Daysman Arnold Morris

Daysman Arnold Morris of Southold died Dec. 16, 2013, at 10:30 p.m. He passed away peacefully of natural causes at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, at the age of 89.

Daysman was born in Southold March 22, 1924, the son of G. Thomas Morris and Anna Falcon Morris and the fourth of seven children.

Daysman attended Southold High School until his sophomore year and joined the Navy, serving his country from 1943 to 1946. His tour of duty took him many places such as Bainbridge, Md., Norfolk, Va., Honolulu, Bermuda, Gibraltar, the Panama Canal, the Philippine Islands and the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, Japan. Some years later, after marrying and having children, he decided to obtain his GED, of which he was very proud.

Daysman had the distinction of being the son of one of the founders of Shiloh Baptist Church. He was baptized by the Rev. William Turner at age 11. He became a member of the Junior Usher Board and continued until approximately five years ago. He was president of the Senior Ushers for a number of years, served as church treasurer for over 35 years and was a Trustee until his demise.

On Aug. 14, 1949, he was united in Holy Matrimony by the Rev. Leroy Wertz with Nannie Morris (not related), daughter of James and Pearl Morris. They are blessed with three wonderful children: Douglas Arnold, Lori Morris Latney and Sandra Denise.

In 1953, Daysman and his brother Clarence became partners in the Morris Cesspool Service Inc. In 1955 he became sole owner of the business, which he ran successfully for nearly 40 years. He retired in 1990 and the business was taken over by his son, Douglas, under the same name. Daysman remained as a consultant for a several years.

Daysman led a very busy life being involved in various civic, fraternal and religious organizations, such as the NAACP (treasurer) and the Eastern Baptist Churches Union (treasurer). In 1959, he became a member of Tyre Lodge No. 91 of the Free and Accepted Masons. He became Worshipful Master in 1966-67 and was a member of many Houses of Masonry. He also was a Patron of Tyre Chapter 62 Order of the Eastern Star. He belonged to the Southold Rotary Club, serving as its president in 1986-87. He was a recipient of the Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellow award and was a life member of Burton Potter Post 185 of the American Legion in Greenport, N.Y.

Daysman was predeceased by his twin brother, Vincent; brothers Levi and Clarence; his sister, Alice Tucker; and a special friend, Charlie Bumble. He is survived by his sisters Eleanor Lingo (O.D.) of Southold and Virginia Draper of Edison, N.J.

Also mourning his loss are his faithful and loving wife, Nan; three children, Douglas, Lori Morris Latney and Sandra Denise; three grandchildren, Christopher Latney of Greenport, Heather Latney Kelly (Marc) of Randallstown, Md., and Hraklis Morris of Greenport; four great-grandchildren, Preston Latney, Marc Kelly, Justin Kelly and Jordan Morris; two great-great-grandchildren, Takyea Solomon and Tyreik Solomon; a godson, Zenos Morris of Brooklyn; two grand-godchildren, twins Christopher and Christina Parker; two sisters-in-law, Mary B. Morris of Blythewood, S.C., and Evelyn Morris of Ocala, Fla.; and many cousins and friends.

The family received friends Dec. 19 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Homegoing services were celebrated Dec. 20 by the Rev. Tommy Edmond at Shiloh Baptist Church. Interment with U.S. Navy honors was at Calverton National Cemetery.

Louis A. Williamson

Louis A. Williamson of Greenport died Dec. 28, 2013. He was 62.

He was born Sept. 4, 1951, in Key West, Fla., to Cullen West and Mary Ellene (Hall) Williamson. A 1970 graduate of Marathon High School in Florida, he excelled in athletics, was MVP for three years and held the distinction of the most consecutive free throws in a basketball game.

He married Rita Gebhardt in 1980 and together they made their home in Greenport. Louis had been a commercial fisherman.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, L. Adam (Catie) Williamson of Massachusetts, Karen Sue (Matt) Wolfersdorf of Kansas and Grace Ann Williamson, United States Air Force; his stepmother, Mattie Pearl Williamson of North Carolina; a brother, William E. Williamson of Georgia; a sister, Cullene W. Schneider of Louisiana; a granddaughter, Madison Jane Williamson; three nieces; and two nephews.

Mr. Williamson was cremated Dec. 31. Funeral arrangements were handled by DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.

Linda C. Gray

Linda C. Gray of Riverhead died at her home Dec. 28, 2013. She was 64.

She was born in Greenport June 28, 1949, to Louis Hobson and Marcella Lynch and had most recently worked as a clerk for New York Telephone Company in Patchogue.

Ms. Gray is survived by her son, Justin, of Manorville; her mother, Marcella Cooke of Riverhead; and her brother, Lester Cooke of Central Islip.

