Barry Cohen

Barry Cohen of Southold died in Southampton, Jan. 3, 2015. He was 84. 

He was born in the Bronx, Nov. 20, 1930, to Anna (née Bodatsky) and Harry Cohen and later served in the U.S. Navy.

Formerly of Island Park and Rockville Centre, Barry had been a repairman for Metered Appliance in Woodside.

In his free time, he enjoyed Jigsaw and crossword puzzles.

He is survived by his daughters Chery (Eddie) Kuhn of Copiague, Elizabeth Cohen of Port Jefferson Station, Gloria (Bill) Cagney of Bayville and Terri (Buddy) Adler of Southold; a sister Barbara Brody of Ontario, Canada; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Florence.

Graveside services will be held Monday, Jan. 5, at 10:45 a.m. at Calverton National Cemetery, where members of the U.S. Navy will render military honors.

Florence Griffith Schoenberg

Florence Griffith Schoenberg passed away peacefully Dec. 31 at her Baiting Hollow home. She was 86. 

Born Nov. 25, 1928, in Owosso, Mich. to Roy and Alice Griffith, she spent most of her childhood in Woodstown, N.J. She attended Woodstown High School, participating in team sports and musical organizations and graduated as valedictorian. Florence attended New Jersey College for Women (Rutgers), where she majored in Spanish and minored in music. She sang in the college’s Vorhees Chapel Choir, performing under Eric Leinsdorf and Leonard Bernstein. Florence later received her master’s degree in education from Hofstra University.

After briefly living in Glens Falls, N.Y., Florence and her family moved to Malverne, N.Y., where they lived for many years before moving to Baiting Hollow in 2000. She taught Spanish at Malverne High School for 27 years, taking many students to Spain every year. She also taught advanced college courses at Malverne High School, which were sponsored by Adelphi University.

While living in Baiting Hollow, Florence sang in the Old Steeple Community Church choir in Aquebogue. Her husband, George, was the church interim organist for seven years.

In addition to her husband of 64 years; Florence is survived by her daughter, Christine, of New York City; her son, Paul, of Denver; and her brother, Leroy, of Woodstown.

The family received visitors Jan. 5 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service was held Jan. 6 at Old Steeple Community Church. Interment took place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Frederick Smith

Frederick Smith of Calverton, son of Allen Sr. and Victoria (Townes) Smith was born Feb. 8, 1939, and departed this life Dec. 30 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead after a brief illness. He was 75. 

He was born in Calverton and graduated from Riverhead High School in 1958.

Frederick worked his entire life. In his early years he was employed at Treat Factory in Calverton. After the business closed, he went on to work for Bachman Company, until an opportunity arose and he took a position with Riverhead Town. He retired in 2011. Family members said while at work, Frederick could always be found by following his whistle.

Frederick was an avid and lifelong New York Mets, Knicks and Giants fan. Family members said that, like his mother, he was always watching a 24-hour news television station. Sports and politics were his two most popular conversation topics.

Frederick was predeceased by his older brother, Allen Jr. He leaves to mourn his daughters, Pamela (Andrew) Langhorne and Frederica (Rodney) Rollins, both of Riverhead; three grandchildren, Dana and Rodney Rollins, and Maurice Langhorne, all of Riverhead; his aunt, Almeade Francis of Bay Shore; his sister-in-law, Leenell Smith of Riverhead; his cousins, Gerald Townes of Long Island and Walter Brown and Christine Blocker, both of Virginia; his nephews, Anthony and Michael, of Riverhead, and Ronald and Barry, of Florida; his nieces, Angela, of Florida, Anna, of Riverhead, and Renee, of North Carolina; and a host of family and friends.

The family received visitors Jan. 5 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home for visitation and a funeral service, officiated by Pastor A. Charles McElroy. Interment was at Riverhead Cemetery.

David H. Milligan

David H. Milligan of Riverhead died at his home Dec. 26 after a long illness. He was 66.

He was born Dec. 6, 1948, in Greenport to Caroline (Kenney) and Arthur Milligan. He married Cindy Harris May 19, 2001.

Mr. Milligan worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Riverhead. Family members said he was a car buff.

