Phyllis Mackenzie

Phyllis M. Mackenzie of Riverhead died Jan. 24 at Suffolk Center for Rehabilitation in Patchogue. She was 82. 

She was born April 2, 1932, in Southampton to Phillip Curven and Ida (Worm).

Family members said she was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing and talking about the Bible.

Ms. Mackenzie is survived by her son, Bruce; her daughter, Robin Dawn Gordon; her brothers Edward and Theodore Curven; her sister, Patricia May; two grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother Wayne in 1988.

A memorial service will be held at noon, Saturday, Jan. 31, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Aquebogue. Cremation was private.

Arrangements were handled by Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead.


Stanley V. Mach

Former Shelter Island resident Stanley V. Mach of Aquebogue died Jan. 24. He was 93 years old. 

Graveside services will be held on Friday, Feb. 6, at 10:30 A.M. at Our Lady of the Isle R.C. Cemetery on Shelter Island.  Father Peter DeSanctis will officiate and the U.S. Army Honor Guard will render military honors.

Memorial donations to the Disabled American Veterans organization would be appreciated.

Barbara O. Cameron

Barbara O. Cameron of Greenport died at her home Jan. 30. She was 80.

She was born in Brooklyn Aug. 21, 1934, to Adelaide (Benedetti) and Armando Berchiolli. Raised in Northport she attended schools there and graduated valedictorian from Northport High School.

Formerly of Huntington Station, she moved to Greenport 30 years ago.

Family members said she was an avid reader of books, who also enjoyed gardening, thrift shops, eating jelly beans and going out to eat, especially breakfast. She also enjoyed looking after her neighbors in the Driftwood Cove and Greenport communities. Family members also said she was very proud of her children and grandchildren.

Predeceased by her husband Robert L. Cameron on March 12, 2010, she leaves her daughters Janet Frost of Clifton, Va., Joan Torkelsen of Southold, Donna Topczynski of Clifton, Va. and Glenn Cameron of Mt. Sinai; a brother Kent Berchiolli of California; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 3, at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport, where the Rev. Richard Hoerning will officiate. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were handled by DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.

Vickey T. Schwarz

Vickey T. Schwarz of Riverhead died Feb. 1 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. She was 93.

She was born Jan. 7, 1922, in New Jersey and worked for Riverhead Central School District as a bus driver.

Predeceased by her husband, Richard, Oct. 13, 1990, and a grandson, Ms. Schwarz is survived by her son, Anthony; four grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Feb. 5, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead, Father Lawrence Duncklee officiating. Interment will follow at 10:45 a.m. at Calverton National Cemetery.

Helen B. Dawson

Helen B. Dawson, 94, a resident of Frederick Living in Frederick, Pa. since 2000, passed away peacefully from pneumonia Feb. 2, 2015, in hosppice at Phoenixville Hospital in Pennsylvania, with her family by her side. 

Helen was born in Fairmont, W. Va., Jan. 28, 1921, to Frederick H. Barron and Florence E. Bassett. During her first 12 years, Helen lived in Scotia, N.Y., and Schenectady, N.Y. In 1932, the family moved to Greenwich, N.Y., and in 1938, Helen graduated from Greenwich High School as class valedictorian.

She attended the New York State College for Teachers in Albany, from 1938 to 1942, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree as a teacher of business subjects. She earned her master’s degree in 1949.

Helen taught business subjects at Shelter Island High School from 1942 to 1949. In 1949, she married C. Austin Dawson, who had been one of her students there. Later that year, they moved to Granville, N.Y., where Austin taught business subjects and later became a school guidance counselor. Their three children were all born in Granville and attended school there until 1967.

In 1967, the family moved back to Long Island, where Austin became director of guidance for the Southold School District and Helen returned to Shelter Island to again teach business subjects.

While they lived on Long Island, Helen was the pianist/organist for North Fork Baptist Church in Mattituck and treasurer, coordinator and teacher for the Pioneer Girls at the church.

Helen and Austin were both members of Gideons International, an association of Christian professional men and their wives, and held numerous offices on the local and state levels. Both led ministries for inmates at Suffolk County Jail in Riverhead. Helen truly loved both her church work and her involvement with Gideons.

In 2000, after Helen and Austin had retired, they moved to the Frederick Mennonite Community in Frederick, Pa. Afflicted with Parkinson’s disease, Austin passed away there Aug. 16, 2004. Helen continued to live independently at Frederick until circulatory problems in her legs and feet forced her to move into a personal-care unit at Frederick in August 2014 and then to the nursing unit there in December 2014.