The family will receive visitors Monday, Dec. 30, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead, where a funeral service will take place Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m. Interment will be at New Bethany Cemetery in Mattituck, with a graveside service officiated by Pastor Don Loper of East End Full Gospel Church.

Theodore Trinowski

Former Aquebogue resident Theodore Trinowski of Riverhead died Dec. 23, 2013, at Southampton Hospital. He was 97.

Born in Riverhead July 6, 1916, Mr. Trinowski served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. He was most recently employed as a mechanic at East End Service Station in Jamesport. Family members said he enjoyed fishing and restoring cars.

Mr. Trinowski was predeceased by his wife, Bertha, in 2012 and his son, Theodore Jr., in 1965. He is survived by his daughters, Maryann Simchick of Riverhead and Frances Krietsek of Florida; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements for private cremation were handled by McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery.

Frank F. Zaweski

Frank F. Zaweski of Jamesport died Dec. 15, 2013. He was 72.

The family received visitors Dec. 18 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service took place Dec. 19 at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment followed at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Cemetery.

Winifred A. McKavish

Winifred A. McKavish of Riverhead died Dec. 25 at Riverhead Care Center. She was 84.

She was born Aug. 27, 1929, in Riverhead to Anton and Catherine McKavish. After graduating from Seton Hall High School in Patchogue in 1947, Ms. McKavish joined the Sisters of Charity of Halifax. She was later employed as a teller at Chase Manhattan Bank and then worked for many years as a personal secretary to restaurant and hotel founder Howard Johnson and his family.

Family members said she enjoyed reading, shopping, dining and attending Broadway shows.

Predeceased by her brother, John, Ms. McKavish is survived by many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 30 at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead, followed by interment at the church cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Delma L. Burton

Delma L. Burton of Mattituck died Dec. 31, 2013, at Peconic Bay Medical Center. She was 91 years old.

Mrs. Burton was born March 30, 1922, in Borgo Val di Taro, Italy, to Giuseppe and Marcella (Pellegrinelli) Fusina.

She had a wonderful life and loved Mattituck, her son recalled.

Predeceased by her husband, Joseph C. Burton, in 2008, she is survived by her two children, Dr. Joan Burton of Knoxville, Tenn., and Joseph C. (Cindy) Burton of Glenwood Landing, N.Y., and three grandchildren, Sarah, Patrick and Laura.

Graveside services took place Jan. 3 at Calverton National Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck.

Rose E. Sahm of Southold died Dec. 23, 2013. She was 89.

She was born Sept. 5, 1924, in Glen Cove to John and Maria (Somogyi) Stier.

From 1947 to 1977, before moving to the North Fork, she resided in Great Neck. She enjoyed gardening and assisting her son at Willow Hill Antiques in Southold.

Predeceased by her husband, Clifford, in 1982, Ms. Sahm is survived by her children, John and Richard, both of Southold, and Patricia, of Great Neck; and a brother, John Stier of Ronkonkoma.

Lois Lorraine Harrison of Mattituck died Christmas Day 2013. She was 83.

She was born July 10, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Erwin and Lorraine (Volgelpohl) Putzier. After graduating from Conrad High School in Wilmington, Del., she married William Elton Harrison Jr.

A Mattituck resident since 1962, she was a member of Mattituck Presbyterian Church, Eastern Star, the Peconic Bay Power Squadron, Peconic Bay Region AACA and Hudson Club. She had also been a 4-H, Brownie and Girl Scout leader.

Predeceased by her husband, William Elton Harrison Jr., in 2003, she is survived by her children, William (Julie) Harrison III of Tipp City, Ohio, Linda (Mike) Conger of Sandy, Utah, and Nancy (Jim) Milowski of Mattituck; a sister, Elaine Pepper of Wilmington, Del.; and five grandchildren, Emily, Stephen and Ryan Conger and Melissa and Andrew Milowski.

The family received friends Dec. 30 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where funeral services were conducted Dec. 31 by the Rev. Patrick Smith of Mattituck Presbyterian Church. Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery.

Linda Jean Nassivera-Weir

Linda Jean Nassivera-Weir of Peconic died Dec. 28, 2013. She was 70.

She was born at Glens Falls (N.Y.) Hospital March 5, 1943, to James and Geneva Nassivera and married Gerald Weir at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Long Island City on Nov. 28, 1964.

A former resident of Baldwin and Long Beach, she received her nursing degree from Lenox Hill Hospital and had been a pediatric hospice nurse there and at St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital.

Ms. Nassivera-Weir is survived by her husband, Gerald Weir; two children, Dorie Henning of Rockport, Maine, and Laura Bolliver of Southold; three grandchildren, Joshua (11) and Kaylin (17) Henning and Abigail Bolliver (15); and two sons-in-law, Kristopher Henning and John Bolliver. She was predeceased by a son, Gerald C. Weir, in 2008.