Predeceased by his brothers, William and Arthur Jr., he is survived by his wife and his siblings, Vivian Adams of Bossier, La., Joan Haught of Valparaiso, Fla., Caroline McCartin of Calverton, Ross of Aquebogue, Robert of Harpursville, N.Y., W. Thomas of Irving, Texas, and Janine Benedict of East Moriches.

The family received visitors Dec. 30 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A memorial service was held Dec. 31 at the funeral home. Interment took place at St. Isidore R.C. Cemetery in Riverhead.

 

 

Charles Trinowski Sr.

Former Riverhead resident Charles Edward “Charlie” Trinowski Sr. of Franklin, N.C. died Dec. 23 at Veterans Hospital in Asheville, N.C. after a long battle with cancer. He was 82. 

He was born in Riverhead, moved to Florida in 1955 and settled in Franklin after a long career as a master electrician.

Mr. Trinowski is survived by his wife, Nancy; his son Steven, his daughter Barbara Jean Freed; two stepsons, John and David Crounthamel; a stepdaughter Carol Smith; 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and his sister, Alice Zaleski. He was predeceased by his daughter Deborah Gonzalez; his son Charles Trinowski Jr. and his stepdaughter Connie Lee Cherrette.

A private memorial is planned. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, Charles George Veterans Administration Medical Center in Asheville, N.C.

Edward E. Crohan Sr.

Edward E. Crohan Sr. of Flanders died Jan. 5. He was 78. 

He was born Feb. 1, 1936, and was the oldest son of Ida and Edward F. Crohan.

Known as “Sonny” to friends and family, Ed was a renowned horseman, avid horseback rider and horse trainer on the East End. He was known for his bird carvings and panting. Ed enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating.

Ed served in the U.S. Army as a reservist, was a past member of Flanders Fire Department and a member of Riverhead Masonic Lodge. He retired after working for New York Telephone Company.

Predeceased by his wife of over 50 years, Frances (Martin) Crohan; his granddaughter, Stephanie Tooker and brother, David W. Crohan; Ed is survived by his children, Cynthia Tooker, Cheryl Simons, Lori Visone, Edward Jr. and Dawn Dawson; his grandchildren, Mark, Samantha, Nicole, Tyler, Matthew, Liam and Quinn; and his great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Ryan.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, Jan. 7, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home Thursday, Jan. 8, at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. funeral service.

Regina Denely

Regina Denely of Riverhead died Jan. 6 at Hamptons Center for Rehabilitation in Southampton. She was 95. 

She was born July 8, 1919, in Oyster Bay to Marguerite (Himes) and Thomas Denely.

Family members said she was a homemaker who had volunteered as a Pink Lady at Central Suffolk Hospital in Riverhead (now Peconic Bay Medical Center).

Ms. Denely is survived by two sons, Peter and David Wulforst of Calverton; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Jan. 9, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A Mass of Christian burial will take place the same day at 11 a.m. at St. Isidore R.C. Church, also in Riverhead. Burial will take place at the church cemetery.

Richard F. Dillon

Former Aquebogue resident Richard F. Dillon of Utah died suddenly Jan. 8 in Virginia. He was 75. 

Mr. Dillion was the husband of Dorothy (Troyan) Dillon.

The family will receive visitors Monday, Jan. 12, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place Tuesday, Jan. 13, at 10:45 a.m. at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Cremation will be private.

Robert C. Lazuta

Robert C. Lazuta of Mattituck died suddenly Jan. 6, 2014. He was 62.

He was born in Brooklyn Aug. 26, 1952, to Elizabeth (née Prach) and Constantin Lazuta and grew up in Westbury.

A North Fork resident for the past 20 years, he was a retired Long Island Rail Road conductor. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, throwing darts, Disney World, warm weather and all things having to do with trains. His kindness and generosity will be missed by so many.

He is survived by his wife, Carole J. (née Martin); and siblings, Diane Lazuta of Westbury, Richard of West Babylon, James of Brooksville, Fla. and Catherine (Peter) Nettesheim of Huntington.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, Jan. 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck.

Elaine I. Cork of Calverton died Jan. 6 at her home. She was 80. 