Helen is survived by two sons, Barron Austin Dawson, 61, and his wife, Bonita, of West Deptford, N.J., and Kenneth Eugene Dawson, 59, of Bethlehem, Pa., as well as a daughter, Mary Ellen Komarek, 57, and her husband, Robert, of Fishkill, N.Y. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Allyson and Brendan Komarek, Glenn R. Dawson and Katherine H. Dawson.

Arrangements entrusted to DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes, Inc. are unknown at this time.

Betty Marie Hermann

Betty Marie Hermann, a 36-year resident of Southold, died at her home February 3, 2015. She was 83.

Born Sept. 21, 1931, in Baldwin to Ivy (née Robins) and Walter Johnson, she was a graduate of Baldwin High School’s class of 1949.

On Oct. 26, 1957, she married Frank T. Hermann in Baldwin and they later made their home in Southold. He passed away July 22, 2008.

Surviving are her children, Judy and Nancy (Robert) Leonard, both of Jamesport; her siblings; Helen and Barbara Johnson of Baldwin, Janet Wider of Hempstead and Evelyn Zeliff of North Carolina and two grandsons: Michael and Joseph Leonard. She was predeceased by her siblings, William, Ronald, Vernon and Robert Johnson and Shirley Wallace.

The family received visitors Feb. 8 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold where services were conducted by Pastor Mike Jankowski. Interment took place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Christine E. Christie

Christine E. “Teena” Christie, a resident of Founders Village in Southold, passed away peacefully at her home Feb. 6, 2015.

Born to Robert Lee and Alice (Hinson) Edwards July 6, 1927, in Greensboro, N.C., she was the youngest of three girls. Growing up on a farm during the Depression, Teena learned many of her life skills at that time. Her handwork of knitting, sewing and needlepoint were widely used throughout her life to create garments and gifts for her family and friends.

Teena attended Shenandoah College in Winchester, Va., where she met her future husband, John Christie. Together they transferred to Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, where Teena graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology.

Moving to New York City in 1949, Teena worked at New York University until marrying John on April 21, 1951. Together they spent two years in Pensacola, Fla., during John’s naval service. They returned to live in Pelham in 1953, where they raised their family while spending weekends and vacations at their summer home near Cedar Beach in Southold. In 1971 they moved permanently to Southold.

Teena owned Southold Vacuum Center on Main Road in Peconic from 1973 through 1988, where her husband helped with repairs. She provided administrative support in John’s business, SCP Bookkeeping Service, which John established in 1971 and owned until his death in 2006.

Teena was a passionate and excellent duplicate bridge player. She was a familiar participant at weekly bridge clubs. Her love of owls, Scrabble, crossword puzzles and Yahtzee games with the grandchildren will be fondly remembered.

Teena is survived by her children, Stanford Christie of Kirkland, Wash., Charles Christie of Asunción, Paraguay, Pamela Kart of Ridgefield, Conn., and Scott Christie of Mattituck; and her sister Betty Gale Sikes of Greensboro, N.C. She also leaves her beloved six grandchildren, one great-grandson, several nieces and nephews and many dear friends near and far. She was predeceased by her sister Katherine “Kaye” Carter of Boise, Idaho.

Burial will be private. No service is planned at this time.

Memorial donations can be made to Wounded Warrior Project, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Habitat for Humanity.

Joseph A. Mocniak

Joseph A. Mocniak of Calverton died Feb. 9 at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset after a long illness. He was 77. 

He was born March 3, 1937, in Greensboro, Pa. to Blanche (Torarsky) and August Mocniak.

Mr. Mocniak served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962. He was a vice president of Citibank in New York City.

Locally, Mr. Mocniak served in the Knights of Columbus in the 4th degree, the Patriotic Degree of the Order. He was also an usher for St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead.

Family members said he enjoyed reading.

He is survived by his wife, Ursula (née Karutz) of Calverton; his sons, Joseph Jr., of Massapequa and Christian of Holbrook; his daughter, Uta Field of South Setauket; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Feb. 12, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 13, at St. Isidore R.C. Church. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Marie T. Grassi

Marie T. Grassi of Riverhead died Feb. 7 at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport. She was 73.

She was born Aug. 8, 1941, in Brooklyn to Angelina (Denaro) and Giacomo Virgadaula.

Ms. Grassi worked as a clerk for Form Plasitcs in Carle Place. She was a member of the Carle Place American Legion Auxiliary and the Italian-American Club of Peconic.