Friends were received Dec. 30 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 31 by Father Thomas P. Murray at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. Interment was at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Arthur W. Hahn III of Greenport died Jan. 2, 2014. He was 87.

He was born May 1, 1926, in the Bronx, N.Y., the son of Anna (Morgan) and Arthur W. Hahn Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Gertrude (Trudy) Hahn; his children, Russell W. Hahn and Arthur W. Hahn IV; twin grandsons, George C. and Henry J. Hahn; and his daughter-in-law, Diana Hahn. He was predeceased by his first wife, Joyce, on Dec. 20, 2005.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Jan. 7, from noon to 12:30 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Graveside services and interment will follow at the Presbyterian church cemetery in Southold. Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Army.

Henry Rutkoski of Mattituck died Dec. 22, 2013, in West Palm Beach, Fla. He was 87.

He was born July 14, 1926, to John and Laura (Wagner) Rutkoski. He graduated from Mattituck High School in 1944 and married Helen Penski in Hudson Heights, N.J., on Oct. 17, 1953.

A lifelong farmer and North Fork resident, Henry ran the Hooterville Farm Stand for 45 years.

In the community, he was a communicant of Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Polish American Club in Riverhead and Mattituck Fire Department, where he served as a chief and commissioner.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; his children, Patricia Deerkoski of Florida, Thomas Rutkoski of Colorado, Robert (Marilyn) Rutkoski of Mattituck and David (Mary) Rutkoski of Delaware; seven grandchildren, Brian Slaga, Greg Deerkoski, Michael Rutkoski, Jennifer Rutkoski, Jessica Rutkoski, Christopher Rutkoski and Noah Rutkoski; and a great-grandson, Robert Slaga. He was predeceased by a son, John Rutkoski, in 2003 and by nine siblings: Stanley Rutkoski, Jean Hauck, Bertha Bokina, Helen Simchick, Ann Dixon, John Rutkoski Jr., Josephine Gevinski, Mary Kaider and Edward Rutkoski.

Eugene F. Chituk

Lifelong Cutchogue resident Eugene F. Chituk passed away from cancer Dec. 24, 2013, at Eastern Long Island Hospital. He was 77.

Gene was born Feb. 24, 1936, to Antone and Josephine Chituk and married his sweetheart, Dotty Ficner, Sept. 24, 1961. They recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary.
Gene was predeceased by his two brothers, Jon R. Chituk and Antone Chituk, and is survived by his wife, Dotty; his three children, Donna McGahan, Eugene Chituk and Diane Harned; his sister, Joan Domaleski; and two grandchildren, Ryan Harned and Brendan Chituk.

Gene was a graduate of Mattituck High School, a former member of the Cutchogue Fire Department and a communicant and collector at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church. He was a farmer and a master carpenter and later in life worked with his son’s company, Chituk Pools, Ltd., as a pool technician for over 20 years.

Gene loved spending time with his family and his dogs and was an avid NASCAR race fan. He was a collector of classic cars and a “Mr. Fix-it” who could repair anything. A kind, loving, easy-going North Forker his entire life, he enjoyed fishing, beaching and boating on Peconic Bay. Family members said, “We’ll always remember Gene as the husband, father and grandfather who relished life’s simplicity, whether it was mowing the lawn or walking his dogs. Always smiling and offering a positive word, Gene will be sorely missed.”

Frank F. Zaweski

Frank F. Zaweski of Jamesport died Dec. 15, 2013, at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 72.

He was born in Greenport June 18, 1941, to Stanley and Bertha (Glover) Zaweski and lived his entire life on the family’s “homestead land” in Jamesport.

Until a disability forced him to retire, Mr. Zaweski farmed with his brothers, Stanley (“Whiskers”), of Laurel, and Albie, of St. Petersburg, Fla., who survive him. Mr. Zaweski enjoyed going to Foxwoods, fishing, hunting, visiting friends, attending family gatherings and going to yard sales. He also served as principal caretaker for his mother during the last few years of her life. His brothers said they, along with his friends, will “miss him terribly.”

The family received visitors Dec. 18 at McLaughlin-Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service took place Dec. 19 at St. Isidore R.C. Church, followed by interment at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church cemetery, both in Riverhead.

Katherine F. Crane

Katherine F. Crane of Riverhead died Jan. 5, 2014. She was 91.

Born in Riverhead Sept. 14, 1922, to Horace and Ruth (Hardy) Wells, she had been employed by W.T. Grant as a retail worker. After her retirement, friends said, she spent her time as a caretaker, always willing to help others.

Ms. Crane is survived by her friend Richard Miller and numerous other friends who helped take care of her.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 11, at 10 a.m. at Riverhead Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Enrique Lebron of Riverhead United Methodist Church. Cremation will be private.

Arrangements are being handled by Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead.