Ms. Cork was born Feb. 11, 1934, in Brooklyn to Grace (Lutz) and Edward Kalberer. She worked as a store supervisor for Abraham and Strauss department store in Huntington.

She is survived by her husband, Louis; her daughter, Melinda Young of Riverhead; her son, Stephen of Calverton; her daughter, Kimberly Kennedy of Patchogue; her brother, Everett Kalberer of Setauket; her granddaughter, Krystal Young; and her grandsons, Michael Young and Zachary Kennedy.

The family received visitors Jan. 8 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service took place Jan. 9 at the funeral home, officiated by Deacon Wayne Padula. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Nicolaos Lambrianides

Nicolaos Lambrianides of Mattituck died Jan. 13, 2015. He was 78. 

He was born in Paphos, Cyprus, March 30, 1936, to Elias and Zenovia (Lambros) Lambrianides.

Mr. Lambrianides had been associated with Cathedral Market in New York City before retirement.

He was a communicant and parish council member of Transfiguration of Christ Greek Orthodox Church in Mattituck.

Mr. Lambrianides is survived by his wife, Theofanoulla (née Eleftheriou) Lambrianides; two sons, Gus and Otto of Bayside, Queens; three brothers, Sokratis, Stelios and Ntinos; and three grandchildren.

The family received visitors Jan. 16 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where a Trisagion service was conducted that afternoon. The Divine Liturgy was celebrated Jan. 17 at Transfiguration of Christ Greek Orthodox Church, officiated by the Rev. Protopresbyter Jerasimos Ballas. Interment was at Cutchogue Cemetery.

Virginia Lytle Rumpler

Virginia Lytle Rumpler of Peconic Landing in Greenport died Jan. 14 at The Shores at Peconic Landing. The former Southold resident was 84 years old. 

She was born Aug. 5, 1930, in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. to Henry B. and Mabel P. Lytle and married John E. Rumpler, Jr. June 9, 1951, in Southold.

Virginia received her Bachelor of Science in economics from Russell Sage College and was the director of Human Resources for Stanton Pickering from 1974 to 1998.

From 1960 to 1995, she resided in Greenlawn. She then moved to Southold and became active in the First Presbyterian Church in Southold where she served as a deacon and an elder, and volunteered in the Mission Barn. She was a past president and member of Harborfields School District Board of Education.

Predeceased by her husband John E. Rumpler, Jr. Nov. 20, 2004, she is survived by her son, John “Jack” E. Rumpler III and his wife, Sharon, of Southold; a daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” L. Swiskey and her husband, Jack, of Southold; and four grandchildren, John E. “J.R.” Rumpler IV, Christopher L. Rumpler, Vanessa M. Hansen and Adam E. Swiskey. She was predeceased by a sister, Marilyn L. Chamberlain.

The family received visitors Jan. 18 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. A funeral service was held Jan. 19 at First Presbyterian Church in Southold. Interment took place at the church cemetery.

Estelle “Tootsie” K. Grodski of Riverhead died Jan. 19 at the Riverhead Care Center. She was 84. 

She was born March 29, 1930, in New York City to William and Stella (Harris) Kellis and graduated from Southampton High School in 1948.

Ms. Grodski worked as a legal secretary for Fowler & Kendrick law firm in Riverhead. Family members said she enjoyed reading, Bingo, football and watching NASCAR.

Predeceased by her husband, Vincent, in 1992, she is survived by her son, Richard, of Riverhead; her daughter, Brenda (Chester) Kowalski, also of Riverhead; three grandchildren, Anthony White Jr., Reid Grodski and Christina Grodski; and a great-grandchild, Jordyn DeFriest.

The family will receive visitors today, Thursday, Jan. 22, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 23, at the funeral home. Interment will take place at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church Cemetery in Riverhead.

Spencer G. McNary

Longtime Riverhead resident Spencer G. McNary died Jan. 18. He was 98. 

He was born, Nov. 28, 1916, and married Betty (née Benjamin) in 1947

Mr. McNary served in the U.S. Air Corps with the 509th Atomic Bomb Group. He worked for National Broadcasting Company, from 1935 to 1941 and from 1948 to 1981 as a salesman with I.M. Young Company.