Ms. Grassi is survived by her husband, Vincent of Riverhead; her children, Vincent, of Elkins Park, Pa., Craig, of Huntington, and Angela, of Colonie, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, Feb. 11, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will be held at 9:45 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 12, at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Patrick W. Lohn

Patrick W. Lohn of Southold died on Feb. 2, 2015 at the age of 67.

Born Jan. 21, 1948, in Providence, R.I. to Jean (née Scrimenti) and William J. Lohn, he was raised in Westfield, N.J.

He completed his education at George Washington University and was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity.

A longtime resident of Southold, he previously lived in various parts of the United States and has run several successful businesses, most recently as chief executive officer of Front Row Video in Southold.

Pat had also been a disc jockey and a voice in the popular children’s cartoon “Star Blazers.”

Surviving are his companion and longtime friend June Josephson of Orient; his children: Carol (née Lohn) Campos of Oxford, Mass., Wendy (née Lohn) McNulty of Statham, N.H., William Lohn of Mechanicsville, Va. and Benjamin Lohn of College Station, Texas; his sister: Sara (Jon) Hawkins of Southold; two grandchildren, Chloe Campos and Delancy McNulty; a nephew, Michael Hawkins and a niece, Jessica Hawkins.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Charkow died Dec. 14, 2014 at the age of 87.

William W. Wilson

William W. Wilson of Riverhead died Feb. 10 in Georgia. He was 76. 

Mr. Wilson was born April 3, 1938, in North Carolina to William and Ethel Wilson. He married Emma (Williams) in 1961 in North Carolina.

He worked as a cook at the Riverhead Town Senior Center. Family members said he enjoyed fishing and racing.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Wilson is survived by his children, Dorothy McCoy of Baltimore, Debra Kozerski of Florida, William, of Georgia, and Doris Strange and Doreen Wilson-Williams, both of Riverhead; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The family received visitors Feb. 15 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service was held Feb. 16 at Unity Baptist Church in Mattituck. Interment took place at Riverhead Cemetery.

Hallock Elliot Tuthill

Hallock Elliot Tuthill of Cutchogue died Feb. 9, 2015. He was 98.

He was born in Port Leyden, N.Y., July 12, 1916 to Lelia (née Hallock) and Ernest Case Tuthill and later married the former Clara Louise Cooper.

Hallock had been a farmer and caretaker and property manager of area homes. He was also a craftsman who enjoyed caning and wickering.

In the community, he was a member, deacon and trustee of Cutchogue Presbyterian Church, a member of Cutchogue-New Suffolk Historical Council and a board member of Cutchogue Cemetery Association. He and his wife “Cotty” were also volunteers with many local civic organizations.

A loyal New York Mets fan, he will be remembered as a true patriot.

Surviving are his wife, “Cotty” Tuthill and a nephew, John Tuthill. He was predeceased by his son, Cadet William E. Tuthill in 1972 and brothers, John Case Tuthill in 2014 and Ernest Quinton Tuthill in 2005.

The family received visitors Feb. 12 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. A funeral service was held Feb. 13, at the funeral home, officiated by Pastor Richie King of Cutchogue Presbyterian Church. Interment took place at Cutchogue Cemetery.

Bert J. Roner of Riverhead died Feb. 14 at his home. He was 37. 

He was born Jan. 23, 1978, in Amityville to Barbara (Schroder) and Hubert J. Roner. Family members said he enjoyed fishing.

Mr. Roner is survived by his mother, of Riverhead; his siblings, Barbara Drexel of Aquebogue, Nancy Doherty of Cutchogue, and Andrew, of Riverhead.

Winnie F. Ayers-Brown

Former Riverhead resident Winnie F. Ayers-Brown of Bellport died Feb. 10 at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. She was 67.

Ms. Ayers-Brown was born May 24, 1947, in Dillwyn, Va., to Nannie (Woodson) and Robert Ayers. She worked as a certified nursing assistant at Southampton Care Center.

Her mother said Ms. Ayers-Brown was a kind-hearted person who loved helping people.

Predeceased by her husband, Harold Brown, in 2010 and her father, Ms. Ayers-Brown is survived by her mother, of Riverhead; her daughters, Angela Booker of Bellport, Dakota Ayers of Riverhead and Thermia Booker of Mastic; her son, Jamie Ayers of Riverhead; her brother, Robert Ayers of Riverhead; her sisters, Nancy Rose, Barbara and Anna Ayers, all of Riverhead, and Shirley Ayers of Coram; 19 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Feb. 20, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church in Riverhead, where a funeral service will immediately follow, the Rev. Charles McElroy officiating. Interment will take place at 12:45 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, at Calverton National Cemetery.