Ernie Kempermann

Former Calverton resident Ernie Kempermann of Maricopa, Ariz., died Jan. 5, 2014, at Chandler (Ariz.) Regional Medical Center. He was 76.

He was born in East Meadow Feb. 2, 1937, to Ruth (Borman) and Ernest Kempermann Sr. He served in the U.S. Army and was a jet mechanic for Grumman Aircraft in Calverton for 17 years.

A former owner of the Carving Board restaurant in Calverton, Mr. Kempermann also owned and operated the Village Crossroads restaurant there for 30 years, which his wife, Carole, said he built “mostly by himself.” She recalled his love for building, describing how he rebuilt a beach house and loved restoring old cars. Ms. Kempermann also said they were happily married for 48 years and described her husband as someone who “loved to travel and have fun.”

In addition to his wife, Mr. Kempermann is survived by three daughters, Donna Pierro of Riverhead, Debbie McColum of Somers, Conn., and Colleen O’Brien of Calverton; three sons, Ernest III, of Southampton, Shaun Brady of San Mateo, Calif., and Carl, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Lynn Parish of Huntington; and nine grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Jan. 10, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace R.C. Church in Maricopa, where a funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Marcos Velasquez.

Funeral arrangements were handled by J. Warren Funeral Services, Cole & Maud Gardens Chapel in Casa Grande, Ariz.

A memorial service will be held on Long Island, Tuesday, Feb. 11, at St. Sylvester’s R.C. Church in Medford, Father Tom Colby officiating. The time is to be determined.

Delma L. Burton of Mattituck died Dec. 31, 2013, at Peconic Bay Medical Center. She was 91 years old.

Anne D. Leverich

Anne D. Leverich of Southold died at her home Jan. 9, 2014. She was 81.

Born in New York City March 9, 1932, to James and Helen Dartt, she attended Abbot Academy and Wellesley College.

On Sept. 12, 1953, she married William R. Leverich in Cold Spring Harbor. They lived for the past 20 years in Southold, where they owned and operated Brick Cove Marina.

Anne was active as a member and church treasurer of First Presbyterian Church of Southold and in Sewing Plus.

Left to mourn her passing are her husband, William R. Leverich; three children and their spouses, Don Leverich (Laurie) of Port Jefferson, Diane Vail (Bill) of Riverhead and Sandra DeLong (Todd) of Cutchogue; and seven grandchildren, Kelsey Leverich, Janine Leverich, Amanda DeLong, Nicholas DeLong, Scott DeLong, Mieko Vail and Forrest Vail.

Services will be held Saturday, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Southold, the Rev. Dr. Peter J. Kelley officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org), East End Hospice (eeh.org) or First Presbyterian Church of Southold (fpcsouthold.org) would be appreciated.

James G. Minogue

James G. (Jerry) Minogue of Mattituck died Jan. 6, 2014, at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 81. He had been a second generation photoengraver with the New York Daily News.

Born April 11, 1932, in Brooklyn to James Leo and Adelaide (Reiss) Minogue, he served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 and was honorably discharged as a sergeant.

In 1965, he moved with his family to Bellerose Terrace, where he resided for 35 years. He had been a commander of the Bayside Power Squadron and a member of Freeport Yacht Club.

After moving to the North Fork in 1999, he became a member of the Peconic Bay Power Squadron and the Mattituck Gun Club and was active with North Fork Community Theatre and the Mattituck-Laurel Historical Society and Museums, where he once served as president.

Mr. Minogue was predeceased July 20, 2011, by his wife, Diana F. (née Marchese), whom he married in 1959. Left behind are three sons, Dennis, Richard and Evan; their wives, Joyce, Gina, and Beth; and his devoted granddaughters Sierra, Alexis, Gianna, Olivia, Mia and Julia.

Calling hours took place Jan. 9 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where funeral services were held Jan. 10, Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt officiating. Interment with U.S. Army honors was at Calverton National Cemetery.

Memorials to North Fork Community Theatre or the Mattituck-Laurel Historical Society and Museums Inc. would be appreciated.

Kathleen T. Lazarus

Kathleen T. Lazarus of Jamesport died Jan. 12 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She was 57.

Ms. Lazarus was born Dec. 5, 1956, in New York City to Raymond and Therese Keating and had worked as a registered nurse with the Dominican Sisters. She married Joel Lazarus Aug. 15, 1982, in Port Jefferson.

Family members said she loved animals and enjoyed bird-watching, photography and stained glass.

Predeceased by her father, Ms. Lazarus is survived by her husband, of Jamesport; her sons, Jonathan, of South Carolina, Jesse, of West Sayville, and Sean, of Greenvale, N.Y.; her mother; her brother, Raymond Keating; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, Jan. 15 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue, where a funeral service will take place during the evening hours. Cremation will be private.
