahl, his brothers Eric and Marc (Laura), three nephews and a niece. He was predeceased by his father, Larry. He is also survived by his fiancée, Carol Worth, and her son, Scott Worth.

DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes assisted the family at this very difficult time. A private memorial

Jean S. Young of Riverhead died July 15 at St. Catherine of Sienna Hospital in Smithtown. She was 86.

Ms. Young was born Dec. 13, 1927, in Utica, N.Y., to Marion (Prindle) and John Strobel. She worked as a teacher for the Quogue School District.

Predeceased by her husband, Richard, in 1996, her son Gary in 2005 and her son Dale in 2006, Ms. Young is survived by four sons: Kim of Maine; Leigh of Riverhead; Glenn of Pennsylvania and Terry of Wisconsin; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Friday, July 18, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place Saturday, July 19, at Old Steeple Community Church in Aquebogue, at a time to be determined. Interment will take place at Aquebogue Cemetery.