Tanya and Danielle Lawrence

Tanya Jeneke Lawrence and Danielle Gabrielle Lawrence of Wading River died at their home Feb. 15.

Tanya was born March 21, 1971, and worked as a case worker for East End Disability Associates in Riverhead, assisting many families and individuals with obtaining services. She was 43. 

Danielle was born Feb. 3, 1998, and was in 10th grade at Riverhead High School, where she was involved with orchestra, Riverhead Community Awareness Program and Riverhead Blue Masques. Like her mother, she also wanted to help people with disabilities, and was interested in volunteering to assist with the EEDA Creative Arts Program annual show. She was 17.

Both are survived by Tony and Brandy Lawrence of Riverhead and Wading River.

The family will receive visitors Saturday, Feb. 21, from 9 to 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Riverhead, where a funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at Washington Memorial Park in Coram.

Funeral arrangements are in care of Alexander-Tuthill Funeral Home in  Wading River.

Eugene W. Kaczynski

Eugene W. Kaczynski of Calverton died Feb. 20 at Riverhead Care Center. He was 78.

He was born June 3, 1936, in Maspeth, Queens to Walter and Anna Kaczynski. He married Sandra (Benjamin) Aug. 8, 1958, in Woodside, Queens.

From 1954 to 1958, Mr. Kaczynski served in the U.S. Navy. He worked as a supervisor for Con Edison for over 30 years.

Mr. Kaczynski was active in the Loyal Order of Moose in Riverhead and was a past acting administrator, past governor, and past secretary of Moose International. He also made hats and scarves for underprivileged and premature babies.

Family members said he enjoyed cooking, painting on glass and hunting and especially loved watching television and channel surfing.

Mr. Kaczynski is survived by his wife, Sandra; his daughter, Karyn Duarte of Wading River; his sons, Eugene Jr. of Center Moriches and Robert of Islip Terrace; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Monday, Feb. 23, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 10 a.m. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Clifford Coleman

Baiting Hollow resident Clifford Coleman, a former longtime resident of East Quogue died Feb. 20 at his home. He was 67.

Mr. Coleman was a director of weights and measures for Suffolk County Department of Consumer Affairs and retired after 42 years of service. He was past vice president of Suffolk County Association of Municipal Employees, Inc.

He was a former member of Quogue Gun Club, a former member of Antique Automobile Club of America, past president of Woodcrest Homeowners Association and a member of National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors.

Mr. Coleman is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marjorie; his daughters, Debra Rupprecht and Melissa Mohan of Westfield, N.J.; and four grandchildren.

The family will host a celebration of life at a time and place to be announced. Cremation will be private.

Melissa Denna Brown

Melissa Denna Brown of Riverhead died Feb. 12 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. She was 34.

She was born Jan. 13, 1981, on Long Island to Vanessa Brown and Charles Dalton.

Predeceased by her parents, and her sister Pearl, Ms. Brown is survived by her sisters Keisha Dalton of Middle Island and Joann Booker of Ridge; her brother, James Davender, also of Ridge; and many other family members.

Services took place Feb. 20 at Galilee Church of God in Christ in Riverhead, officiated by Pastor Dr. Roy Pennon Sr. Interment took place at Riverhead Cemetery.

Arrangements were in the care of Seay Memorial Chapel in Riverhead.

Harry Jones

Former Southampton resident Harry Jones of Riverhead died Jan. 25. He was 81.

Mr. Jones was born May 15, 1933, in Southampton to Archenetta Arrington Jones. He attended schools in Southampton, where he was on the football team. While in high school he worked at Shinnecock Golf Course.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1956. In 2013, he received a certificate for his U.S. military service.

After returning from the Army, Mr. Jones worked for Southampton Tire for 25 years. He was a member of Riverhead Masonic Lodge 91. Family members said he enjoyed living at John Wesley Village in Riverhead and later moved to Riverhead Care Center, where he was president of the Resident Care Council.

Family members said Mr. Jones made many friends during his lifetime, on his high school football team, at the golf course and at the care center. He enjoyed playing bingo and played the lottery daily, continuing to play at the care center, where his cousin would drop off tickets.

He is survived by his wife, Mary (née Davis); his son, Regan; his daughter, Brenda; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many other relatives. Arrangements were in the care of Seay Memorial Chapel in Riverhead.