He was a past Grand Knight of Immaculate Conception with Knights of Columbus and a past commander of Riverhead American Legion Post 273.

Predeceased by his wife, Mr. McNary is survived by his daughters, Susan (Wayne) Swiatocha and Kathleen McNary; his grandson, Wayne (Jessica) Swiatocha; and great-grandchildren, Jillian and Reese Swiatocha.

A funeral mass will take place Wednesday, Jan. 21 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Cremation was private.

Arrangements were entrusted to Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Anthony J. Zanieski

Former longtime Cutchogue resident Anthony J. Zanieski of Calverton died Jan. 13 at Stony Brook University Hospital. He was 69.

Mr. Zanieski was born Sept. 6, 1945, in Greenport to Josephine (née Zaweski) and Alexander Zanieski and graduated from Mattituck High School in 1964. He received a culinary arts degree from Alfred State College.

For four years, Mr. Zanieski served as a cook in the U.S. Air Force, achieving the rank of sergeant.

He was a potato farmer for his family’s Cutchogue farm from 1973 to 1982. Most recently he worked as a cook for Mattituck-Cutchogue School District. He was a member of Long Island Rabbit Breeders Association.

Mr. Zanieski is survived by his daughters, Erin May, Anna Cila, and Toni Hoverkamp; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Smith.

A memorial service was held Jan. 18 at Church of the Harvest in Riverhead.

Gloria Larschan of Riverhead died Jan. 15 at the Riverhead Care Center. She was 83. 

She was born Nov. 10, 1931, in Brooklyn; and was a homemaker, who was survived by many friends.

Interment took place Jan. 19 at Riverhead Cemetery.

Virginia L. Sledjeski

Virginia L. Sledjeski of Cutchogue, formerly of Greenport and Riverhead died Jan 21 at her home. She was 94.

She was born Aug. 19, 1920, in Riverhead to Frank and Mary (Leczynski) Pierzchanowski.

Family members said she was homemaker who loved her family and enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren, crocheting, canning jellies and vegetables.

Predeceased by her husband, Leo, in 1977, she is survived by her son, Leo, of Mattituck; her daughters Carol Ann Sendlewski and Gertrude Bokina, both of Cutchogue and Leona White of Riverhead; her sister, Alice Galka; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Jan. 23, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 25, at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. Interment will take place at the church cemetery.

Jerome Forbes

Jerome Forbes of Calverton died Jan. 23 at Riverhead Care Center. He was 80.
He was born Aug. 21, 1934 in the Bronx. Mr. Forbes worked as a salesman for Griswold Candy Company. He was a past president and member of Flanders Mens Club.

Family members said he enjoyed sports and playing mens slow-pitch bowling.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his daugthers, Susan Edwards, Mary Forbes, and Diane Coppola; his stepdaughters, Dianne Gill, Lorine Seewald, Morgain Pauker, Christine Elard and Teresa Kennedy; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Jan. 25 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Cremation was private.

Helene Elizabeth Makowski

Helene Elizabeth Makowski, 86, passed away unexpectedly Jan. 15, 2015. 

She was born April 27, 1928, in Riverhead to Stephanie and Benjamin Grodski, who immigrated to the U.S. from Poland at the turn of the twentieth century. She had six brothers and five sisters. She made her home in Wading River, and Pittstown N.J. before moving to West Melbourne, Fla., in 1993.

Helene was a devoted wife, mother, “Bopchie” and homemaker, known for her delightful wit. She was also an excellent artist, gardener, craftsperson and “master” cook. She enjoyed the challenge of crossword puzzles, the music of Frank Sinatra, swimming in L.I. Sound and “her” New York Mets.

Helene is survived by her husband of 56 years, Walter Makowski, whom she met at Riverhead Lanes; two daughters, Dianne and Adrienne (Jeffrey Wiggin); two grandsons, Michael (Catalina) and David Kowal; one great-granddaughter Camila Josephine; two sisters, Florence Jackson and Dorothy Sousa; and one brother, William Grodski.

Helene will be sorely missed by those whose lives she touched.

A memorial service for Helene was held Jan. 23 at Ammen Family Cremation and Funeral Care, Melbourne, Fla. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Helene’s memory to the American Heart Association, heart.org.
